How long is your attentiveness?

In listening to a lecture during class or seminar, can you make it up to the last part without being sleepy and your full concentration is just focused on the topic? In my case I can't do it no matter how interested I am in the topic, I can't help it. Maybe I have attention deficit disorder, I don't know... So most of the time I end up almost sleeping in the middle part, then I will just read more information regarding the topic in order for me to understand.

Hi dear, For me attending a seminar or a class room is not a regular practice in these days. Most of the trainings and training informations are carried out through on-line process and we have mandatory 2-3 trainings in a year, which I used to attend. As such trainings are more fun filled and day long process with different topics and persons, I may not get bored. But if the training is continue immediately after the lunch, I may feel little sleepy. However, if the trainer or the subject are feasible, I will concentrate. But I had such boring periods in colleges when I was a college student. All those days are a kind of dream in these days. The best way to avoid sleepyness and boring is that just be fully involved with the subject and be proactive with the subject. This is the best way I try to avoid any kind of negative feelings while attending a class or a seminar. If we are fully aware of the subject, be patient with the them and suffer, nothing else we can to at such times. Regards, Thank-s

I enjoy fun, witty, factual lecturers and don't get bored with them. In most occasions I don't sleep alot but yes, there are really times where a subject is so boring and you can't help but nap for awhile, lol. You just can't help it otherwise, I do bit my lip or something just to keep me awake. But I always commend good speakers who are good with the subject they are dealing with.

As for me, it depends on the person lecturing. How he/she talks? Is his/her voice that well heard? Does he/she have confidence when talking? etc. Also the topic is one factor to it. But if we say its a normal lecture or seminar. I would probably be writing down notes. Because that way i won't end up getting sleepy plus i can review it after the lecture.

Hello navi33! I think you're right, it depends upon the case. Sometimes there are factors that really affect how everything will turn out, topic is quite interesting but you can't understand the speaker or no matter how good the speaker is but if you're not so interested in the topic, your full attention can't be put in it and you might easily get distracted. Oh glad to know that writing works for you. Thanks foe responding! ^_^

It depends on the lecturers style of lecture. If it is not engaging then I will simply doze off. Some people have a way of asking questions in the interim of the lecture to get you to stay alert.

Hello Ms. Hardworkinggurl! ^_^ hmmm... yeah, asking questions is somehow effective because it gives me the feeling of uneasiness, so somehow I could stay alert...^_^... I'm a shy person, haha! I guess everything is case to case basis..Thanks for responding.^_^

I don't know why every word that comes out of a lecturer's mouth turns into a lullaby and I have to battle against my eyelids from falling. Yes, when a lecturer started talking as if I'm listening to a music that makes me feel so sleepy. And what I do to conquer this? I would pinch my arm secretly to keep me awake till the bell rings for snack time. Afterwhich, the dilema would start once again. I tried listening with my eyes closed but I ended up snoring... kidding aside, it's just so hard to listen to a speaker talking the whole day through. No amount of cups of coffee would keep me awake that's why in between lectures, some lecturers would let everybody stand up and do a little stretching and do a short game to keep everyone alive and kicking. I'm better-off when it would be hands-on training on computer. In this way, I'm more focused.

Yeah, you are right, this thing normally happens, but in my case I ll never sleep if the topic is so boring, my attentiveness ll decrease but I ll never sleep during a lecture or seminar. Attentiveness for me depends on, how much a topic is interested for me and how much knowledge or information a certain topic have. Some time a topic can be very interesting, but when you listen to the presenter you ll notice that it is just the basics for you so at that time you ll not pay attention to the topic and for me I ll think about more options about that certain topic....:) God Bless you...:)

During college days I would find it difficult to last a lecture more than 15-20 minutes if the person delivers the lecture in a baritone. But if the professors were good then I could last upto 45 minutes. But beyond 45 minutes, it is very difficult of me to sit attentively. Or at least there have to be some rounds of humorous moments which arouses the interest back. Cheers! Ram

It really depends on the professor. Although I really do try to pay attention throughout the entire lecture, I find that it's difficult, as I really do have attention deficit disorder, also referred to as ADD. So, things such as this do require a little more effort. I do my best.

For me it depends on the subject. I really dislike physics so usually, I can never make it to the end of class without getting sleepy. However, I never get sleepy in my biology or english class (unless I got no sleep the night before). One thing that I see helps my attention span is to keep yourself busy. Like in physics, if I get really bored I start taking notes, or playing around with my stretchy eraser, or anything to keep my hands busy. And I actually do not like english that much, but because we're always so busy in that class that my brain doesnt get the chance to get sleepy. So yeah, just try to keep busy and you shouldnt get too sleepy too fast.

I have a very very short attention span that I end up chatting up with my friends or texting away.. but if the speaker is great and with sense of humour, then I can stick to it until the end.

I learned that the average attention span of people is around 30-45 minutes. ;) I do sometimes sleep in class or in lectures, but what I usually do to prevent myself from sleeping is to scribble on things. I know it does not make sense but at least its not that embarrassing if the lecturer will call your attention because you fell asleep.

Hi dear I cant do a single work for a very long . As i will continue to do the work it starts to make me feel tiring and then i want to sleep. Hence it might be due to the decrease in interest in doing some sort of work. Thats why our brain feels lazzyness and tireness
