Middle East Nations clamoring for Democracy, did you think we'd ever see such a thing?

It is rather interesting of course but whether these groups of people - who are involved in the fighting - will succeed in their aims is a different matter. Many of those who are protesting and fighing have never actually known democracy as those of us who live in a democratic country know it to be. I can only wonder if what they want is really a change from/of the dictator (or dictatorship) that they know or whether they actually want to live in a democratic society. Do they know what they want is or do they have an idealised view of a democracy? There is a vast difference in the two situations. Look at the evidence of other countries which were previously dictatorships or even under communist rule for so long - and these countries are now "free". As the people discovered, it was not easy and many of those countries still have not made the adjustment. I do not blame the citizens of these countries wanting their freedom or to be able to live and make their own decisions, but it does seem that the cost will be very high - and possibly much higher than they realise. I do wish these people all the best but have some reservations in respect of the cost to the people - with lost lives as well as serious injuries. In addition there is the massive damage done to infrastructure which will need to be repaired and/or replaced. If he dictators can be/are deposed, is there anyone who is capable of leading the country That is someone who can show leadership, make the hard decisions but at the same time ensure that the cunhtry will be ruled fairly for all the citizens. I sincerely hope they are successful in their aim/hope/desire for freedom but am also concerned that they might be changing from one dictator to another.

It really is not that surprising. As more and more information is available at your finger tips, you get to see how others live. I would want democracy too.

I don't know if we will or not. As I understand it, the dominant religion in the Middle East is Islam and democracy does not mesh well with it--the religion demands obedience and respect of authority and also dictates behavior, dress, and other things that are at odds with democracy. I do hope they attain some fairer sort of government other than dictatorships. Actually, democracy is mob rule. What we have in America is a democratic republic where we are represented by elected officials. It's imperfect and has turned against us but it's better than mob (majority) rule, or so they say.

it seems to me that through the ages, countries have been wanting their independence from dictatorship. so its no surprise when they do. this is a repeat of history so i dont know what you mean its nothing new.
