Friends, the Durga Puja is over now. During Durja Puja goats were sacrificed in the Samleswari temple in my city. In Kali temple of Kolkata one can see this daily. Now there is another festival called ‘BA-IAL JATRA’ in many villages here. Hundreds of goats, hens, even buffalo are sacrificed. There is a man in such festivals; he drinks the blood of these sacrificed animals and hens. Let me tell you no such things in Samleswari temple of my city. We tried to stop this animal sacrifice for past several years, but failed. It is not easy to root out the religious faith involved. Though we all know that, no goddess will ask for blood of animals or birds. Do you have such festivals in your place or country, are you in favor of such killing of innocent animals in the name of religion? Professor

oh that is too bad. there is no such thing in our place but some kill chickens and use its blood to pour to foundations of houses because of a superstitious belief that it would make your house more durable. that's all. but not many do that.

hi professor no although maybe many years ago the Jews might have done that but am not sure.We do not do that here in the US except for some horrible pagans people who practice animal sacrifice. It is illegal not to mention immoral too and the police keep tracking them down and sending them to prison. Most Americans are certainly against animal sacrifice. I hate the idea myself very much.

Professor - nice discussion. You know I have always felt odd - you bring up an animal, play with it as if it were your child, tend to it when it is sick, feed it when it is hungry, wash it when it gets dirty, and then you go ahead and kill it to get a few rupees into your purchase. I dont eat meat though that animal that is killed has not been brought up by me. I also understand that we've multiplied so much that nutritious food is beyond the reach of many, and therefore, meats might tbe the only way out. And that nature itself has a killing mechanism with carnivorous predators eating weak grass eaters. :) As to religious beliefs, goddesses never asked. It is some unscrupulous individuals who attached some importance to such sacrifices. If indeed goddesses spoke, why cant the faith follower and preacher ask goddesses to remove pains of everybody at one go. But I guess the priests are sinners so gods dont listen to them anymore. Many of the customs, rituals and religious preachings have come down to us by word of mouth. Thereafter they've been written. Over the period, a lot of adulteration has come, with each person who utters or write the holy stuff adding new colors to the original message. What you want to follow should be based on what you believe is right. You will be judged as right or wrong based on that rather than what another person suggests or imposes. Likewise, the same rules apply to others. The only time conflict arises is when one tries to interfere with the other. Conflict is undesirable because it creates a lot of anger, hatred, annoyance, bad words, etc. Its like everybody is reading different text books. Some who have started reading text books for doctorate try to teach things to others who have not yet cleared matriculation. That person is not going to understand!!! We did have Gandhi, remember? They need to mutate and expand thinking. I too feel miserable when I see the buffaloes and goats being taken for sacrifice. I can at the best ask, did you not treat it like your child?

This is so sad! I do not believe in taking the life of any living thing. If God gave life, than only God should be able to take that life. It is just how I feel about it. We did have a group of people in the area that killed cats and small animals as a sacrafice, but the local police was able to stop it. How they were able to do this, I have no idea. But, I am glad it was over and has not happen again for over three years now.

Hi Professor, Yes, I am against killing innocent animals in the name of religion. I could never believe in a God who would demand a blood sacrifice. It is time that people everywhere begin seeing how ridiculous this idea is. It makes God lower than men. Blessings.
