Government and The Church

I raised this topic because of the debates happening on the RH Bill and that the Catholic church is Opposed to the proposal. Now my question is that the Church really have to control the government? or should we say the Church and the State will go together? just like the Renaissance Period it is the church that run the government. In the Philippines it is always happening that whenever there are proposals then Catholic Church Opposed to it. So what is your opinion?

i think church and state would be much better off if it just continued to be separate. the moment you bring religion in you have to start pleasing all sides because all religions have a set of beliefs that can be different from one another. even with the church separate from state just about everyone can still agree on basic right and wrongs. the church doesn't have to be involved with state issues as morals still exist.

I totally Agree, the only thing the church can do is to teach their members a moral lesson, teach them correct principles to guide themselves in the right path.

We have a separation of church and state, so that very well explains it, but since Filipinos are religious people since the Spanish time, then Filipinos cant seem to grasp this, even the church itself cannot seem to understand and keeps on with whatever influence it has

Being predominantly Catholic nation we tend to believe that the church still has great influence over the government. Although it is stated in the Constitution the clear separation of the church and state, we can still see that there are times that the church meddles with government decision making policies. I believe that the catholic church should be vigilant up to the point of not meddling in when their stand is not followed. It is for their followers if they wold follow their faith or the government policies. I think the Government is doing their best to give the best services they can to the public and population control is just one policy they are adopting as a way to spread the services to as many as they can.

Of all the churches and religions in our country, it is only the catholic church that interferes with the government issues. The problem with them is they just keep on opposing and opposing and do not even offer a solution. The church should not in any way meddle with the government and they just have to mind their own business, to save souls.

I agree with you, maybe this is why Filipinos remain an impoverished nation because of the opposition from the church. instead of providing the state a solution they become part of the problem.

They should already stop manipulating the people. And open their eyes to what's really happening in reality. The Filipinos are already engulfed and suffocated by poverty!

there will always be separation of church and state. what the church is doing right now is not meddling on the affairs of the state rather it only caters on the welfare of the people. specially when faith and morals is the main concern.

Hi lauram, I personally feel that religion and politics donot mix and history has paid with the blood of humans when they did mix. How many people have been killed in name of God and religion , no one can tell but it is safe to assume religion have killed more people than WW2. So no church or any other religious body shouldnot have control on govt.,

Well, the principle of separation of Church and State has been widely debated and at times misunderstood by a lot. Yes, the Church cannot interfere with the laws passed by the State but it has a right, as does any individual, to question the actions of the State. The Church basically is a group of individuals similar to NGOs and cause-oriented groups. They could lobby and block the passing of legislation or support it. This is the essence of democracy. It just so happens that the Church is a very influential and organized representation of the people.

The separation of church and state holds. The church does not meddle with constitution and the implementation of its laws. The state does not meddle with the canon law and does not arrest priests who preach homilies in the pulpits, even if what the priests are saying are against state matters. The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic nation. Where the welfare of the people leads to, the shepherds of this strong church follow. The bishops do not meddle with the affairs of the state, but you would hear from them talk endlessly where morals and civility are concerned.
