What kind of herbs do you grow in your garden?

I have an oregano plant that has already had greatgranchildren as I have given cuttings from it to everyone I know. I also have other herbs but, as a difference from my oregano, they are grown in containers. I used to grow mint in the garden and the plants took over a lot of space. Some other herbs are invasive also or are too delicate to have them mix with stronger plants. I have chives, thyme, rosemary,, parsil, coriander, basil and bunch onions. In my country the climate is mild so many of these herbs live for over a year. What do you grow and how do you grow them? Do you have to put them indoors in Winter? Share please!

oh all kinds. indoors I have Basil in the kitchen, and I'm rooting some Lemongrass. and on the living room windowsill a huge row of wormwood plants. they're being pampered as once they were ready to go out, the weather wasn't right. outside I have Angelica, Feverfew, Sorrel, Woad, Valerian, Rue, eyebright, Mugwort, Meadowsweet. unfortunately I didn't get round to planting any Borage this year, which is one of my favourites. and my garden kindly provides me with nettles and Dandelions, which are very useful plants, and deserve better than to be called weeds. I love my herbs. I plan on having more and more.

You are quite a pro as herbs go, my friend! This year I have four dandedion plants in the four sides of my veggetable raised bed. They are beautiful and I´m going to experiment with them as I heard they were edible.

absolutely edible. and very good for you too. the younger leaves are great in salad. peppery and a bit bitter/sour in a pleasant way. not entirely dissimilar to rocket I suppose. the roots can also be used to make a sort of coffee substitute but I've not tried this. dandelion leaves make quite a nice tea, too. nettles also, are edible, and a great alternative to spinach. again, very very good for you. one of my books says that if dandelions didn't grow so easily, they'd be a very highly prized plant, with their beautiful bright flowers, pretty seed heads and health benefits. it's only their resiliance that causes them to be called a weed.

These are wonderful news! Thank you. Today I´m invited to lunch at my daughter´s house who looked at my 4 dandelion plants with a bit of pity last time. Now it will be my first coversation with her at lunch. Last year she had beautiful dandelion plants i a big pot at her garden but did not use them for eating purposes.

I ended up pulling 165 green tomatoes off those 2 plants & made green tomato catsup & pickled some of them. Just think if they had all gotten ripe how happy i would have been. I hope yours do well. hugs.

Any luck with your lonely tomato, Jo? Here the tomato plants are growing but some unknown beasts are eating the sweet pepper seedilings. Claudia bought big seedlings and gave me 4 plants which I put in pots so that I could take better care of them.

Don´t be a baby! You had a crop! My sweet pepper seedlings are being eaten by invisible beasts. The tomatoes are doing fine up to now and so are the radishes and arugule. Someone had a feast on my only one cucumber plant so now I planted more seeds on containers. The life of a farmer is difficult, even if the farm is a few square feet HUG!!!

At the moment, I only have basil & rosemary growing in my garden...I also like to grow chives and garlis chives but I haven't done so in years. I don't bring them in in the winter but only because they have been planted in the ground and being in a sub-tropical climate, we don't usually get frosts so the plants are fine outside.

Eat the leaves: they are out of this world. I don´t know why they don´t sell them at the markets.

I planted out the garlic cloves that were growing and now I´m eating the most exquisite garlic greens you can imagine. I don´t know if they´ll grow to real garlic plants with a lot of cloves underground. But before I just threw them away and now they are a good addition for sdalads and omelettes.

Right now, the only herb i have is Basil. I planted it about a year ago? from the seeds of the ones I had planted earlier. The ones I planted first came as a kit and had a pot and sponge as the dirt. After I put it in the ground and the babies grew from the seeds. It is still healthy and strong. I have other veggies planted out side and they will probably last through the winter here too.

My basil is probably the ones who are doing best in my garden right now... I usually put it on my pizza when I make it. Pesto sauce is good too but I don't know if my basil bush has enough yet.

I plant basil every year but they don´t always come out as I want them to. But in my country basil is very cheaop when in season so I use my basil to put a little on different foods and buy big basil plants to make pesto for the whole year.

Unfortunately I don't have a garden of my own and could not plant any such things in a large scale.. but what I do is ..I have plants planted in a pots which are kept outside my window... These plants include a rose, a periwinkle and a Tulsi. The first 2 are a flower plant and the third is more of a holy plant.

I can´t plant anything in large scale eitler. I was just telling a friend that an invisible garden beast had eaten my one cucumber plant. I just planted 5 more seeds in containers to see if one survives. I recycle all kinds of containers for plants. Milk cartons with a hole made at the bottom are wonderful. For me, gardening is also a way of helping Mother Earth.

Hiya margi, I love oregano but they don´t like the smell of it even a whiff of it so I don´t grow Herbs they can be a bit miserable like that (grin). I love the smell of Spearmint or Real Mint one of my favourites and also Hierbabuena is one I like a lot too. Can´t grow them round here though like I said. They won´t even cut the Grass or anything have not got green fingers these lot.

I have some hierbabuena on a pot because if they grow in the soil they take up all the space. I could not live without orégano. I use it frsh and dry my own.

Hiya margi, Love the smell of hierbabuena it´s so nice and fresh smelling too. Like I said I can´t grow anything here. I did want to plant some Pink Roses the briar bush type but have changed my mind for the moment also. Oregano is very nice too but they don´t like the smell or taste of it.

I love roses but not so much rosebushes. I prefer trees and shrubs that have leaves all year around. This can happen in my country due to a mild climate.

Hi Marguicha, I absolutely admire you that you can raise so many herbs in your lovely garden. As there exists not so much space for me to grow these herbs,we have raised only three kinds of herbs in my mind. They are Banian,Zygocactus and Aloe, which are all in the flowerpot.

My garden is not that big but I hope that with raised beds at least I´ll take care of some of the earth bugs. This gardening with just some seeds is like playing dolls but is gratifying. Yesterday I added 1 radish (mine) and a few arugules(also mine) to some lettuce salad and it made all the difference.

I don't like to plant herbs in my garden. I like flowers. I'll plant different kinds of flowers if I can buy a large enough garden in this city :)
