Personal Hygiene: A Serious Matter - Or Is It?

United States
May 15, 2011 5:13am CST
I was talking with a friend yesterday, and I said a phrase that I have used and heard used many times before "I am going to go jump into the shower". Then I thought for a minute about what I had just said, and really it sounded quite dangerous, so I decided to rephrase my statement. There will be no jumping into or out of the shower. In fact, there will be no jumping in the bathtub whatsoever. I am merely going to gingerly step into and out of the shower while maintaining perfect balance and poise (or at least that is my story and I'm sticking to it). So, do you throw caution to the wind and jump in the shower or do you take the more tried-and-true approach of stepping and trying not to injure yourself? Do you do synchronized swimming while taking a bath? Are there any other seemingly harmless personal hygiene rituals that you have that when you think about it really could be quite dangerous?

hi purplealabaster oh for me taking a shower is scary as a diabetic my sense of balance is not so hot. In the last six years I have had two falls both were horrible first one I landed on my left shoulder on concrete sidewalk by my favorite restaurant resulting in a smashed left shoulder, I had to have shoulder joint replacement with the results that now my left arm has only 25 percent of its normal usage. then on the 15th of February I had the second bad fall. broke my nose, blacked my eyes and ruined my right knee.So now I cling to the safety bars in my shower and pray on God do not let me fall. I get my hair nicely shampooed and have my wonderfully refreshing shower and get out before I slip in the tub and smash anything. So I never jump in the shower I move slowly in to and out of the shower aware of maintaining complete balance.I also thank the powers that be for helping me maintain my balance.

Oh Hatley, I am so sorry to hear that you were so badly hurt! *HUGE HUGS* I hope that you are doing better now! I know that slipping and falling in the bathtub or shower can be a very serious thing. My sister had to use a chair when she was in the shower, because she couldn't stand for that long without falling. Have you tried a shower chair? I am not sure where you get them (and I can't really ask my sister any more), but I think that she got hers from the doctor or hospital due to her medical condition. Maybe they could give you one as well. With the chair and a detachable showerhead, you can reach all the "necessary areas" that you need to clean without worrying about falling.

Hello Mrs Hatley I remember your fall in February and am also grateful that you did not get more seriously hurt. The safety guard rails sound like a blessing because we need our Mrs. Hatley safe at all times. I was pleased to read yesterday that you did well with your walker during your shopping trip. Sounds like you have gotten stronger by the day. Hooray!

I haven't jumped anywhere in a long time.I don't have a bath so that would be out of the question. I do have and love my shower. I don't jump there as it is dangerously small and I daren't think what injuries I could cause if I jumped I can't swim so not have a bath is not a problem for that either My personal hygiene rituals are, I presume, the same as those of others, though I use one towel for eveything after a shower as I am clean absolutley all over

Hi. purplealabaster. When I tell someone that I am going to go and jump in the shower, I mean that I am going to take me a shower, without jumping and hurting myself at all. Many people that say this, usually plan to take a quick shower. I am assuming that they are just not going to jump into the shower so fast and injure themselves. But I can see where you are coming from though. Profusely jumping into the shower is very dangerous if it is actually done.

I do think that most times when the saying is used it is meant to describe a quick shower rather than an actual description of how they are going to enter and exit the shower. I just thought it was funny when I got the mental image of it, and I was in a silly mood, so I decided to start a discussion about it. I did not mean to imply, though, that falling in the shower was anything other than a serious event, because many people do get seriously injured that way.

Long time no c? Why would anyone even think that a bath would be unhygienic as the very purpose of a bath is to clean up. Anyway I never use a bath tub. Some how never like the idea. Even during holidays I will manage a bath standing in the bath tub as the very thought that some stranger has used it before me puts me off Every time I have a bath I think of my mother who when I was a kid used to remind me about all the crevices and nooks and corners that required scrubbing! I follow those instructions even now to the 'T' No. I do not have any rituals that need to be looked at for any possible dangers lurking in there. And by the way I have a separate towel to wipe my feet.

We humans are odd are we not? Why, after we have bayhed or showered and are suposedòy clean allo ver, do we then use a different towel for our feet? Why only for our feet, if we are clean, andnot also for our erm.. rear ends?

Guilty as charged! I am one to jump in and out of the shower, especially during the winters! It gets so cold here that as soon as it is time for my shower, I race into the cold bathroom turn on the hot water and jump right in! I do take a while there as I wash my very long hair daily, and well also like to wash all neat areas, shave me legs and armpits as well. Once I feel I am done showering, I immediately jump out into a warm towel. Sorry but I am a jumper and lets say some day my jumping days will be over. But for now during the summer I too jump in and out several times a day, because it get so very humid and hot here. So am I like a champion jumper? I will have you know I ran track and field hurdles both in high school and college so I am very well known for my hurdle and jumping ways.

I strongly identify with the multiple showers on hot and humid days. I also wash my hair often. The humidity where you live tends to make my hair expand. It expands here during the summer. In fact, even though it is not hot here right now, I woke up wondering what had happened to my hair, then I remembered that I had skipped the conditioner. My hair waved and curled and expanded all over the place during the night. I never understood people who went swimming but did not get their hair wet.

LOL! Perhaps environmental groups (not to mention car companies) should forget alternatives to petroleum, such as electricity, and focus on "natural gas" instead, which seems to be in abundance, especially with some people!

I don't know why the phrase came to be or how but I use it too although it's not exactly what I do. lol I gingerly step into the shower so I won't slip and fall for it can be very slippery. We do have a tub but it's a whirlpool type and we have a walk in shower which is what we use most. Nope, nothing dangerous unless one were to leave the soap on the floor....

We all have fears, some sound strange to some people and some don't but their fears that belong to each one of us regardless how strange or not so strange they are. We had our shower overflo on us one time but that was about 10 years ago and it was because our septic tank which was made of fiberglass, had collapsed and backed up the pipes which over flowed our toilets, tubs and walk in shower. It was one heck of a mess but the insurance company helped get it all cleaned up even though we had to pay for a new CONCRETE septic tank.

Oh, soap on the floor can be very dangerous in more than one way ... This is probably going to sound crazy, but the walk-in type showers scare me a little. What I mean by that is I am very careful to clean the tub after a shower and make sure that any hair is removed from the drain, but not all members of my family are as thoughtful. If one were to forget to remove the hair and therefore had a water back-up, then I would be afraid that the whole bathroom would flood before I could do anything about it.

Oh that must have been awful! It is good that the insurance company helped you out with it, though. I know that is what insurance companies are supposed to do, but I have had some dealings with insurance companies that didn't want to pay for things that (in my opinion) should be covered, so now I don't take it for granted that they will help when they are needed, even if you have the coverage.

Jumping is definitely good, but there is always a time and place for everything. I would be a little afraid to jump like that in the shower, though, unless the walls were padded, there were sticky pads on the bottom of the tub so there wouldn't be any accidental slipping ... you know, precautions and all. And what exactly were you doing in the bath that was tricky, my dear Saphy? Did you at least remember to use the waterproof handcuffs to avoid rusting?

PA sweetie, try the shower, just make sure all the soaps and what have you are not there at all. Could be a bit tricky. What i did in the bath will surely make you faint. Try that one, leave the padding, it's in the way. As for the handcuffs, both of you. It was made JUST for me.

Jumping in a shower can be very dangerous, especially if you slip, grasp the tap and create an inundation. It is more dangerous during the weekend, because plumbers don't work. I had a small dog with a dangerous hygiene ritual : he was jumping in my bath. Personally, I jump only in swimming pools and I avoid to do it from a 10m diving board : I learned when I was a kid that it can hurt, even with a favorable wind.

I think that if we are going to do any showering, especially if it might involve jumping, then we should have someone there to supervise and assist just in case something goes wrong ... or right as the case may be. I do like jumping into swimming pools. I like diving into them as well, but you have to be really careful if you are diving into the shallow end or that could be even worse than jumping in the shower.

yes, jumping into the shower is dangerous but i think not stepping into the shower for a few days or more is dangerous, not to you personally but to the one who will sit or sleep beside you. Poor guy will have to endure a very hard ordeal af sniffing a week old unwashed hair.

LOL! You do have a very good point. I supposed that just spraying on the perfume would not work very well either, huh? I guess that it is a good thing that my petals give off a natural and lovely aroma otherwise it would be even worse. It is possible to wash up and get clean without being in the shower or bath, but that just is not as much fun. Besides, a little bit of danger makes things interesting, right?

Before i take a shower, i do the necessary sleuthing of how the water is. If the water is cold and since the shower has no heater , i would gather a paleful of the cold water , then heat a big pan of water , to temper the coldness of the water in the pail. But when the weather is hot and the water in the shower is not that cold, i would straightly take a bath in the shower. I like to take a bath everyday specially in the morning before i go to the office. I would heat a pan of water just so that i could temper the cold water, vene if the weather is cold.

I would really hate it if my shower did not have a heater. I really enjoy relaxing under the shower with the hot water running on me - it is almost like a massage. If I had to take a quick shower with luke-warm water, then it would definitely not be as enjoyable ... unless it was summer, and then (like you) I enjoy just getting into the shower and letting the water cool me as I get clean.

I think that most of the time, whatever brings the child out in us is a good thing. I mean, some people do take it a bit far, in my opinion, but for the most part I think that many adults could use a bit of fun and relaxation and not taking life too seriously, because when you are too serious it is very difficult to really enjoy all that life has to offer. On the other hand, if you are in the hospital recovering from broken bones due to being too "child-like", then it is also very difficult to enjoy all that life has to offer.

Hi Purp...where've ya been kiddo???? Everything I do, every move I make, every step I take is fraught with danger these days. It hurts to move. It even hurts to just sit. It's cold at the moment and even though I have a coat and slippers on my feet and hands are freezing. I have the fire going. I'm too heavy for my bones so I've become doddery and my joints are all under duress. I never take a bath these days as I cannot get in and out. I have the same problem with my car so have to endure the severe aches and sometimes pain in the doing. Having a shower is tricky because of a possible high blood pressure episode and subsequent dizzy spell but these are quite infrequent now that I'm on medication . Darling, getting older is not for sissies...

That is awful. I am so sorry that you are in so much pain right now. I know that getting old is not for sissies, but it definitely beats the alternative. I was having some fun and being silly with this discussion, but I also know that slipping and falling in the shower or tub is a very serious matter. My dad had a fall last year (or was it two years ago now), and he still is having problems. He was in a hotel shower, and they did not have the proper safety equipment, which I thought was a law (or regulation or whatever), and he slipped and automatically tried to grab the railing (which they have in the shower at home), but it obviously wasn't there. He landed half over the side of the tub, bruised his ribs and tore his rotator cuff. He had to go to the Emergency Room and everything. Please be careful in the shower, Ms.Tickle, as I would not want you to get hurt! Have you tried a shower chair? My sister had one, and she loved it, because she didn't have to worry about falling while trying to get all those "hard to reach" places.

Yes, the rotator cuff injury is nasty. They could do surgery, but he doesn't want to go through that at his age, so they did physical therapy and he has to be careful not to strain it too much. I am glad to hear that you have a shower stool. They are really good and make showering much safer. I would not want anything to happen to you, and you live alone, so that is even more dangerous if you were to slip and fall.

It's obvious that hygiene is definitely that important in each one of us. Without it the word "clean" wouldn't have to exist. Yet this sense of things being clean or the either way around, creates a somehow biased opinion about a person's hygiene based from his or her skin color. In Asian countries, people who are fair are somehow given a general notion that they do take care of themselves better than the darker skinned ones. :)

It is sad that people judge other people based on their skin tones. I do not think that dark skinned people are any more or less clean than lighter skinned people. I do know that hygiene in general is viewed differently in different cultures or parts of the world, but that is a cultural or regional thing rather than a matter of skin color. For example, here in the United States it is viewed as hygienic for women to shave their armpits and legs, but in other cultures this is not so. Really, I do not think it is any more or less hygienic as men do not shave and are not considered dirty for not shaving, but it is a cultural thing.

I actually thought of this discussion when my youngest was jumping in the shower. I told her not to do it, because it was really dangerous. She said something like "but you said we were going to go jump in the shower". I had to explain all the reasons why it was dangerous and how it was just an expression.
