What do you do when you can't sleep?

My wife will probably tell you that when I can't sleep I bug her. Usually when I can not sleep it is when something is on my mind or bothering me, so I talk to my wife who is trying to sleep beside me. She has a good way of putting things in to perspective that often helps me, then next thing I know is I am sleeping and then she can't get to sleep. I am so bad. How do you handle it when you can't sleep?

My sleeping patterns get disrupted quite a bit. When I experience days on end that I cannot sleep I try to quietly leave the room so that I can either go online and or read in another room so that I can somehow get drowsy and be able to get back to sleep. My boyfriend also is great about helping me during such times, as he will most times ask me what is bugging me and disentangle ways to get them out of my mind. However, he is like a rock, he can lay back and fall asleep in a flash. LOL..

My wife used to, now she has trouble getting back to sleep after I wake her up, because then she starts to worry about what I was worried about. I really should not do that to her.

I have heard that when you can't sleep, it's better to lie there and just relax rather than getting up and watching tv or reading like some people do - that getting productive wakes you up so you can't get back to sleep even more. If your mind can't get to rest, at least your body can recoop a bit. My baby son still wakes up at night, so I have no comment about getting any real sleep. But I will say there are times I just wake up and my gears get going. During those times, I just lay in bed, close my eyes, and let my gears run until "maybe" I fall asleep. Otherwise, if I am able, I come out here and get on the computer - a no no because I will then stay on it for hours and then I'll pay for it the next day!

I do that too, then I just start thinking about stuff even more. Hard to read because I would wake up my wife. I suppose I could go down to the couch and read and hopefully fall asleep there.

Hi the daddy m: Wow, you have an amazing wife that can understand these situations. That's awesome. Unfortunetly I am single so I can't talk to anyone if I feel sleepy. I usually try to think about peaceful or beautiful things. Another tip that really helps me to sleep well it's to make a mental plan with the things that I wish to do on the other day. It's a very good distraction and it makes me go to sleep. However try to find your own way to sleep way, maybe telling yourself a relaxing story, counting things, reading a book etc. ALVARO

Excuse me! You made me laugh! What you said is true and good advices you give. But when I try to think of myself making plans for the next day steps... there my nightmares would start. You see, I'm an accountant and we close the year 2010, we make inventories, our taxes laws have changed... I can't sleep any more. I wish you a good night to all of you. I go wash my brains loool!

I let him sleep lol! I used to be like that some time ago. Too many thoughts were going through my mind and couldn't solve anything at 3 a.m. Only after a good sleep, in the morning everything seemed to be so clear and non-foggy. A lime tea or a glass of milk might help you to relax. Don't wake up your wife to make love, do that before she falls asleep lol. I learned to be patient and if I can't see a way out, maybe things will turn another way next day. Let problems go away when you go to sleep. Think of something beautiful instead.

It may sound childish but I actually try begin imagining things that I actually want to dream. Then my head automatically continues the dream and I end up falling asleep. :)

Well, it depends on what's keeping me awake. I have some pain issues, so if pain is keeping me awake, I medicate until I can fall asleep. If it's something else, I'll read and snuggle with a cat. There's nothing like a warm, purring cat to help me relax! Of course, I always give my hubby a warm hug and kiss before I sack out. His hugs are the best!

Good day thedaddym, I am a terrible sleeper. I am 54 years old and a female so you know what is happening to me. I am having sever hot night flashes and they wake me up and I am sweating so bad I feel cold. So it takes me awhile to fall back to sleep again. Sometimes I can't fall back to sleep so I get out of bed, like this morning at 5:30am, and I make myself a cup of coffee and I log into mylot and start posting. That made me sleepy so I went back to bed and slept another hour. And I am now back in mylot again. Maybe it will make me sleepy again and I can go back to bed. Cheers and happy mylotting my friend , chris

I can't sleep quite often. I usually light some candles and grab a book to read. They say getting on the computer will only wake you up more, so I try to avoid doing that. Reading in the candlelight usually relaxes me. I have also tried some evening yoga, but that seems to wake me up too. I also take some Tylenol PM before I start reading. That seems to help me sleep.

For me when not getting sleep I read books or watching movies. Then when my eyes feel sleepy that's the time I go to bed...

If I can not sleep I usually drink hot milk with out sugar. After than I wash my face, hand and leg with cold water. After that i usually already feel fresh and able to sleep. If I had someone who hurt my heart until I can not sleep. I will work hard during the day so at the night I will feel so tired even I don't have time to think and feel.

Would you believe if I tell you my best secret to sleep? Well it's very simple, I'll open the television, lie on a sofa and by watching the tv for a minute or two, I fall asleep. This is my habit since I was a child. I hope this will apply to some other people. My friend tried this and it worked with her. Happy sleeping.

hello thedaddym! well, i hope it's okay for your wife to be bugged especially when there's time for her to really get rest. well, that's what spouses should do. when one finds it hard to sleep, the other one should help the other to get rest as well. but, if you can manage to sleep alone, then why bother ask for help of others, right? for me, i don't have a spouse but i have my niece beside me when i go to sleep. if i find it hard to sleep i would just go listen to music on my phone or go play games with my cellphone or just close my eyes and see things on my mind that will make me feel relaxed. in that way,if i get tired, i can be asleep without me knowing it. i think that if you always think of many things or do things awake, that will not help you to fall asleep. just try to relax and close your eyes. don't think too much cause thinking can also stop you from being sleepy.

If I can’t sleep, I usually play Sudoku on my cellphone or read a pocket book. I sometimes just lay in bed, close my eyes and dream about my dream house. In this process, I find myself eventually sleeping.

I hate it when I can't sleep. I sometimes have nights where I can't go to sleep and then finally when I fall asleep it is almost time to wake up. Then I don't want to wake up and get ready when it is time because I am so sleepy. I will usually cut the tv on and watch it or read a book if I can't sleep. I try not to do anything too loud so I don't wake everybody else in the house up. If I watch tv then I cut the volume down real low. I can't sleep when things bother me either or if I have something on my mind that makes me just keep thinking about it. But there are times that I can't sleep just because I can't...I won't have anything on my mind or nothing bothering me. I guess it's just that my body isn't ready to rest. lol

I rarely Want to sleep. I usually stay up until 3:30am . My best suggestion is to watch a movie. Or do anything to calm yourself down. On the rare occasions I Nedd to get to bed early , I watch a film.

When I was in my first trimester of pregnancy with my third child, I suffered from insomnia. I've tried several things such as watching TV until there's no more good movies to choose from; tried to do some reading; surfing the net using my phone; and listening to soothing music. Well, talking to my husband was not an option because the minute his head hits the pillow, he's sound asleep.

If I can't sleep I get up and read. I used to get on the computer, but then I would be up much longer than I wanted or needed to be! Now I turn the computer off and won't turn it on again until the next day. They say if you start with your toes and relax everything you will fall asleep. That doesn't really work with me. Sometimes I just concentrate on my breathing and that helps. If not then I get up and read for awhile. After an hour or so I can go to bed and have no problem falling asleep!

There are many times when i cannot get to sleep. Sometimes i will get some jobs done around the house, quiet ones so that i don't wake my son up or the neighbours. I also sometimes come online to catch up with emails and sites like this, or watch television or put a dvd on, better to do something that just lie in bed being bored waiting to just fall asleep. Atleast getting other things done will tire me out more and give me more free time the next day.
