Social Networking site becoming a security threat?

I don't understand how one can think that social networking site like facebook can be a security threat to a country. This is exactly what one politician in our country thought and has called the government to ban facebook in our midst as a form of censoring any influences that might jeopardize the growth of a benevolent society. This unprecedented calls to ban facebook comes as a shock to many of my country folks who find it not only foolish and seeking political mileage in our multiracial Malaysia but gagging the mouths will not deliver the votes instead will bring their immediate fall from grace. This only indicates that there is a need to change the guard at the helm if politicians are not mindful of their words. http://malaysia.news.yahoo.com/bnm/20101206/tts-shahidan-facebook-bm-993ba14.html Unfortunately in our cyber age, one cannot confine news about such refined behavior to one's own backyard. Not only can other people hear about it, they can even see it. And it becomes terribly hard to figure out what the purpose of such pure mindless behavior might be. But when one resorts to basic things like brute force, then this betrays a rather limited level of education. The Tarzan School of Social Interaction. What do you think of facebook, have they become a threat to a nation security? Should it be scrapped from dominating the cyber-world?

I don't think so as it is the best way to stay connected with your loved one. It is just rumor that the social networking sites, as facebook, could be a security threat to a country. In spite of facebook being a security threat, we should enjoy of it.

You are right. How could it be a threat when people enjoy socializing in facebook and the best place to connect to friends and relatives in distance places.

These social network sites are like online data banks which contain your private informations. If the owners or a ''burgler'' decided to use these data in a way such as distributing them at companies to know what your shop habits are, or if they learn a small secret that you have and trying to blackmail you, then yes, these sites would be a security threat. But nothing of these has happened yet. At least so far.

Sounds quite dangerous to expose our true identity over the net. Anything can happen that might jeopardize our safety.

Im not really fond of people who use their power like that. I do have a facebook page, don't do alot on there like i do facebook but look at it a couple of times aday. I got soooooo many nice birthday greetongs on there last friday that i really enjoyed. Sometimes if it wasn't for fb i wouldn't know things about my friends.I don't know how safe it is but i do know the young man that started it has become a very rich young man. Good for him, i like to see young people do so well.

Facebook has created a world sensation and has generated huge followers all over the world. Probably some quarters fear that facebook is becoming a breeding ground for bad hats so the need to ban it before it become uncontrollable.

I know what you mean! if we start letting politicians, and governments dictating what we can watch, join, do, where then is our freedom? it's a bit scary yes? I do not mind facebook as it help me communicate with family and friends from far away...I know some people can post some nasty things but those are few...what about the rest of us!

We should exercise our democratic rights and not be swayed by politicians who have split tongues.

FB trouble - one can get killed in FB
Hello Zandi, Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Let me see here. We have facebook too/ we also have some users not only insults politicians and leaders but also makes fun and mockery of other religions. in some, most specially christianity or some other priest who makes a fool of themselves being part of politics. Believe me, If Government in the Philippines would Dare Ban Facebook, the Administration will face ONE HELL of a huge Protest. they will see it as an act of dictatorship and oppresses the freedom to express oneself opinions about Leaders of the country. I guess at some point we are blessed to have even more freedom expressing ourselves. Some news can be propaganda or not real too but that's what freedom of expression is for.

Going to the street to protest is not be allowed here without police permit. Those who defy the law of the country risk being locked up without trail. We've got a notorious prison here for those who spread rumors of anti government or those who incite racial hatred will be detained under the Internal Security act.

I am not a Facebook user. But I am aware how some exploit it on a small scale to take advantage of individuals- burglars targeting those on holiday who might give away information without realising. If I had secrets to broadcast I could do so on almost any website, so I cannot see that Facebook would be unique in it's possibility to be used to that end. In that respect he might as well being considering internet censorship as a whole. That has a rather Chinese feel about it......

I still don't understand whats with the Facebook.. It's just another social networking site allows u to connect with your friends and relatives across the world..How could this site be unauthenticated and become a threat? Not many sites are banned in my country, even if they ban some site , they will call back it within a day or two.. We are living in a Republic country where i am independent to view any site of my own and i am legally satisfying the age criteria to view facebook.. Who the hell would ban facebook in my place??

I don't think that social networking sites can become a nation's security threat. Now, it's Wikileaks which is releasing so many secretive diplomatic documents that is posing a threat to nations around the world. Social networking sites can only, as what I believe, become a threat to small children who are creating their accounts using false ages and information.

Wikileaks is presently the hot news everywhere but just not interested to know what they are all about. I agree facebook can be a threat to children as they are fast to believe what others say.
