There are so many people that claim to know God but what is his name? The some call him Lord, God , yahweh, Jehovah, even Jesus. Many Say it Jehovah in the old bible times or Yahweh so why did it change and what do you think about it

There are many 'names' for God, including YHWH (which may be pronounced both Yahweh and Jehovah - the 'J' should be pronounced as 'I' or 'Y', not as the 'j' in 'jug' and 'W' and 'V' are very close sounds in many languages). In the Hebrew writings, the name of God was always written 'unpointed', that is, without vowels, which is why it is transliterated as 'YHWH' in Roman letters. Even this name (YHWH, YaHWeH, JeHoVaH ... however it is written in Roman letters) is said to be 'not His real name'. It actually means something like 'I am'. Likewise, the Muslim name for God, Allah, simply means something like 'The One'. Jesus (or, correctly, Jeshua) is NOT a name for God. It is a personal name (and one which was quite common at the time). That it happens to be the name of the person who was later revealed to be 'The Son of God' means that Jesus [Christ] is often worshipped at the same time as God and, by some Christians, thought to be part of a 'trinity' of beings who are, in fact one being. In many cultures, and especially in former times, people do not use the personal names of their superiors. They refer to them using words such as 'Uncle', 'Father', 'Sir', 'Mister Smith' or some such title. The personal name is generally only used by the senior of the junior. If God even has a personal name, we don't know it and we could not possibly use it.

I have to disagree with you, JerusalemFolk (in spite of your better knowledge of Hebrew). The Hebrew characters, of which 'YHWH' are a transliteration, CANNOT be pronounced 'Adonay'. The fact is that they are NEVER pronounced (or, in writing, pointed for the vowels) in readings from the Torah by the faithful. Those characters are always replaced by another word out of respect and honour for the supposed 'name' of God. Sometimes it is 'Adonai' (a respectful plural of 'adoni', meaning 'Lord') and also, in referring to the Scriptures, 'hashem', meaning simply 'the name'. I can understand your aversion to my actually typing a 'pronounced' version of the characters but it was necessary within the context of this discussion. I can assure you that the Lord has given His approval.

According to my faith, JESUS is the son of GOD. and we call GOD as GOD, no personal name really. i joined religious group since it's the only church group that does not tag JESUS as GOD. I am not a Catholic for sure.

That is why I don not agree 100% with the bible because like it or not humans are the one writing and rewriting them. I have 101% faith in God though that he exist like you and me.

I think, no one else except God only knows his identity, personal characteristics, place of habitation, and his power. All the claims of different group of people, different religious teachers and prophets are merely their claims and thoughts to propagate a their faith, ideology and philosophy based on their limited understanding and knowledge God.The concept of God is beyond all descriptions, intellectual analysis, and arguments. The meaning of God can not be bounded by a name, shape, personal characteristics, descriptions and all other traits we describe a human being or any physical object. God is impersonal, all pervading, unbounded, and Absolute Being. One needs to first know oneself before attempting to know God.Thanks.

It states in Psalm 83:18 - "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth". The divine name was mentioned in the ancient scriptures of Bible, as many as 7000 times! But slowly, they started replacing it with the words-" Lord" "God" and that change has been mentioned in the first few translations saying they were placing "Lord" "God" instead of God's name "Jehovah". So it's evident "Jehovah" is God's personal name. Jesus is the son of God and the meaning of his name is "Anointed One" or "Messiah".

God does not have a corporeal form; it does not have a distinct, separate and a material existence. God is a principle, which is present in all things. All things are because of him and he is because of them. The word God is not a name, it is just a identifying appellation signifying its status or function. Likewise, the words Yahweh and Jehovah also are other identifying appellation. Jesus is not God because Jesus is an entity. We cannot call ourselves as Sons of God because we do not have in us his essence, but that of Adam. He alone had in him God's very essence.

I fine God not having a personal name a little odd because everything has name. Words like God and Lord are title and can apply to both man, and spiritual creatures. To say that he just God sounds so impersonal and one cant really say they know him. Even our children my call me dad but if I was known as just dad and place in a room with with other dads.. then my son call all dad in the crowd and we all said what yes to a small child it it confusing and the child or even adult may be lost.. Yes, our children know our personal name and it would help him to identify you out of the crowd.. Name of the true God helps to separate him from false gods like Zeus, Jupiter, and Baal

timelord40, you can be dad to only your son but God can be dad to all. Here lies the difference.

Isaiah 42:8 (Young's Literal Translation) I [am] Jehovah, this [is] My name, And Mine honour to another I give not, Nor My praise to graven images. Psalm 83:18 (King James Version)That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth. Exodus 6:2-3 (American Standard Version) And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am Jehovah: and I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name JehovahI was not known to them. You decide?
