salute to worthy teachers

I cried gallons again today...just for watching a home movie...the Dead Poet Society. A heavy movie. But I love the ending. Mr. Keating (played by Robin Williams) was unjustly terminated by a very tradition school and upon leaving his room after getting his personals, the students---dramatically one by one--stood up in an unorthodox manner and said...My captain, my captain." Quite a salute. Would you go out this way gladly or stay for security's sake?

I agree; very fine movie, very fine. The end is enormously moving. Robin/Mr Keating was incredibly charismatic, and went out of his way to inspire something genuinely original and creative in his pupils. To make education exciting, challenging. Most have us have known teachers who've veered that way, without perhaps going to the lengths Mr Keating did. Which begs the question: was he just that little bit too unorthodox? Perhaps so: For a system, any system, to work, there must be a chain of command, and an ultimate authority must be honoured. So I'd make sure to stay within the bounds of that authority personally. But as you say...beautiful, tragic movie, and one of Robin's greatest ever performances.

Hi carhalling. I agree with you that there are teachers who go out of their way to make learning exciting and interesting. It is a movie so the exaggeration. Amd yes, we live in a structure and we act within that structure. I like your response. Loved the movie, too. This was my third viewing, actually, over a span of time. Thanks for your response.

Definitely an awesome movie. A must-see and even though it falls on the genre I dislike the most which is drama, I loved this movie all the way through. It's quite touching and very interesting. I just wish though we can have more teachers like him whose best interests are always for his students and their growth as an individual and as a group.
