Please Pray for my Little Schatzie

My Poor Schatzie Baby - She is so miserable
United States
February 8, 2011 6:13pm CST
Last Friday my little Chihuahua seemed to have a problem with her eye. I took her to the vet, not my usual vet as she was booked out, Another vet examined her and put some kind of drops (dye) in her eye and looked at it though a special device and it showed she has a Corneal Ulcer the size of a pin head. I was give drops and instructed to put one drop in morning and night for 10 days. By Monday morning she was in so much pain and could hardly open her eye so I went back to the vets and was lucky enough to get my usual vet when she saw how bad my poor little Schatzie was doing the ulcer had already tripled in size in jut two days so the Vet kept her at the clinic all day and put drops in to dilate her eye. I got her home last night and she was wearing a collar to keep hear from scratching and now is not only in pain but has trouble eating and drinking. She hates the collar and bit the vet on the lip while she was putting the collar on her. I was really embarrassed when I saw the Vet's swollen lip but she said it was her own fault. I have to have her back at the clinic at 9am to have another Vet check her out. I am praying that she does need any of the surgical procedures they were discussing but can be treated with medication. Have any of you every had a pet with and Corneal Ulcer? Cats can get them as well and seemingly the Boxer breed is very susceptible to these kind of ulcer. She is the dog in my ID picture but I am enclosing a photo of her how she looked today.

I am so sorry to hear the bad news about your little dog. Looks like she isnt having to much fun with that around her neck. I do feel your pain as i had my last dog have that raound her neck to not eat her IV off of her leg and it was terrible and i hated having it around her neck and didnt want her in pain at all. I hate the pain they have to go through and i wish sometimes they could talk and let us know what is wrong with them because you never know until they start crying or you see they arent acting themselves. I hope everything turns out good for you and the little dog you have.

God love her, I can tell she's in pain and not at all happy! I'm so sorry you and her are going through this and I'm already praying for her. I'm not positive, but I think my daughter's one shi-tzu had that once. I know it was on his eye and it got pretty nasty. The good news is, it didn't take long to get better and he was fine in no time. Please keep us posted on how she's doing. Annie

Thank you Annie. I am just praying she does not need the surgery as it is growing so fast and surgery can leave scar tissue which then can cause loss of vision. I will find out today what the next step is.

Absolutely white I will have your Little Schatzie in my prayers. Just a couple days ago Gabby did the same and so many of us pulled together while Gissi was on last, what seem to be of his life. Today she updated us all with the wonderful news of Gissi recovering. So YES, my friend your Little Schatzie will be in my prayers. As the Power of Prayer does wonders. God Bless and I hope he gets well.

I am really glad to hear your boxer has no problems. "Indolent ulcers are most commonly seen in older-aged dogs and Boxer dogs of any age; hence the term “Boxer Ulcer.” http://www.hopecenter.com/PetLibrary/IndolentCornealUlcer/tabid/165/Default.aspx

Thanks Gabs I know you understand the agony I am going through watching my baby in pain. Now with the collar she has trouble eating and drinking. At first my other two little ones did not understand what was wrong and were unsure about her collar but they have become used to it. I was praying and thinking about Gissi and now my baby needs your prayers.

It seems some breeds are susceptible to corneal ulcers but Chihuahuas are not on the list.

I am very sorry to hear about your poor dog. We had a bad time with our dog about a year ago, she developed kidney stones and was very sick. She had to spend the day at the clinic and we had to force feed her to get her back on track. She is doing well now but remains on prescription diet. I will indeed pray for your Schatzie and hope the vets can help her without any operations.

There were going to give her something for the pain but I wanted to wait as she seems able to sleep and has not cried in pain for a couple of days. I honestly suffer as well when I see any animal in pain and when is it one of your pets it is even worse.

Did the vet start your doggie on any antibiotics? I don't understand why a vet would keep her at the clinic all day just to dilate the eye. That should not affect the ulcer for good or for bad. I hope she gets the proper treatment and gets well soon.

Yes she was immediately put on antibiotic drops. My Vet kept her there as they were have trouble getting her pupil dilated enough for them to perform a deeper examination.

Oh, poor baby! How sad she looks in the picture. I hope she will be fine with only the medication given and she won't need a surgery. I'll keep her in my mind and hopefully she will soon be back to normal.

Hi whiteheather.... bless her little heart! It does look a bit painful, poor thing! Hope she gets better really soon! Animals don't deserve to go through such things. They really don't but unfortunetly they do but then again, the lucky ones have us to care for them. Hugs to the both of you!
