Public Jeepney Issues

please pass the fare - paying the driver
Philippines

Note: This topic focuses on those who ride the Public Utility Vehicle Pinoy Jeepney, most specially the commuters who rides on it. But others are welcome, am not sure how can you relate. Well, I have my time to ride on the Jeepney when ever i go to far away places that is way beyond my usual walk distance. Okay Here are some Issues that I have to experience when ever I ride on a Jeepney. It's not on the daily basis though. * Passengers would seat on the Rear of the Jeep.when a new passenger comes along, they would open up their wallets and bring the pennies and...(Mama, Bayad!) Here's my fare please pass. but most of the times, the passenger thanks back for bringing the change to them, some don't (as if it's daily routine). - So when ever i get the chance: 1. Either i sit next to the driver. 2. Seat on the REAR fast after paying the driver 3. I do what Rear Passengers do (people, please pass it down). * Passengers never drop by near or at least few centimeters to the destination or the vehicle stop sign, they want to be dropped to the EXACT location! they never like to walk anyways (e.g. PARA! , or STOP) 1. even though it's bothering the traffic 2. at the moment where the Jeepney is about to overtake the other vehicle 3. Or when they wake up and realize they have pass their destination :D * When Passengers sleeps, they just go down doesn't care or realize they are bumping to another passenger. well, i don't mind if it's a sexy lady who accidentally sleeps on my shoulder(OH,YEAAHHH) * Jeepney Drivers are Mostly RACE CAR Drivers. So, you may wanna hold on to something when they stop because since we are sitting side ways, we may end up sliding from the jeep all the way outside. * They seldom automatically gives back change immediately. either some drivers need change or simply they want you to sleep it off and then forget that you paid extra with out getting the change. but some passengers don't pay either. e.g.like this women with three kids, she just sit there with the rest of the passengers and doesn't pay at all while she makes every one think she's distracted in feeding the baby or baby sitting them. another was a man from the rear, when the driver remind of those who hasn't paid yet, the guy paid and was shoutingly saying where he should be drop off, i guess he's busted (lolZ). * They're (drivers) Multi-task People, they drive while receiving pay ment and giving back change. even bother texting/calling while driving as fast as they can. that's why some bring their wives or friend to do the accept pay. * Some Drivers smoke, they don't care who's breathing it from behind.. So, that's it folks. you can share you're own, have a great day!

in manila, i seldom use jeepney as transport. i'd rather take the bus even if the jeepney route is much more convenient for me. jeepney is mostly my last resort. but in baguio, i ride jeepneys all the time. that's the main mode of transport there anyway.

i have to agree with yallit... baguio has some of the nicest taxi drivers and you can expect exact change everytime. and i haven't experienced any hot-headed jeepney or taxi drivers there. i used to joke with a friend of mine that perhaps it has something to do with the climate. much cooler in baguio than in manila. hehe

Hello Yallit, Busses are a lot in Manila that's better of in the LRT routelines.well, they are no different from Bus anyways, they also collect passengers. I haven't been in baguio for a very long time. but would hoped they are doing better drivers than the ones in manila

lol. here's for sure: most drivers (taxi and jeepney plus bus conductors) will give you the exact change! up to the last centavo. nyahahaha. And "standing" mode on the bus is not allowed.

We don't have jeepney in my country but I had that first and last experience of riding on a jeepney in Manila. It was a frightening experience for me as the driver was driving as if there was no traffic law, beating the heavy traffic jam zigzagging his way in between the traffic. When he suddenly stepped on the brake, the passengers were flung from one corner to the other. Have never experienced traveling in a public transport with a rowdy driver like that jeepney driver. Luckily I did not die of heart attack during that ride as my heart was pumping at an extraordinary beat until I stepped out of the jeepney.

Hello Zandi, I wonder Zandy, when was that you experienced with the Jeepney driver? The thing is, it still exist still today. that's why part of my discussion was always to hold bars when ever the driver goes rowdy. of course, i wouldn't like it if they do it at night since it could cause some accidents.we used to get that trouble all the time.

hi LK! back when i was a student in manila, i also experienced the same scenarios as your experiences. unfortunately for women like me there are a few additions from the ones you've mentioned above: i used to see a lot of jeepneys with loud music on. like there was a rock concert going on in the street. and you have to speak on the top of your lungs just to let the driver know where you are going. and since you can't hear each other, he'd ask once again and you have to answer as loudly as you can manage. they didn't even think of lowering the sounds of music. uhhh then there were jeepney stations that you had to fill-up before the jeepney could go. unfortunately what they thought as a 20-seater capacity sometimes is hard for full-bodied passengers and can only manage 16 (8 on each side). the rest are squeezed. sometimes, just half the butt was on the seats. hehehe then the fact that children are free provided that they sit on the adults' lap. yeah right. i know that people want to save on the fares but they should have a heart for the children. sometimes i see mothers with 3 kids in tow and an assortment of bags and groceries and she'll only pay for 1 person. uhhhh (i sometimes had to carry one of the children myself because i was afraid they'd just go flying off once the jeepney hit on gas or stepped on the brakes.) then there's also the rush-hour rush when everybody is rushing that when you flag down a jeepney it wouldn't stop... it would only slow down enough for you to quickly step on it and it will go off even if you weren't properly seated yet. uhhh and double uhhhh another is when you ask the driver to stop and he'll drop you in the middle of the road while the stoplight is on red. but then you have to rush because anytime soon it will go green. uhhhh i'm not saying all drivers are bad. hehe far from it. there are nice drivers actually. especially in our area. i'm now more fortunate that i don't have to battle it out in the manila traffic and rush hours as i live in the province. we do have jeepneys around here also and because we don't have cabs here yet, as much as possible i try to limit my jeepney rides to about once a week and favor aircon buses instead.

I don't mind if the passengers don't appreciate your efforts on passing their fare towards the driver. Its like something common and you can often sense that silent gratitude. They move their lips as if saying 'thanks' or an expression from their faces would give it away. There are other passengers who even try to imply how inconsiderate other passengers are on this thing by really emphasizing 'your welcome' in a very disapproving tone. (^_^") I really like sitting at the seat beside the driver, preferably a long seat and not those that are obviously only for just one passenger. It gets inconvenient when you get to sit there and another passenger also tries to join in. If the seat next to the driver in not available, I prefer to sit at the middle of one of the long benches if not one near the opening. Seems like when the driver really tries to maximize passenger capacity, the middle section often gets the passengers that have their knees sticking out. Very inconvenient when that happens. I really like the jeeps in Manila. They are more spacious compared to the ones I get to ride when I go to work. I have to bow my head a bit since the ceiling would often be low, my reason for liking the seat next to the driver since the elevation of the seat there is not as high as those long benches. I really like getting seated next or close to pretty passengers. You can really get close to them without being awkward. I guess I can consider that as a consolation compared to the number of inconvenient things that I have to go through when I ride those public utility jeeps.

Well, driving a jeep isn't something that can easily get you as much money as you would like to have. Especially when you're raising a family and sending some children to school so, most of those who own old ones can't easily modify their vehicles as much as they would like to. There are lots to consider when one wants improvement, but it'll be all easy if a well prepared plan is fulfilled.

Hello Ratyz5, Jeeps in Manila has gotten big over the past few days. i noticed that when i was in college, they are jeeps that have installed primitive customized air-conditioned devices already, but not all of them are as good.sometimes, i ride on the small ones, even if they are too damn old. It's nice that jeeps are evolving slowly, in Makati some jeeps are fully airconditioned like buses. I have already mentioned things in my discussion. but i hope improvement happens in the future.

Hello Hatley, Well, It goes the same thing for my country because drivers and conductors (bus ticketers) gets only commission from the number of earnings they get in the getting number of passengers.so, they don't give a damn if it's not the right bus stop, as long as there are many passengers. they wouldn't let you ride unless there's a traffic officer standing by.

Sometimes, i get irritated by those passengers who would sit on the farthest end from the driver's seat when the two of you are the only passengers yet , then would say "bayad po" without any please and as if i am a kundoktora. Of course i have to extend my hand to get the fare but on my mind i am thinking "why can't she go to the driver herself to give it?". I feel like blurting out "ano ako , kundoktora?" Then, there's this girl passenger whose ends of the long hair would slap my face. I would really tell her to please have her hair kept in a way that it will not slap my face. Then, there was also a time when a tenner/passenger stopped the driver and he stood right away while the jeepney is coming to a halt, but was knocked down because it stopped abruptly. Good thing, he didn't hit his head on the floor and just stood up laughing. Oh how i hated the driver for doing that! If such happened to me, i would surely get angry at the driver!

Hello Simplyd, I hate that too, but probably there's no choice since am on the middle position and in a hurry.that's sad part of riding on a jeepney i believed.well, we could tell girl with the long hair to hold hers instead. i remember a driver telling a story to another driver that a women's long hair was accidentally stuck in one of his tires

The jeep from my view in the bus - The jeepney in front of the bus.
I was guilty on sleeping. I was very sleepy and tired and my head fell on the older women's shoulder. I worked 28 hours in the hospital and that is how doctors work =)

I have been guilty in one occassion. although it was a van and i slept through it on the rear, just for a passenger to wake me up realizing that am already leaning on the women beside me. of course, i apologize though.well, just look for an opportunity to seat in the rear so that you won't have to lean on other passengers

Good afternoon my lotters,, Nice topic huh! :-) we'll riding a jeepney is enjoyable even if it's kinda hassle. this is my mean of transportation going to the office.. You can be in a same ride with people in all walks of life.. When i was a student I go always for a "Patok" Jeepney.. because when you're in a hurry "Patok" jeepney flies!!! :-) And also while in the jeepney you can enjoy "manong driver's" playlist.. soundtrip!!! That's what the things I like about jeepneys. Its inexpensive means of transportation compared to others here in the Philippines like FX, or cab. The things I dislikes about jeepneys are: When you are the only passenger of the jeepney and you are seating at the middle of the seat, then someone will ride at rear and then they will pay the driver. because no one is there to reach for the fare except you, then you have to do it.. I hate that kind of situation.. Another is in a traffic jam... when you are riding a jeepney... you will get all the smoke on the road.. when you arrive home you feel that greasy and dirty feeling in your face.. then your instinct tells you to wash it right away. :-)

Hello Raygicaro, Welcome to mylot. I agree with you on the first sentence, that's why if you don't like paying that passengers fee you gotta seat on the rear or else just pass the fare.of course, when am not in the mood, but there are times that i usually on the mood and then i would pass their fee. Another thing is that when you're the only passenger, they would have you transfered to another jeep because they want to go home and don't have decency to take you to your destination

that is why when you will ride in a public vehicle you will surely experience many things,as what you have exposed here, because i think that everyone surely experienced these all, sometimes its an advantage sometimes its worst so good luck for us.

I have been riding the King of the Streets ever since college but only this past year I have experience truly riding a jeepney. I usually ride the jeepney to go out of town and return home but like you, I had a major issue with the 'punuan' scheme of the jeepney. It understand that the scheme is economic and practical but I really don't appreciate being squeezed like a fish in a sardine can. Also, I usually take the bus when I'm on the run and the jeep won't leave immediately because there is a specific number of passengers before actually starting. (I usually do this in the morning and besides buses fill easily). I agree on your statement that jeepneys are like horses on the wind especially when they are on main roads. I have to shout just to remind the driver to stop and when it does stop, it's awfully not the stop I'm supposed to get off. Another complaint (I am really unloading here) is that's sometimes drivers do not exactly follow their destination. On cases like this, I feel that I have been cheated on my fare (7.00 is precious, people). But the jeeps stops and won't go any further so I don't have a choice but to get off and walk to the supposed destination instead. But hey, they are still people like us even though they consider themselves Kings of the Road.

Hello Jean, I've rode this monsters since elementary, and even experience falling from one when i drop by with out telling the driver and he moved to my surprise. being driver isn't easy to begin with but WE are their responsibilty and they shouldn't always think about money, destination but also their passengers. specially their safety. with the rising cost of fare i think they should be more responsible now than ever.

this morning I just had the most stressful jeepney ride ever!!! You forgot to mention drivers who only see's passengers but couldn't hear when a passenger wants to go down! I had to take a 3 jeepneys to get to my work and every driver of the jeepney I rode on this morning was like what I mentioned above!!!!!!

Hello marapples Well, that is kinda understandable. not to mention the noise, the distance between the driver and the passenger is hard to be heard when he has to focus on the road.but the good thing in my experience is that when one says stop it's updated by the passenger near the driver.i guess they are still a bit sleepy in the morning. i also seat in the front so i would know even if you mentioned stop but not shouting it it's useless. some drivers have hearing problems as well.
