What is blasphemy to you in your religion? Do you think it should be punished and if so how should it be punished? Should the blasphemer be subject to civil law or is blasphemy something that should be only the concern of a religion?

The christians of today have no corporal punishments for any of the religious tenets. Neither do the Jews...Not even the Ultra-Orthodox. There is only the Spiritual Punishments in the next world if there is one that they must contend with. It is only those who cling to the ancient beliefs that were tied to the pagans who still go by the cruel and often tortuous punishments. The two major religions who once were so tied, Judaism and christianity have managed to break those ties with paganism and progress into modern times. They no longer need the tortuous and cruel punishments to keep order within their religions. Their people follow moral laws because they know that it is good and right to do so with out the need for fear.

Adoniah "In Christianity, just using the name of the lord was a sin." Not in mainstream Christianity, thinks I. I understood this was a sin in Judaism, at least in the past? all the best urban

What are you saying Adoniah? Do you really say that Leviticus 24:16 is ancient beliefs that were tied to the pagans?

Blasphemy was the major sin that was punished in the major religions. Since there is no punishment now there is no sin...Right? In Christianity, just using the name of the lord was a sin. In some places, it is still considered so. There is still no punishment. The Amish may shun you, but they do not kill you. In Judaism, it is a grave sin to make a false promise in the Name of the Lord. They will not kill you for it. There are sins that you can get excommunicated for. But not that. That is between you and your Lord.

I understand blasphemy to be a disrespectful or abusive attitude or speech against that which is holy. In Christianity blasphemy is forgiveable except blasphemy against the holy spirit, which I understand to mean denying Christ's divinity all the best urban

You left the question of punishment unanswered? Since I am not a Christian should I be punished since I do not accept the divinity of Christ. Can a person who is not a follower of a religion be guilty of blasphemy in that religion?

What are you say Exactly dear Urban? I can say you misunderstood it when you say that blasphemy against the holy spirit means denying Christ's divinity simply because Matthew 12:32 is obvious and clear And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. the verse clearly differentiate between the son of man (Jesus) and the Holy spirit, thus you can't say that blasphemy against the holy spirit means denying Christ's divinity. and yes, You left the question of punishment unanswered, because the verse say it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. You see, something is not forgiven in this world, What does this mean?

Blasphemy against God is indeed a sin, it is punished by the hellfire in the hereafter, but it is not anyone's business if you got punished or you get forgiveness it is all between you and God, but if your being blasphemous against God lead to other actions (i.e fighting others for their religion) this is something different, but no punishment in this world for being blasphemous against God, only if you committed anything wrong. since you don't harm anyone there is no problem, it is All left to God if He doesn't guide you to his way it is not anyone's business. [005:105] O ye who believe! Ye have charge of your own souls. He who erreth cannot injure you if ye are rightly guided. Unto Allah ye will all return; and then He will inform you of what ye used to do.

Blasphemy is just religion's way of trying to control. Let's really look at what God does. God allows total freedom of speech. After all, God could surely take the speak from anyone He chooses. God will not do this. Why can't mankind allow freedom of speech just like God does?? Maybe in time, mankind will learn the wisdom in this. Though freedom of speech can carry a sharp tongue for some. It also allows the buried problems to come to the surface so they can be dealt with. Stop the hate. Stop the control. If we only follow God's example, great wisdom and a wonderful world would appear before our eyes. Let's start today.
