Vegetables in freeze

I buy fresh vegetables daily from the market 500 meters away from my home, usually my granddaughter Subhee goes with me. It is kind of mini morning walk for me. I buy different vegetables like cauliflower, egg plant, carrot, cabbage, French beans and some green leafy vegetables ALL FRESH!! Like all families I too have the latest brand of freeze, it claims it will keep vegetables fresh, but my experience, is really bad, the vegetable stored there look ‘dry’, lose their taste too. Do you buy vegetables daily, or buy in bulk and keep in freeze? Do they really keep fresh? Please share. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

my hubby owns a garden behind our house. Gardening is his hobby. So in summer we eat very fresh (just pluckig from the plants) vegetables. That is an extra happiness. But in winter we use bought and freezed vegetables. Fresh vegetables can#t be compared by freeze vegetables.

I buy fresh vegetables in the spring and summer, when I can get them at a good price at the farmer's market. However, I only buy what I can use that week, since I don't like to freeze fresh stuff. I agree, they just don't taste as good. During the rest of the year, I just use frozen veggies unless I see a good deal at the supermarket. It's not as good as fresh, but buying everything at the grocery store would just raise my grocery bill by too much!

Some of the vegetables you have to blanche, that is put them in boiling water for a few minutes and then immediately put them in a bowl of cold water with ice in it. The trouble is if you live in a sub tropical country, getting water very cold is hard especially if you do not have a fridge. I assume being a professor you do. Here is a link that might help you. http://www.ochef.com/617.htm You also have to seal them in a freezer bag and make sure all the air is out. I hope this helps.

I have a Kenmore with a bottom freezer and I love it. The thing about the link was that I never knew you could freeze eggplantI. I am watching my sugar and I often substitute eggplant for pasta.

Well, I have been buying frozen vegetables, because fresh ones go bad to quickly in our home. I really don't like canned vegetables, as I find them to "mushy" and there is way to much sodium in them. Frozen vegetables are the closest to fresh. They keep quite well in the freezer. I wish they could some how freeze lettuce :)

Hi Professor! Me and my fiance buy both fresh veggies and those frozen ones. We believe that it is best to keep the frozen ones when we run out of the fresh ones which are what we use first. It is indeed difficult if you buy fresh veggies and then they loose their freshness and get soggy or dry out. We never buy in bulk as we don't know if we would need to use it a lot (Especially fresh ones.) Do check with the company who made this fridge or freezer (or both) if they have something to say about your veggies being kept fresh because I think it depends on the vegetables really. They don't last that long if placed in the fridge but if you put them in the freezer, inside a plastic bag, I don't think there'll be a problem of not prolonging their freshness.

When my husband was in service we were in North India where we had a piece of land behind our house where we used to grow vegetables. We had a nice time eating fresh vegetables from the garden. But now in a big city we hardly find land for ourselves so has to buy and store vegetables. We buy from the main market which is about six to eight kilometers from our house every week. So we eat vegetables in freeze. But as it is only a week's time the vegetables do not go bad and there is also good taste in the vegetable. So it is basically according to the convenience whether we can afford fresh vegetables daily or should eat frozen vegetables. Happy mylotting

Hi Professor!. We usually buying vegetable every 2 or 3 day because we can not go to fresh market every day. We pick vegetable for 3 day and put it in fridge. I know vegetable can not last more than 3 day because there are certain vegetable thats high perishable like lettuce. We usually use Tupperware fridgesmart to store the vegetable and its maintain the vegetable freshness in fridge.

Well when I live with my family, we do not buy vegetables from the market because we grow our own just 10 meters away from our house. We also do not have an electricity yet in the village so we can't have freeze, means we are eating fresh vegetables everyday. But when I go and visit my fiance' we have to buy foods and vegetables from the market because he lives right at the centre of the big city. And we do keep our vegetables in the freeze. Have a nice day

Well since my family have a allotment here in the United Kingdom we do not need to buy any fresh fruit or vegetables or even frozen ones to much but we do buy them sometimes in the winter when we cannot grow them.A good tip for growing them yourself is keep them in the ground as long as possible and until you need them as they will last longer and will keep on growing dont leave them to long though as they will start to go to seed and look kinda horrible. When my family do buy vegetables we buy half from the grocery shop about a mile or 2 miles away and some from the local supermarket as if you was to buy it all from the grocery shop the bill would come to high and it would just be way to expensive to buy. When we go to the supermarkets we do normally buy in bulk aswell to save money so we will buy a whole load of potatoes one week instead of just buying a few in which will cost you more. Good luck in solving your problem out.

hello Prof, I don't have much time to do the marketing and grocery time as often. So,i buy vegetables and other goods that lasts for a week and keep the vegetables in fridge. What i did before i stocked the veggies in the crisper is,i wrapped it with clean magazine paper and then wrapped again in a plastic bag and put in the crisper part of the fridge. It will keep the vegetable fresh for a week. have a great day always
