Hubby's friend came our house this morning while passing this street. My daughter in law, asked him, why he advised her NOT to dry clothes in balcony, which can be seen by others. He said, 'Beta (means kid); don't get me wrong, you are new to this Metro city, it is not your Sambalpur home, more over you go out frequenly locking this apartment flat on 3rd floor.Criminals, thieves are active here, from the cloth hanging for drying on balcony etc, one can guess If people are here or out? How many members live here? How many male/female/ kids? They may plan to do any thing.' Well he was so right, we were so happy. Better to dry in roof top, none can see. Please comment on this clever answer. Do your friends give you similar advise, guidence? Please share. kalyani

Wow, what a wise advice. I thought the only reason behind not hanging clothes in balcony is for beautification purposes. It's an ugly sight to see clothes hanging in places where people can see, especially for underwear. But your neighbor is so right. People can get information about you by just looking at the clothes hanging on your balcony. In some places I've lived, people don't hang branded clothes outside because there are thieves who steals them, especially at night. I had that bad experience where all our branded jeans were stolen from our clothesline, including all shoes on our doorstep. I'm in a new neighborhood. The first day we moved in, a good neighbor came and advised us not to leave expensive things outside our house, especially shoes, even if we have fence and we lock our gate. Thieves can get in if they see there are valuables worth risking their lives for. It's hard to trust people these days. It's sad but true. It's good that there are still concerned citizens like your neighbor and mine.

There is a new kind of thieves, they have long, folding type bamboo poles, with a hook in the friend, using this they can pickout things, even through your window. thanks for nice response kalyani

Oh, smart guys. why don't they invent something that would help them earn money in a right way. Using sturdy clothes pin would be a clever idea. Thanks, Kalyani. Blessings to you, Ruth

You know, this is quite wise that a person would inform you that a theif would operate in that way. I would have never thought of something like that on my own, however, I also have to say that I'm not able to think like a theif. However, after hearing things stated the way that you've done here, I think that in the future I will be much more careful with the way that I take care of my things so that theifs won't really know anything about our family.

Hello Kalyaniji, I think he (friend of yours) learned the psychology of thieves. It is a good advice from him; of course it helps your son and his family how to take care from the thieves and what necessary steps should be taken to live in that particular place. But on the second instance, if I think deeply, what I felt, do we are living in democratic India where we want to give extra care while drying cloths even. We have to hide the cloths from thieves otherwise they can find out how many members are in the family etc. it is scaring to listen about the security threats in a particular place.

Good advice by Sardarji. Well people have resorted to petty crimes like theft due to unemployment and corruption. The evil cause of people going the wrong way is the government policies. The politicians are filling their pockets with money and they are just not bothered about young generation.People who are from poor families just cannot make their both ends meet due to inflation, corruption and resort to such heinous activities.

That is very smart advice. I just found out something similar. In the US many people put little stick figure figures on their car windows. They have a stick figure to represent each person in their family including pets. Child molesters know which cars to follow now. We make their job easier. When they see the parents out without the kids they know they have a better chance to get them. What a sick world we live in.

Oh so this was the reason why he didn't want you to hang clothes outside. I find it his reason right. People might find out how many people living inside by the clothes. That's a nice one. My answer from your previous discussion was because of the underwear and such. Didn't thought about this though. :)
