How long does it take you to make a decision?

Life is a way to the unknown. Are you afraid? - A person walking through the dark

Some people have the ability to make a decision on almost every aspect of their lives in just a few seconds. I always ask myself: how do they do it? I can't do this when we are talking about important decitions. It's not that it takes me hours to think where to go to eat but if I have to do something new I generally ask myself which are the pros and cons of this new decision. If someone propose me to work on something new or to do something different I prefer to take a time to think. I can't take a decision for something that is important for me in just a few seconds. And how about you guys? Can you make an important decision in just a few seconds or do you prefer to wait and think for a while when you are not sure about what to do before making your final decision. ALVARO

Since I was about 8 , I have known what I can and can not do. Or should I say what I Will do and what I Will not. so it may seem rather quick but in reality, whatever is asked either falls into one of three categories, a definite yes, a definite no , or a maybe. It is only with maybe that it will take me some time to answer. But even then , it may be a quicker response.

Hi sarah ruth beth: Thanks for this advise. I like this idea of the three categories. In the case of the questions where the answer is "maybe" what did you do to take a fast decision? Thanks for your answer. ALVARO

For me it is not a matter of being afraid, more like juggling the pros and cons, so depending on what type of decision it is I may procrastinate a bit to make sure that decision is ideal. I do not live with any form of regrets so I do try to weigh out everything before I decide. Thus far my way for me works well and if it is the wrong decision, I at least feel comfortable that it was me who decided and not influenced by pressure, especially if it is an important decision. This way I learn for next time.

Hi hard working gurl: I agree with you. Have you noticed how some persons try to force you to take a decition now. But it's not a good idea, at least for me to decide something without thinking about what I really want to do and how I see the things. I prefer to make people waiting but to be sure that I have made what I considered that it was the best decision I could take. ALVARO

Hi starsailover, and also to Fazel. In decision-making, you need to decide one thing up-front: Is time of the essence? Granted, given the luxury of time in the world, I can take all day or all year, but by then, the answer might not have mattered. A life could be lost, a job could be retrenched, etc. etc. If time is of essence, then decide what is the best by weighing what hurts least. It's easy to go for what benefits most, but that might also result in what hurts most. For example, when pressed by a salesperson to make a quick sale, the one that hurts leasts is NOT to buy otherwise your pocket hurts. For those that need not be time-critical, take your time. Seek counsel from others, like friends in the real world or in myLot, just like what you are doing now. We all make wrong decisions in life sometime, make that many times. Just learn from it if we survive through it...and move on, move on.

Its hard to decide, especially if you know that it may or can change your life, even a little or drastically. For me, decisions may take a few days to a few weeks even... with in between hopes to not see another day just so you can stay away from the decision that you have to make... not knowing if it will do you good or not.

Hi chiyosan: It's great that you can take so much time to take these big decisions. In my case, it's sometimes difficult, specially in my work but I try to manage both things: making a decision fast but taking a time for me (some minutes or hours if possible) to carefully think about what to do. Hi startsailover, it mostly depends on what the situation is then. If it's just little matter I don't take much time to make a decision. I will do it at once without any hesitation But sometimes I have to choose between decisions which is more important or significant impact. This usually will take me quite some time to weigh up the gains and loses before making a wise decision finally. Whenever I come across such cases I will never make any decision in a rush like in a few seconds or minutes time, for I realize that making decision without thinking deeply will affect my later living unavoidable surely Happy posting

Hi Ikbooi: that's what I think about this subject too. The only problem is when you feel that you can take all the time that you need to make an important decision. That's a tension moment for me because I don't like this kind of pressure. However we have to face this situation and try to think about the subject as quick as possible and take the wisest decision we can. ALVARO

For me it really depends on the kind of decision that I need to make at the given time. There are a lot of decisions that I'm able to make within a split second. However, there are also a lot of decisions that I really have to think on before I'm able to make the final decision. For example, I'm able to make split decisions when I'm doing the grocery shopping. However, when it comes to a major purchase, that is typically something that I need to think about for a while.

Hi dorann m win: I think it's ok to take the time you think you need to make the good decisions when you feel that it's not a simple one. The only problem is when someone is forcing you to take a decision as quickly as possible. ALVARO

I take a long time to make a decision because I want to be careful to make a decision that will upset people who come to me for direction. Even if I do make a good decision it must be the one that help the person or must be good for myself, or the orgnaization I represent and the person concerned.

Hi jak: Same happends to me. I don't like to take a decision when I am not sure about what to do, specially if we are talking about something big or about takin a decision on a subject that I don't really know what to do or when I don't know which will be the consequences of my actions. ALVARO

Hi Starsailor, If I am unsure about something I will sleep on it and then make a decision. I believe making a decision is better than not even if in hindsight it was the wrong decision it was made for the right reasons at the time if that makes sense so I will learn from wrong ones. HI ellie: Thanks for your answer. That's actually a technique that I usually use in my personal life. Sometimes we are too stressed, so going to bed is a good help to put everything in order in your mind and the next day you feel better to decide what you really want to do. ALVARO

It depends on the situation for me, but more often than not, If have found that if I follow my first instinct when I make a decision, it is normally the best one. I try not to second guess myself because I have found that when I do, I tend to talk myself out of my gut instinct decision and the outcome isn't what I thought it would be. In my opinion, if my gut insticts are telling me to make a certain decision, there is a reason for it, and it is probably the best one for me.

Hi lyneemg: That's cool. In my case I can't do this because I don't trust too much on this sticnts. I prefer to take a rational decision, evaluate different possibilities, etc. And that's something that we can't do so quickly. ALVARO

Small matters doesn't require a lot of thought or deliberation on mt part. But for important decisions which have a deep implication on our life i think over in detail.I'll consult people wiser and more intelligent than me before arriving at a decision when the decision is a serious one.Routine matters require quick decision making but not matters which have deeper ramifications in our life.

This would have to depend on what kind of decision i am making. If it is for something frivolous it usually doesn;t take me too long at all to make a decision. If it is a question of future or family, i do take more time in the decision making process. i wont let someone make my decisions for me.

Hi katie: I think the same. That's the reason why I take my time to make a decision: because I want to be totally sure about what I want to do. And I'll assume the consequences of my decision no matter if they are good or bad. ALVARO

It depends on how big the matter is. If its a major decision it might take more time to deliberate on and if its a minor decision it maybe simpler to get an answer. i definitely outweigh the pros and cons and I tell people thats what I have to do sometimes before I give them an final answer. Hey sometimes deciding what to eat is a hard decision for me because there aren't many options and if there is then I don't want it like I do when I'm very hungry sitting at home watch Hardee's commercials .I think the best thing to do is wait and think for a while when you are not sure about what to do before making a final decision.

Hi danas: I agree with you. In fact when a decision is important for me, people should wait for me until I find what I want to do. I don't like to take a decision when I am not sure if that's the best for me. ALVARO

Sometimes there are things that are very difficult to handle. WE have to give utmost time to think and consider a lot of aspects before we make any decisions. but there are also situations that are very easy to solve. For me, decisions may depend on situations, it could be simple or sometimes complicated.

Hi donski: I agree with that division. The problem for it's when I have to take an important decision. I feel sorry but I can't do this in just a few seconds. I don't like it and I prefer to be alone and deeply think about this. ALVARO

It takes me a lot of time when I decide when the topic is really serious. I always think first and consider my skill and knowledge. I also check about the topic if it is safe for me to go or not. There are also times when my curiousity strikes and I just go for it in less than 2 minutes. There are advantage and disadvantage ofcourse but the good thing is that I learn from mistakes. My boyfriend also told me not to make any decisions either my mood is happy or mad. Always decide when I am in my thinking or normal state and to always take my time.

Hi mogul cherubim: I think that your boyfriend is right. When we usually take a decision on these states of mind we decide to do some things that in a normal situation we wouldn't do or at least we'd think about them a lot before knowing what to do. Thanks for your answer. ALVARO

Honestly I can never make a decision faster than 7 minutes. I'm always scared to make a decision, I always think "Oh what if I make the wrong choice," even simple decisions like choosing what to eat for dinner get me thinking. I would just enjoy someone else making my decision for me.

Hi gatror gurlm: I am not sure about how much time that it takes for me to make a decision but I think it's almost the same. I don't like to decide just by using the first thought that came to my mind. In fact I think that's the way I commit the more number of mistakes. ALVARO

For me decisions are not always something to be think twice, trice, or tenth times. Its good to think first before you decide but there are times that an urgent decision must be made and whether you think it or not, you end up with the same consequences.. For me weighing consequences is a wise man act before deciding to any matters.. ^_^

As for me there are some decision I can quickly make. However, there are some that requires a lot of consultation with relations, expert, professional etc. In this case, I have to give some time to enable me consult with persons around me that seems to know better than me.

Hi naija real: I agree with you. We can't take all our decisions as fast as for example deciding what to wear or how to do our work. When decisions are more complex or have results that we are not sure about them it's better to think more than once before making a decision. ALVARO

Hey star, I have always been the one to make quick decisions. I am a type of math person, I make a decision immediately because it is the right thing to do. If course, I have made plenty of mistakes in my life, who's to say they haven't? However, I try to not be quick to judge, but be quick to answering a question, moving in life, and just moving through life itself. It's my way of life.

Hi Michael Nil: That's simply awesome I think. I can't do this and I have had problems sometimes when people try to pressure me to take a decision fast. How do you do this. I feel interested. ALVARO
11 Mar 11
I think that people who can make important decisions that fast are not thinking it through properly. I completely agree with you in the thought process that you use when making important decisions. Myself personally I don't trust my own decisions anymore so after I've weighed out the pros and cons and took some time to think, I usually make the decision with the advice of someone else, as the medication that I take effects my judgement nowadays. Hi Fazel: That's right. The question is what's more important for us? To make a fast decision or to make a good decision. I think we all know the answer. Asking someone that you trust for and avise is also a good way to find what's the best for you. ALVARO
