Omniscient?

I know that there are some people that do not believe in life after death. I think that they believe that once you die there is nothing, which would make sense - if there is not life after death, then there is nothing. Some people believe in Heaven and Hell. Other people believe in reincarnation. I think that I have heard others say that there is not really Heaven and Hell but rather spirits that are among us. I hope that I have not left anyone out, but I am pretty sure that I have, because there are so many different beliefs. Now, what I really want to know here is for those of you that think that there is something after death, what do you think that people know after they die? When you die, do you have any knowledge of your life on Earth or your loved ones? Do you have memories and know everything only from your life? Do you all of a sudden know everything that your loved ones did, said and felt during their lives? Are you omniscient and know the answers to all the mysteries of the universe? What kind of awareness, if any, do you think that people have after they die?

Hi purple, this is a very interesting discussion as I am sure that every participant will have something interesting to tell. To talk about what i feel, is something like I believe that our body is like a clothe. After a due course of time the cloth gets old and is worn out and finally we no longer fit-into it and have to discard it. Once the body is discarded there is an "Evaluation" of our deeds, our thoughts for eg. did we feel jealous of anything? Did we choose the right path while we are at the cross roads to choose between the Right and the Wrong? How virtous was our spent life? Depending on our deeds or better known as Karma we will be awarded a new life in a new body, like a new cloth. Now this new cloth could be very comfortable made of Satin or could be very disgusting like rags and tatters, all depending upon the Evaluation and the verdict passed by Him! The subject and my feelings toward it could prolong for endless words hence I must put a small period here. Have a great Day!

I really like the way that you described this, Bodhisatya, and from you description it sounds like you believe in reincarnation, right? It sounds like during the "evaluation" part of the journey, we would know and feel all that we have done and felt in our mortal lives. When we are reincarnated, though, would we remember these things? I have heard and read a little about "past life regression", which suggests that on some level we are conscious of our actions in previous lives. Do you agree with this belief?

Hmmmm.. an Interesting question again dear friend. Let me say, it shall depend to a great extent on the person him/herself. It is something like how open are you towards accepting the facts and how well can you swallow your pride when the evaluation part is happening. Maybe I am not clear so I shall cite a small example but I admit I really don't know how apt it is at the given context. it could be something like this, Suppose there is this person who by his actions and deeds have made others suffer. He was the cause of grief to many. He rose to power and supremacy by his ruthlessness. But slowly during the passage of time the wheels of fortune churned. And everything that he treasured was lost. He started losing even the last straw that he believed that belonged to him. At this juncture he starts a self- assessment. What went Wrong? The answer is right in front of him, whether he realizes it and amends his way or not will depend a lot on himself. Another interesting belief I would love to mention here, that all the bad doings would be punished in this very life and possibly would prolong to the next lives that you would possibly gain. But it takes a lot of effort to fill in the pot of good deeds. It seems like forever and the rewards of it takes time to come to you to savour. Just my thoughts towards the subject I could possibly be very very Wrong!

I think that you explained that very well, my friend, and it makes a lot of sense. Some people cannot accept or refuse to take responsibility for their own actions in their current lives, so they would not want to remember their past lives, especially if they were not good people. Others try to learn from their mistakes and do better, so they might remember their past lives, especially if they had a deep love or strong positive memories. Am I correct? I like the aspect that you brought up about paying for your actions in the current life, which might help you to gain and get positive things in the next life, especially if you try to learn from your mistakes and do more good. I do think that it takes longer to get the rewards, but I also think that they are worth working towards and waiting for.

I don't pretend to know, but I would hope that something continues, and if it does, that it is aware. I don't see the point of my consciousness continuing on if it's totally unaware of what it is and where it's been.

I agree with you, Dawn. In fact, I used to think that once your spirit (or whatever you want to call it) left the body, then somehow it automatically became omniscient and had all the answers to the questions of the universe - it just "made sense" to me that it would be like that, although I am not really sure why I felt that way. Now, I am not so sure what I believe, and I was wondering what others thought about the subject.

Hi Purple, I really have no idea what happens to us after we die. I've read a number of books on the topic and I worked for a medium and I had a cousin that was on 20/20 once because he had pictures of ghosts in his home. I lean towards believing that "something" more happens after we die than nothing. I really hope there is. The thing is that even if someone had an experience (I did) that proved it to you, how in the world would you go about proving it? My cousins pictures of ghosts were pretty freaky for sure but they were not clear enough to really prove that they were human spirits or possibly something else. We won't know for sure until we die, I guess. I, for one, hope that there is an after life. I am going to make it my mission to come back and find a way to let people know that there is an afterlife.

"I am going to make it my mission to come back and find a way to let people know that there is an afterlife." That actually the exact thing that keeps bothering me. If there really is an afterlife, and we did keep our memories after we die, then wouldn't more people be "contacted" by their loved ones? There are some instances where this has happened, usually in a "dream" or "vision" or whatever they want to call it, and sometimes the loved ones provide "proof" by giving information to the person that they wouldn't know but could verify. I guess that is the best "proof" that they can have, and I guess it doesn't really matter whether or not anyone else believes it if it satisfies them and makes them feel better. I would also like to think that I would be strong enough to be able to come back and reassure my family after I die, because I think that it helps with the grieving process.

I have a headache answering that Purple. But Albert Einstein said 'The most incomprehensible thing about the Universe is that is comprehensible.' So, the human mind, if wished, can really do the understanding... but all of this thing needs a thourough focus. Focus on this particular aspect then you will know the answer. The bible also had mentioned about keep on asking and you will know, keep on asking and you will find... but I do not know if it is the meaning of it. And one thing, I believe that there is afterlife. There maybe no enough evidence, yet somehow there is some part of my brain that would say there is something beyond this life. What is the purpose of living a good life here? I really could not answer it, but my purpose of living a good and decent life with all I might is that to give essence to this gift----life. I know there must be something of purpose why we are here, and we must seek what is it and fulfill it.

Purple- I do believe in reincarnation but I also believe that it's quite possible that we shall just become a part of the universe, a return to the nothing that was before the spark of life. I admit, I'm still trying to understand this myself but I think that the study of the Kabbalah has had a great effect upon my view of the afterlife. Having grown up Roman Catholic I was raised with the concept of heaven and hell, but I am not sure I view things in that manner anymore. I do wonder if when we die we will suddenly know all that existed. There are some who believe we are gods on earth, so if this is so when we die do we regain all glory of being a god? My own personal question on this subject. I suppose the answer though is that we never know for certain until we die. And that is something that even if a reality I personally try not to think about too much. It is good to question but it is also good to not get caught up in the future too much at the expense of the present moment. Namaste-Anora

"It is good to question but it is also good to not get caught up in the future too much at the expense of the present moment." I definitely do agree with this statement. If you worry too much about the future ... or even the past ... then you will not be able to enjoy all the blessings that you have in the present moment. However, there are times when our minds just go to these things, and now is one of those times for me. I do not necessarily believe in the "cookie cutter" definition of Heaven and Hell, either. I also wonder about just becoming part of the universe again once we die. If that happened, then wouldn't our energy (or spirit or whatever you want to call it) be part of the universal consciousness, which would imply that we would in fact become omniscient rather than just a nothingness?
