Taking hold of unemployment ?

I was reading an article the other day that stated if every household in the United States spent $65.00 a year on American made products, it would create more than enough jobs and would crush unemployment. My question would be this, where can the average US citizen go shopping and find American made products without going online? I walked around wal mart one day and about the only thing I found there that said 'made in the USA' was an Anchor Hocking measuring cup. I went to other stores just checking and looking at where things were made, same thing, hard to find.

It is extreamly difficult sometimes to find things made in your own country i live in Canada and frequently look to see if i can get products that are made here but usually not although most of my fruits and vegtabls i get are grown locally which is usually the best i can do

I know what you mean, we have stores here that buy fruits & veggies off of local farmers, I buy what I can when it's in season from the local farmers here. I buy fresh eggs & meat off of the farmers, too. It all seems to have such a better taste than what I get at the stores here.

Seems importing and exporting is on the rise and not helping the economy either. You are right I too have taken note to that, the manufacturers also need to lend a hand with this also.

i bet the same could be said here in canada too. sad thing is, lots of our companies are going state side. looking for your country made products would stop you from going to the dollar store (where most of their stuff comes from China) however, i do look for Canadian made products but like you said, its not that easy.

Thinking about it, I can't say that I have actually seen any products here in the states that have been made in Canada, either. I know a few years back I worked for a company that had their corporate offices in Canada, last year they closed down for good after 5 or 6 years of dwindling products & laid off employees. I only assumed that they moved back to Canada, but after many factories here moving out of the country, maybe I could assume they just moved to Mexico or China....Sad...so Sad!

Unemployment has become a big problem in many developed countries as they have become too comfortable in their own backyards that they refused to think of the fate of the increasing population of their country. Where will the thousands of graduates coming out from universities every year work if they rely on other nations to manufacture and buy all imported goods. It is really a pathetic sight to see graduates who spend years studying in universities only to find themselves unemployed upon graduation. The economic stability of a nation and welfare of her citizens depends very much on the intellectual brain of its leader. I am from a developing country but we stand proud to find goods made locally and our leaders are always encouraging us to buy local made products.

you have a lot of very good points! It is very frustrating to see graduates looking for jobs after all their years of college, I know a few people that are not working at the job they studied for. It sounds like your leaders are making great progress just encouraging their citizens to buy local products and I think that's the way it should be!

I think that all traditional western manufacturing countries face the same problem. We have gone from mass production to niche luxury products but can no longer compete on day to day basics. The UK where I live even imports milk! We are a dairy country for goodness sake. We only have ourselves to blame though. We expect high wages compared to China and Asia and have outpriced ourselves. There are signs of wage unrest in China now. Workers there want to emulate the high standard of living that we have had. But that comes at a price. If they are paid more then commodity costs will increase and manufacturers will start to look for cheaper markets. Maybe some items could return to the US but many will wander round the Pacific Rim until they settle elsewhere. The absence of export sales and the national deficit will serve to keep our countries depressed economically for years to come. We need to wake up, swallow our pride and start competing again.

I learn something new every day!! I didn't know that the UK imports milk, that's as crazy as people in the US buying pork from Thailand. Don't make much sense to me when you have plenty of cows & we have plenty of pigs. Makes me crazy here, too when I walk into a grocery store and see that most of the fish is imported from farms in other countries where the fish are fed steroids & antibiotics and we have perfectly good fish here.

It's the same all over the world, unfortunately. Wouldn't it be great if governments were only allowed to import a certain perentage of goods w.r.t the overall GDP of a country?

Yeah, I think that's where a line should be drawn for the good of ones own country.

hi mzz I have done that to and Walmart rarely seems to have anything made here and their clothes for women are all from overseas. I would love to shop American if I could find American made products in our main stores. whats with this thing of buying crap from overseas. I bought some candy, ate two pieces and my mouth was burned, I mean like I had dran too hot coffee with the skin peeling. I looked to see where a bo ut in the US it had come from and no it came from China. I threw the rest away as it contained something toxic.I listened to Good Morning America and Dianne Sawyer and decided to buy American bu t where must we go to buy things and why is shoppiong American so expensive. why not lower prices make more products and put us Americans back to work. well not me I am 85 and retired plus I am physically handicapped. lol lol.

It's odd to me, 20 years ago, I lived in NC and the wal mart down there had clothes, shower curtains, plastics, all kinds of things that were made in the USA. Before I moved back to Ohio the clothing factory down there closed, the shower curtain factory in Ohio closed down and by the time wal mart got up here in Ohio, all the things that I loved about wal mart was gone. I have found something that I own, bought at wal mart, and am proud to say was made in the USA besides Anchor Hocking Sterilite! Home Office – Townsend, MA Townsend, MA – Plant Birmingham, AL – Plant Lake Havasu City, AZ – Plant Massillon, OH – Plant Clinton, SC – Plant Ennis, TX – Plant They make all kinds of useful stuff!!
