Your best bet may be pre-paid card(s) or the pay-as-you-go rechargeable style. Not only does this ensure you don't ever go over a limit (since you're paying up-front) but I'm told that some are considered like small loans for credit purposes. They may cost you a few pounds to use (usually a one-off setup fee or something) but when they run out after a year or so, it counts as a loan you've repaid. Thus, your credit rating gets better. You'd need to check this: I haven't looked into it myself but know someone who was rebuilding his rating this way. Slowly.

Well, I used to have Capital Connect card, which was okay. After that I switched to a Debit Card thru my bank. There's a few in the UK - try googling "credit cards for students" cos they have no credit rating at all - but they manage to get plastic spending money!
