I think it depends on how good their health is, how good their reaction time is, and how good their eyesight still is. You can't really generalize about these things, because among the 70 year olds who drive I bet there are quite a few that are in better driving condition than loads of teenagers who are out on the road. True, some of them are in no condition to drive, but not all of them. I think it should be between the doctor, the family, and the elder whether or not they should still be able to drive.

I agree with you.I trust more this old people driving than the teens since they know more how it works well and they can control it but I think it will depend.

Exactly. It varies from person to person and you really should never generalize about these things. Their doctors and their families will be able to tell whether or not they should still be able to drive. It should be up to them.

I guess it's okay as long there are capable in driving. My granny is already 80 years old and still driving her car on the way to his work. If you are living in west it is important to be independent even if you're already old. Granny still working and traveling miles away just be at work and there's no one available to drive her to work. She doesn't want to be dependent though. I like my grannies sports car and she's still fond of cars even at her age.

As long its capable of driving there is really nothing to worry about it.My dad is around about 64 and his still a good driver. What this survey concern about is the car accidents happening around our city.

Well I think its normal that people would feel that way...cause most of the seniors above 70 have bad eyesight. So I guess its for their safety as well that they don't drive anymore.

I think if they can see above the steering wheel and are lucid then they should be able to still drive. I have seen little ole ladies that didn't look like they could see over the steering wheel. I would worry about these people. And I have seen on the news where old men have driven into buildings. But then again I have seen on the news where young people are texting and cause fatal accidents. Live and let live. If they can still pass a driving test then leave them alone!

This is a very difficult topic. For instance my mom and daddy are both 69 and 70 and they are both excellent drivers with no accidents. My biological father still drives a truck for a living and he'll be 74 on his next birthday. He also has had no accidents. However, there are some people who should not drive a car after 70 because they are not able to. But then I know some people who shouldn't be driving at 25 too! It's not fair to lump them all into one and take their independence away just because of one.

This is not a simple question. I agree with myLotters here who say that 70 year old people in good health have a right to drive. But I remember that about 10 years ago a good friend of mine had a terrible car crash. The car she was riding in was hit by the car of an old man who suddenly appeared on the road.

That is the reason why our city Conduct this survey as there are reports that most terrible car accidents is ranging 70 and bove and some dont have license.

I don't see why not. After all at seventy, one may still be healthy and strong. Unless medically certified as incapable to drive, senior citizens should be allowed to carry on driving.

Good grief! seventy is not old! A generation ago maybe 70 was the beginning of old age but not these days. My father was 91 when he stopped driving. Another friend of mine was still driving at 93. Both people were hale and hearty and did not even require spectacles to drive. In our country, 65 is the retiring age and there is a huge trend to become a "grey nomad" which is to hitch a caravan or trailer to the car and go travelling all over the place. For a retiree, 70 is still young. The and have the rest of their lives to enjoy and being able to drive is one of the things that gives them independence. Here in Australia, if your eyesight is not totally healthy you may still have a restricted licence to drive short distances from your home as required.

Yes for me it is better for them to stay at home and relax. They are all retired what we called so better, also good to them to be happy at home. If we let them drive still at their age some are having problem in health so if this happened and they are in the middle of driving they're at risk. And aside from that there are so many reckless drivers. More and prone to accident.

Hi, From my point of view,as long as the person who is 70 years old and above is fit and healthy enough to drive a car, then it is fine for him to drive along the road. I believe there is no law stated that elderly can't drive a car. It is basically depend on individual body's condition. If they think they are fit enough to drive, then just go ahead.

I should say it depends. There are a lot of 25-year-olds who shouldn't be driving because they do not obey traffic laws. On the other hand, if the 70 above drivers are healthy, have good eyesight and reflexes, then why stop them from driving? Old folks I am sure are more careful on the road than drunken twenty something.

Well it depends upon health condition of the person, if he is able to move his hands, legs, can see and hear well, he can drive, here in india our health problems start at 60+, so you see less senior persons driving.. Thank you so much for this discussion. Professor. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead. God bless you. Welcome always.

I believe all drivers should be thoroughly & frequently tested by a few independent authorities, regardless of age. Personal speed limits should be established based on driver competence & policed accordingly. I believe in this day & age we can do this. Road accidents could then well be a thing of the past. This will also vary from country to country of course, depending on the quality of their infrastructure & the road worthiness of the vehicle being driven. If you want to have the privilege of being able to drive, you must earn it & continue to prove you are worthy. This will also make it easy for employers to assess the best employees, landlords to select & keep the best tenants, etc, etc. Proven track records & monitored case studies will give others a clearer picture of just how responsible, etc a person has been on a consistent basis.

As a general rule, people who are 70 years old and above should be discouraged to drive a car. This is because at this age, most people are believed to be sickly, frail, have failing eyesight, and are slow to respond or react to outside stimuli. And because of this, they are prone to accidents which may affect themselves or other people. But on a case to case basis, exceptions to this may be allowed. Especially, if the person is exceptionally strong, has good eyesight and more or less alert and quick to react to situations. Even the Bible acknowledges the truth that man may last up to 70 years old, maybe 80 if he is strong. (According to Psalm 90:10 - Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures;)

well, it depends. i think 70 year olds are fine but when people turn 80, then its a little more worrysome. their reflexes just arent the same.

i think they should at least be required to have a test every now and then to make sure their not a danger to others on the road. i've heard some stories from people i know being a passenger with elderly drivers. lol, they talked about how freaked out they were to be on the passengers side with a few of them.

I don't think taking the driving privilege from senior drivers who have proven that they are good driver, is fair. I think teenagers are worse drivers than senior driver. These drivers are more careful because they have to prove to the public that they are still viable people and not just someone to put away and forget about. The survey is not evidence that older people causes more accidents than teenagers. They don't go out and joyride weaving in and out of traffic or wrapping their cars around trees. I think the driver's license of anyone who has a bad driving record should be denied; this includes senior citizens. It is unfair to just say, "when your 70th birthday rolls around, whether you have all your factories or not, you must give up your driving privilege.

When I was in law school, one of my professors was an 80 year old lawyer who still drives his own car and he even dared us to race him as he didn't want to be insulted with his age. Although for him he's not troubling anybody, but I believe that he did at that time as he drives the car too slow. He still had good eyesight then but he really was too slow and that kind of driving can cause traffic in a narrow road here in my city. I really believed they shouldn't be allowed to drive anymore.

I think that after you hit a certain age, like after you hit 50, every 10 or so years you have to retake the drivers test. simply because there are sooo many elderly drivers that CANNOT see or don't have the reflexes to drive defensively if necessary. Its scary. I've seen many accidents, I lived in Florida for a few years, which is notorious for its retired/elderly population. Some can drive just fine. My grandmother drove just fine until she was 80, then she decided her arthritis was too bad for her to drive. So i think it's a case by case situation.

In my opinion it is not safe for people who are 70 and above to drive. It is not safe not only to them but also to the people on the roads. It is better to implement rules at 70 or above a person should not drive irrespective of his abilities. If you say if you are capable and physically fit you can drive, then nobody want to say we cannot. So it is always safe for them as well as for other people for them not to drive. Happy mylotting Calpro
