Why Is Your God Is Better Than My Gods?

What is the virtue of giving your loyalty and belief to a single God. The human species has believed in a multitude of gods far longer than a minority of people have embraced a rather curious concept of a single God. By far the oldest religion on this planet is Animism. Animism is the belief that both animate and inanimate objects are inhabited by spirits. If the spirits are not pleased they have a tendency to work mischief on the people around them. This belief is accepted by more people and over wider geographical area than any other religion in the world. Is there any good reason that people who embrace this belief should forsake it in favor of the Johnny-come-lately belief that there is only one God?

People should not rely on any beliefs. They should search to discover the truth. Do you search???? Or do you rely on the belief that God does not exist??? Beliefs only point a direction one might search for the truth. If we value beliefs over all else, one can never discover all the truth. This includes those who believe and don't believe in God. Perhaps, it's time to search with an open mind to discover the real truth.

If you read my post it does not state that I do not believe in a god. I do not believe in a single god. I do accept the existence of many gods and spirits. For me this is my "Real Truth."

Perhaps I should rephrase the question. The question here is why he is monotheism preferable to polytheism? Is there some inherent virtue in worshiping one God instead of many?

Hears my thought process, 1. A. Jesus wouldn't be as famous as he is if he wasn't who he claimed to be, correct? B. I mean out of the 12 disciples that followed him of whom he picked up from the streets they were kiled; tourched all because of this man who was a complete stranger to them, yet they still confessed Jesus as the Son of God. Why would 12 people give up their lives for this guy if he was just pulling a trick on everyone. Thats my theory. C. And if you believe in Jesus you must believe in God they come as a pair you can't believe in one and not the other. 2. Over half the world is Christian, and its been the dominant religon for so long. So don't you think we would have it right for over thousands a years rather than have been wrong. Cause if your saying Christianity is wrong, thats kinda like saying that 3+ Billion people are wrong. 3. All other religons was somewhat based off of God. Its like the tree and the other religons are the branches. The tree came first 4. From say 800's-1800's the world's history shaped around God and Jesus. Something so big can't be a scam.

So many people know about Harry Potter, that he must really have spent 7 years of his life slaying Lord Voldemort. I mean, how could he be so famous unless every single word of the Harry Potter "gospels" actually happened, exactly as it is written by the "prophet" J.K. Rowling? Tons of people (unsurprisingly, belonging to the same church of which you speak) believed the earth was flat for hundreds of years, and they were all wrong. And please realize that the Christian religion is hardly "the tree". Christianity is based off of (some parts directly copied, and some parts merged with) religions that existed long before Christianity/Judaism.

Hello Chiang, You seem to be having a hard time getting the response you need here. You are right about the concepts of animism and monotheism being very different. I have actually read a lot about animism and find it very interesting. I however, could never follow it as a spiritual belief. I do not understand why a spirit would want to inhabit an inanimate object. That was always a stumbling block. That does not mean that I do not have the greatest respect for those who follow such a spiritual concept and other spiritual concepts. Diversity makes life interesting. The Johnny come lately belief you refer to is Monotheism. Hashem or Adonai...The Creator or Master of the Universe. Has always been here. We as a people just did not always acknowledge Him. The earliest people knew Him but turned their backs on Him and it was not until Abraham again accepted Him that He came back into our lives and Judaisms roots began. The christians may have lost Him by the need for a physical god. They had to have a tangible god so the had their jesus even though HaShem said there was to be no gods before Him...the christians feel they must go through this jesus to get to HaShem in order to get to their heaven. I really wonder what HaShem will say to this when the meet Him for their judgment. Does that answer your question?

Thought cannot know or even understand anything about Gods.. for Gods have NOTHING to do with thought. What do Whales ,Dolphines ,Pigs or Monkey's believe in?...what about Trees or Plants and rocks?... all these came into LIFE through the powers of Gods yet they do not ask themselves if they believe in certain Gods.. they just live their lives and then die just as we live ours... The whole of exsistance is nothing but One energy , One Vibration that keeps giving and extinguishing tiny particles of its own energy.

I think people have the right to believe in any god that they want and others should not judge one another and be respectful. The same pretty much goes for religion I never do like when people go around trying to convert others to their religion it never seems right.

Ah - interesting discussion Chiang Mai boy. Frankly I dont recall any scripture specifically saying Buddha is greater than Christ, or Christ is greater than Buddha, or Rama is greater than Allah, or Allah is greater than Rama. Some shrewd priests who want to ensure the survival of their children and grandchildren in the same profession try to create boundaries and wars between religions, so that they become powerful and remain in power for generations. Effectively, people fight, and priests reign. Have you ever known priests going and fighting for the religion? They only incite people like the politicians. As to spirits - I think as long as we dont have scientific explanations for things, we tend to attribute it to spirits and super natural beings. Over the years, logical explanations for many things have been found. We should then be accepting them, and moving on instead of clutching to the beliefs that no longer have any value and which are likely to make us a laughing stock.

Saying "My GOd is better than your God" will just bring an arguement . It is your own faith that is more important rather than saying whose better or not.

I think that there is a certain "advantage" (to some people or cultures) to monotheism. In the stories of polytheistic cultures, there is often conflict between gods or instances where 2 gods are pulling a mortal in different directions. Since this is almost inevitable with multiple gods, and impossible with one, it seems preferable to believe in one. This is because humans look up to gods as divine examples, and gods getting into petty squabbles, or even gods that simply don't agree on the best course of action, don't seem like great examples for humans to follow. Of course polytheism has advantages -- like the fact that it is easier to find a god one resonates with that may be one's "patron" god.

Some beliefs now a days are from our ancestors ancestors, they are all belief according to their human abilities. As other mylotter said we have own choice to have own belief to their own culture and tradition. However, the true God is not allow to have multitudes of gods other than HIM (true God), but He allow such choices to the human being in order to realized the importance of true God. As for me as Christian I believe on God. see you around

Before you argue with that concept, you must think of this first, "is there a god?" Have you seen him? and why is God noted as he and not she? Have you not thought that god is man made? have you not thought that god was created by humans so that they have someone who is so powerful that they could blame unbelievable and miraculous things that happen on this earth because of the presence of a god. Have you not thought about it?
