Are you a procrastinator?

I am. It irritates me but it seems no matter what my intentions, I always end up procrastinating and waiting until the last minute. For example, I should be writing a research paper right now but I'm on myLot. What suggestions do you have for changing my behavior (besides getting off myLot and getting to work, that is)?

I like the rush of trying to get things done at the last minute.

Sometimes I joke that I operate better under pressure, and for some types of assignments, like writing, I think this is true. However, for other things I find I don't do as good fo a job as I would have if I'd spent more time on it.

I am so pleased I am not the only one who suffers from this condition, reading this is like reading my own excuses and ways of being. Thank you for making me feel not so alone in my procrastination

Both of your comments are very helpful. Thank you! Now that school is out I should have more time to catch up on my myLot reading.

Hi! Oh, yes, I'm a terrible procrastinator (or a great one depending on how you look at it haha). I should be working right now, but instead, I'm doing mylot! Oh well, I hope I get up the energy to work soon. Mondays are hard days to get back in gear sometimes! :-)

I have to say yes and no to that question. I am a procastinator when it comes to things I don't like to do, like changing oil in the car, cutting and coloring my hair and grocery shopping. In general though I would say I am not a procastinator. I shop for Christmas and birthday presents all year round. Of course I love shopping for gifts. I have all my Christmas shopping done and my tree up already. I'm usually looking forward and planning things I need to do in order of priority. Mylot has not helped, I am totally addicted. I belong to another site similiar to mylot which is very addictive as well, it is gather.com.

You sound a lot like me - if I dread something or don't enjoy it, I try to postpone it as much as possible, which of course just bites me in the end. If it's something I enjoy I don't put it off. Like myLot, I love being here so here I am. :)

I am a Procrastinator as well. I am always waiting until the last minute to get things done that I am supposed to get done. As for being in myLot when you are supposed to be doing something else, I can relate. I am always here when I should be heading out the door to do something as well. Like now. I should be getting ready for work, and out the door, and instead I am answering this post.

"What suggestions do you have for changing my behavior". Pain is a great motivator. If we as people find ourselves in a position where procrastination has caused us a significant amount of pain we will seek out a solution to the problem. The difficult part is to correctly identify the problem. I am a cronic procrastinator. I put things off less now than I did a few short years ago though. I found that the root cause of most of my procrastination was fear. When I find myself procrastinating, I can simply ask myself what am I afraid of. The answer presents itself after enough serious thought. For many mundane tasks that I need to get done that I put off the answer is simply that I am afraid that I won't have time to do what I enjoy if I do everything that needs to be done. Of course I spend more time agonizing over not getting things done than actually having fun. Only you have the answer to your question. It can be quite difficult to be honest with ourselves about why we do what we do, but after we accomplish transparency with ourselves and our motives we begin to accomplish more. That is my experience.

Thanks scrubradio. I haven't seen you around in awhile - it's good to hear from you again. That's a good point about the pain - ie: learning the hard way. Sometimes I think my problem is related to avoiding something that I'm afraid of, other times it's just something that bores me so I avoid it. I guess boredom qualifies as pain, too, though. Right now I should be completing an assignment for an online course, and it's almost the end of the semester and the course is now boring to me, so I find it difficult to get motivated to do the work. I'm off to work on it now, though.

Mylot is probably a big one! It is for me anyway since I joined. So addictive... I am a procrastinator as well. I think part of my problem though is I am soooo busy I cannot decide which item to concur first. So, instead, I just play on mylot. lol No seriously, maybe if you are like me and you have so many things to do, you could try making a list and prioritizing what needs to be done first. That helps me sometimes when I am procrastinating so bad.

I agree cpamanda, I do use lists and they do help. I just have to set firm target dates to get those things on my lists done, or else they just don't get done.

I am not a procrastinator. But I do find myself procrastinating at times when I really don't want to do something. LOL Most of the time I will be the one that says why wait when I can do it now. But other times, I just don't want to!!! I try to tell myself that I will have to do it anyways...and then I procrastinate some more. But I will eventally do it. LOL

Yes, me too. I know I am supposed to go and do the shopping now, but then I think just one more discussion and then one more etc. I do it with other things as well. Phone calls I have to make and I think, do it later or tomorrow etc. Then I dont do it and when I think about it again I think now it is too late to contact them. The only way I can get over my procrastination is to set myself a task, and then reward myself with something I really like doing or having. But it is hard. Now, get off mylot and do some work.!!

Brendalee, you hit on the most important part - as long you you're getting things done it shouldn't matter.

I'm in the same boat as you! I am a huge procrastinater. What's worse is my husband is one as well, so getting us both to do what we should be doing is very daunting. MyLot has been a problem of late as well. I should be cleaning but I'd rather be on myLot having fun!

Yes, I am a procrastinator. At home and work. At work I've been in a mode where I let my projects slide right into the deadline. Things get a bit crazy because I am not more disciplined in my approach.

Like what Nike said, "Just Do It". Everytime you know you are going to start procasticating again, just get yourself up and start moving. Soon you will realise once you started, you won't want to stop. So take out that paper and pen and start you research paper : )
