Substitute olive oil for butter?

Can I do that? I used a half a cup of butter and a fourth cup of olive oil yesterday rather than three fourths cup of butter. I would like to make items as healthy as possible. Can I just substitute the olive oil for butters? What about honey for sugar? Will these two work or are there other changes I have to make as well?

Yes, it is possible to do that, but most natural fats are better when they are not heated. I am reading the newsletter by Dr Mercola and according to him, the best fat you can use for frying or foods that need heating is coconut oil. It is supposed to stay healthy even when heated. I have often used butter for baking, it gives a wonderful taste - I never buy margarine. Virgin Olive oil is great for salads and we can pour it on the food when it is already on the plate and has cooled a bit, all to keep it as healthy as possibe.. Happy cooking..

Nowadays I fry very rarely, but lately have been using coconut fat. Earlier I fried with butter and tried to keep the temperature low. Sometimes it is possible to do like the Chinese, fry with water.. I prefer to use olive oil cold, as I am not sure what happens to it when it is heated. I take cold pressed oils from gnld.com in capsules as they have proven to be very good to keep our cells healthy. Also nuts have some good oils when they are not heated..The cell membranes consist of fats, so we need good fats so that they function well and we keep younger!!

You know, I remember hearing that coconut oil is one of the best - if not the best to use! But it's pretty expensive. How do you fry things? I have been using olive oil for several years now. I do use real butter some too though!

Hi In my family, we don't use olive oil, here in india olive oil is not popular, but we use sunflower oil for cooking, we use butter, but as clarified butter oil, this we call Ghee, it is costly, about 400 rupees for a kilogram, sunflower oil costs around 90 rupees for one kg, Pal oil, rice bran oil are cheap.. Thanks for sharing Best of luck. Professor

Rice bran oil sounds healthy to me. I guess sunflower oil would probably be pretty healthy as well. I use olive oil most of the time and real butter the rest of the timE! Thanks!!

Personally I know someone where I work that has done this with Olive Oil and substitutes it all the time for butter, and usually uses that as a Salad dressing on salads mixed with Lemon Pepper seasoning as well. As for Honey I know it is supposed to be much better for you, so this is probably a good thing, just might sometimes make things sweeter.

Yes, I am back to using some butter - but I only use real butter when I do. I also use olive oil in most things but some things need the thicker consistency.

Olive Oil - My Healthy Oil
Yes, you can always do that and in fact it is indeed a healthy step. Olive oil is good for the heart so although it costs more I still buy this oil for my cooking. I even avoid using butter at all. Honey over sugar is good but make sure the honey is really pure. I think people should now learn how to cook and eat the healthy way.

Yeah, I've been trying it, but there are a couple of recipes the oil doesn't work as well for...I do use real butter when I feel like I have to have butter. And I use honey. I have a real good recipe for some oatmeal bars that is all healthy, natural ingredients. They are pretty good too! Thanks!!

It really depends on the recipe. Some things (i.e., cornbread) just really need butter. Olive oil does work well in a lot of things, though. Honey and stevia are both good substitutes for sugar. Although, stevia only works in some things; it can sometimes give food an odd taste. Even moving to raw sugar rather than refined sugar is a good step. Also, using fruit juice in some recipes (such as marinades and sauces) works well.

True - I know pastries need the consistency of butter. I don't use stevia just haven't tried it yet. But so far the raw sugar is working pretty good. Haven't noticed anything bad yet anyway!

I don't know if it does work but I just want to ask if you've considered the "light" butter as an option because I think olive oil cannot totally replace butter. That's just my opinion. We, nowadays, use light butter or sometimes the butter with olive oil (I think that's what it was that I saw). With regards to honey for sugar, my fiance said syrup would be a good substitute for sugar. Do tell us though if there's a taste difference when replacing butter with olive oil and honey with sugar. Happy cooking!!

What little I've tried I have just used part sugar and part honey so I didn't really notice much change in taste. I have used some molasses for sugar too. It's got a very different taste though that doesn't compliment all recipes!

maybe in some cases, not all honey is better than sugar, at least what I heard anyway but I only use honey with tea, everything else I use sugar olive oil for butter, well if it's virgin olive oil I'd say better than butter but it won't taste as delicious in cooking baking wise, I don't think you want to use olive oil unless recipe says so this is coming from not-so-good-in-the-kitchen by the way...

I never tried to substitute the butter with olive oil but I'm sure it can be done. I do know of recipes that let you use honey instead of sugar. Sounds like you're on the right path to eating healthy.

I know you can substitute honey for sugar and it's better if it's natural. I think it would be okay to sub olive oil for butter, since you can sub applesauce for oil. I would try it!

I think if it's natural butter it's probably not too bad ( not like the fake stuff) but I'm trying to go more plant based rather than animal based! I had heard applesuace works too...ty

I substitute olive oil for as much as I can. I like to think it is healthier for my family. If I run out of sugar I put honey in my coffee and tea. It tastes a little different.

ya olive oil is always healthier as compared to butter because it contains less fats. Also using honey instead of sugar is also a good idea... it will definitely improve your health... :)

I think it depends on the recipe a bit. But in most cases you should be able to do it. I think you can also substitute white sugar with brown sugar in case honey does not seem good. Or sweetener. They have some really good ones now!

I've been using a "raw" sugar that is less processed and it's not white. I do have some questions about it though... it's brown in color but I don't know if that means it's any better for me! lol!

Hello friend, lately i use a lot of olive oil instead of sunflower oil, because my mother has a friend, who live in Greece and her friend send her sometimes some olive oil in big tin boxes. My experience with the olive oil is much better than the sunflower oil, first of all when the food is prepared, it's not so heavy, i don't know why, just noticed it soon and i feel much better when i finish my eating. And second thing is that when i fry something with olive oil, it's much easier for me to clean the spots from my oven instead of cleaning the spots of sunflower oil. Now i have something like 6 liters of olive oil again and i'll be happy to use it. In my country the olive oil is too expensive, something like 5$ for every liter and the middle salary of the people is like 250-300$ so we can't afford buying it very often if we have in mind that oil is needed for every kind of cooking. I can't use something else than sugar, i don't eat chocolates, waffles and cookies, so sugar is great for me in the coffee, but nothing more. Honey is really good product and healthy for sure. If i'll have to eat something sweet, i prefer to be some sweet fruit as orange or banana, because fruits contain vitamins.

Yeah, I know that fruits are the best way to go anyway. I have made some recipes using honey and yogurt (without added sugar) in them they are pretty good. I also fry in olive oil and certainly do like it a lot better!

So glad to hear that you are taking a step forward friend in choosing healthier alternatives over what we had been so used to and what most would consider "unhealthy", keep it up, it's a good start for the coming year, wish you all the luck cause it would take some time and effort getting used to.

I've been trying to make several healthier switches. Especially since I started training for the half marathon. I don't want anything to hold me back! I don't use anything but olive oil or real butter generally. My daughter brought some margarine the other day as she was cookimg something here.
