A friend of mine, who also is my co - worker, who constantly have computer problem with his laptop. From time to time, I help him fix up his laptop. He is closed to 70 years old, and he told me that he plan to sign up one of those computer class at night time. Don't you think he is too old for it? I taught him some basic methods, and how the computer goes, but he seems don't understand much, and he always forgot it. So, maybe he should enjoy browsing the net, and do the basic stuff instead of learning those programming or designing stuff. What do you think of it?

I teach my father the basics in computer. He's at his 50's now and often times forgets even the easiest details on how to use a computer. But it was a feeling of fulfillment when he started to get things the right way and lessens his forgetfulness. He is even using the Microsoft Office Word. Later, He learns how to surf the net and finally found himself having His own profile account on a Famous social networking site. I admit it was very hard to teach older folks especially the ones who were not able to experience these innovations during their teens. But everybody deserves to learn. Give them a chance. Patience is the key. And it is indeed a great feeling to help one out. It's priceless how you are able to change peoples perspectives in life even through computers.

You are never to old to learn. my mom did not pick up a keyboard until she was fifty and now she is on it every day. Plus when you get older you have nothing to do but sit around all day. Computers are a way for him to occupy himself , plus it can help him retain focus at his age when your memory , and other things start to dull. Him actually starting to learn computers will help him sharpen his mind.

I agree with you, Reed. We are never too old to learn new things for us. Being illiterate should not shun you away from learning. And by teaching, you are actually learning. So, teach and learn; Learn and teach. It's a never-ending cycle.

With his age, I would suggest the same. Instead of getting headache with the programming and designing stuff, he'd rather enjoy browsing the net.

Yeah, because he has memory problem from time to time, and he is not sharp anymore with his old age. I would suggest him to stick with the basic stuff, and enjoy what he can learn from those baby steps.

I think if you are worried so much, then you should accompany him to go. He maybe old but he can learn as well as everyone of us until we don't want to learn. There is no limit.

Nobody is too old to learn anything. Learning is a never ending process. Though using of computer is something of high technology, but it's still alot simpler than a decade ago whereby everything is really from scratch. Since your friend has the interest and has already taken initiative to sign up for computer lessons, u should encourage him. Won't it be good if he can handle his own problem in the future or u prefer he calls u for help every now and then? It's a win win situation for both parties isn't it?

Nobody is too old and when has the determination. I always believe that age is just a number and that doesn't have to do with what you are capable of doing in your life unless you allow that thinking of being too old to succumbed you. My grandfather was over 70 when he went to the US and worked at the Mayor's office of LA. He learned computer and adapted to American's culture without any troubles at all. He worked there for more than 10 years. Now he's at his 90's and his room is on the second floor and is still playing games with computers, doing sudoko and all stuff.

If he's having memory problems I think its good for him to be taking computer classes or learning anything new because it will help with memory problems. Learning new things keeps your mind working and sharp. Your never to old to learn something new. :)

No he isn't too old to learn the computer. I don't understand how to do alot of things on the computer myself, but with reading hot to do things, what need to know sticks, what I don't understand flies out the window. If he keeps searching on how to do things on the computer, he will eventually find something he really enjoys. One of the first people I chatted with when I got the net was 78 years old. Your co-worker will learn what he wants to do eventually if he learns at his own speed.

As we all know that a saying "It is never too late to learn" So for me, I think he is close to 70 years old, but he do has his own thought. Then it will be Ok, he wants to learn about the computer, so in the bottum of his heart, I think it will be Ok for him to enjoy the computer.what is more, we can see that the computer is not so difficult for us to learn now. Just wish he can manage the computer so well.

If he has the will to learn I don't think he's too old for that. Computers are mostly intuitive, so people who like having their things done and are not willing to learn can never learn to use a computer, but your friend is willingly going to take computer lessons, so I think that's the first good step. Because of his age it might take him longer than a person with a younger brain, but I hope he can make a good use of those lessons

No, he's not too old. If he has normal intelligence and is able to function normally in his job, he's perfectly capapble of taking a course and learning from it. I doubt that he intends to do anything like programming, but there are a lot of things he can do besides just browsing the net. Have you considered the possibility that you're not very good at explaining things, or that he needs more repetition? A class will give him the chance to go over the material until he learns it, instead of having to just go on to something else the way he does at work.

It is really inspiring of your friend when he says he wants to learn computer at this age. In-fact, you should start motivating him for the same. Remember, Life will come to standstill the day we start believing that there is nothing to learn in life. This feeling is the greatest sin of man-kind. I believe that a life comes to an end as soon as he starts thinking that he is too wise and too old to do anything. This is called submitting oneself to miseries. Therefore, He should be encouraged more and more with positive remarks to make his learning a fruitfully happy journey

I think your friend can learn about basic knowledge of computer . Nothing is impossible as long as he is enough passion. It is difficult for him to learn about those programming or other...but basic stuff is impossible.

Learning doesn't require age. If he really wants to learn those programming and designing stuff let him be. As you say he is about 70 years old and as of that age he knows what he is doing. There's no harm in trying, let him try that class. I'm sure if he make difficulties he will be the first one to quit. As a friend, a role is to support our friend in whatever they are doing :)

It all depends on the friend of yours. I have seen people at 70 learn things if they are savvy about it. I myself struggle a lot if I have to teach my parents some of the new gadgets that are available these days. But sooner rather than later they grasp onto it and they find new uses of it that I do not envisage or use. Cheers! Ram

I think nobody is too old to do something he/she wants. Age is just a number, if a person is really interested to it then he/she won't let anything hinder him from doing those things.Although he might forgot some things you have taught him, just his driving force to learn how to use the computer and internet is really amazing.. so,i guess if you plan to teach him do it one at a time,i guess that would help.

He is absolutely not too old to learn more! You are never too old to learn new things, especially when it's a subject that is growing everyday! He has every right to want to catch up, and I give him kudos for that! Technology is becoming more and more prevalent in our lives, and it would only be natural for him to want to learn more about his surroundings so he can become more familiar with everything. I think it's awesome he is applying himself, and going forward with this. Age has nothing to do with it a bit.
