That'll Teach Me For Chasing The Moggy!

I do like to play with the cat from time to time, especially when I know that she's "in the mood" for doing so. Cats play when THEY want to play, right? Anyway, I was busy chasing her round the room and she decided she wasn't for coming out from behind the settee like she normally does. Usually she keeps me guessing which "end" she appears from but this time she didn't want to do that. "Mmmm, she must be in the middle somewhere, I'll put the light on to see where she's at." Lights on...PING! Lights OUT! Oh, F*CK, not again! Yes folks, in order to see where the moggy was I tripped the lights and had to get John out of bed to sort the switches..or whatever out, under the stairs. Yet another one of the 5 bulbs has blown as a consequence. Two out of the five are now defunct...again. "Gonna have to pick different bulbs John, I'm sick of them blowing out all the time." "Mmmm!" John replied, all bleary-eyed because he should be in bed. I really don't like these new-fangled bulbs. They're still the conventional shape but they certainly don't last 25 years or whatever they claim, more like 25 f*cking days! BRING BACK 100 WATT BULBS I SAY!

I put standard (but the best energy efficient ones I could find, at the time) lighting in my house when I built it in 2005. Fortunately, in the 5 or 6 years I've lived in the house, I have only had one recessed light burn out (that I can remember). I haven't replaced it because I have a lot of other recessed lighting in the great room. Because my great room ceiling is 15-feet tall, I'll wait until several bulbs blow before I borrow my neighbor's 12-foot ladder to replace bulbs. Oh, I did replace the bulbs in the kitchen (hanging lights) with curly bulbs, and I haven't had one of them blow...so...no problems here. I think I don't have a problem because the house is fairly new and I built a lot of stuff in for safety, environmental, etc.

Wow, I'd love to see your house. Do you have pics posted on your profile..or anywhere? Our ceilings are high and a pain in the rectum. I'd love to be able to take down the blinds and hideous curtains but I can't. It's so frustrating!

Well, if you come to NM next time you're in the States...stop by/stay. I have extra bedrooms. I'll try and post some pictures. I only have a zillion of them. I took pictures of every step of building this house.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I think the curly bulbs are "cute" but really!

We have a curly bulb in one of the bedrooms and by the time I've taken something out of the wardrobe the damn light has only just started to warm up. The ones we have elsewhere are the standard size but just as crappy. Haha!

I've had the long life bulbs in for many years - the one in the kitchen has been in for more than 15 years and the others probably as long. I have never had any problems with them, but I've not got the problems that you have with power surges, though the house is 60 years old, it's been rewired and it's got circuit breakers fitted that deal with any surges that might happen.

We have some box or other that an electrician friend installed for us. That has helped enormously as the electricity is safer now as a result. I reckon we should have a different kind of lighting altogether in the living-room as it's obvious the multi-arm ceiling lights aren't the answer..too many bulbs for a start!

I think that you need some new wiring. The new bulbs have a higher initial wattage (to get them lit) but a lower running wattage. It looks like the circuit in your house can't handle that initial surge. It might be as simple as a circuit breaker that needs replacing (they sometimes get a bit flaky toward the end). Is there anything else on the circuit with the lights? That might be overloading it.

I'm no expert on the electrics but I think you are probably right. Re-wiring would be the way to go. I wouldn't say the house is dangerous to live in or anything as an electrician we know put in some box or other (which is probably a circuit breaker, I'm not sure) but bulbs wouldn't blow at all with new wiring, I'm convinced of that! Too expensive to have it done though. It's a major job with old houses..re-wiring and it's ALWAYS at the bottom of people's lists!

LOL! Oh I am sorry for laughing at your misfortune. I do understand what you mean about these so called "energy efficient bulbs". They do not last the 25 years that they promise! I see that Moggy has beat you once again.... perhaps you need a new strategy for the cat!

Laugh away, it's OK, I can laugh now but I wasn't at the time lol. Chasing her up and down the stairs is the way to go I think. It'll keep us BOTH fit!

If I am in a error,a bulb can last 25 years, they somewhat talked big.You likes to play with the cat .seeing your vivid description ,I feel as if I saw you were out of breath. You still preserves traces of childishness.

I am childlike in some ways but it doesn't bother me. Doing silly things now and again keeps you young. The other day I was chatting to John and I so happened to be wearing his newly-ironed boxer shorts on my head. It made him laugh too, which is why I did it in the first place.

Our government is making us change to compact fluorescent bulbs. I like them, I have them, but I do not like them taking away the choice. I have some ceiling fans with lights that always burn one or two out ahead of time, regardless of where I get the bulbs. The wiring in old houses often causes this kind of trouble, it has surges or something. I really feel for you.

Recessed Halogen Spotlights - I'd Love Some Halogen Lighting!
I'd love some of those recessed halogen ceiling lights as Mum has some in her kitchen and bathroom. They are much brighter but they are energy-saving as I think they have to be now.

almost sounds like too high of bulb was in it..we had a chandelier doing that awhile. but yea,the standard bulbs are crap.i've had some good luck with the new ones, but not the lower wattage ones.and then some sconces don't fit the new ones at all..
