Interruptions while reading

I like to sit at the Starbucks and read. There aren't all the distractions that there are at home. No TV, no computer, no pets... And mostly everyone else leavesD me alone. But every once in a while someone will come along and interrupt me. They want to know what I'm reading (and if I tell you, are you going to know any more than you did before?), if it's a good book (this always comes when I'm five pages in or five pages from the end.... five pages from the end, I think, no, it's terrible, I just had to keep reading thinking maybe it would get better.) or make some kind of other idle chit chat. How do you deal with interruptions while you're reading?

Me too. I find it very annoying if there's something or someone disturbs me. I can actually read and listen to music at the same time. It's weird I know, but it helps me more to find my concentration in reading without disturbing me because I can hear only the music when my imaginations works when reading a novel.

I totally agree. I'm a light sleeper and this is what I do when I take a nap or take a timed sleep. lol The music in the background resists all the worldly noises there are.

Exactly, with the music playing all the little noises that would normally be distracting (neighbors outside, car doors slamming, pets making noise) are drowned out. :)

I hate being interrupted when I'm reading. And, for some reason, it seems everyone thinks seeing me with a book is an invitation to start a conversation. I'd like to say something like,"Hello. Can you see the book in my hands? It's not just for decoration. I was reading it." But, I don't like to be rude, so I participate in the conversation until they leave or finally wise up and realize they were stopping me from what I was doing.

I understand completely because as soon as you tell them what you are reading then they are going to want to know what happens in the book and is it any good. I usually try and go somewhere where there are less people to interrupt me. You could go to a park during a time when you think there arent a lot of people. Otherwise you just have to deal with people interrupting you. Its strange how some people will just walk up to you when they see that you are reading and ask you a question. That is disrespectful. Hope you figure it out.

I'm not very fond of strangers interrupting me and asking what I'm reading either. I guess I might understand someone wanting to chat, but usually it's a creepy guy hitting on me at the train station who's asking the question. I usually answer by showing the book cover (Hey look! Books have their titles RIGHT ON THE COVER! Where you can see them!) and answering that I like the book (I hate the question, 'is it any good?' because it's subjective who likes what. I might love a book and you could hate it.) or that I'm only so many pages in and I haven't made up my mind on whether I like it or not. After that I try to act absorbed and hope they go away (it usually doesn't work). If they're a fellow book-lover than it doesn't bother me, I'd love to chat with them! But like I said... it's usually not.

It's realy very irritated when get interrupt during the reading . When I was at school,I like reading in the classroom, there's not many interruptions,so i can concetrate myself on the books. A good book will make me want to finish it at once, but if I am interropted sveral times, I may not have the emtion to read. Nest time you want to read without interruptions, just ingore everyone else, just reding.

I really hate it when someone interrupts me when I am very focused in reading a book. Maybe if I was reading newspaper or little articles in magazines I can tolerate but when I am on a book - I really hate it. Very annoying and you have to start from the previous page just to get back at where you've started. Just like last night, I was reading on Paulo Coelho's Like a Flowing River and then my friend just bug me because she wants me to watch something on television. Great discussion, ladybug. Brings all book lovers.

My husband is extremely talkative and he always interrupts me when I am reading. My reaction depends on my mood, sometimes I find it very annoying and ask him to stop and sometimes I just accept his interuptions and try to concentrate on my book anyway. If he interrupts me over and over I am not able to read more than one or two sentences at a time, and I often have go do back to read some of the sentences again. When I read at a public place like a coffeeshop people sometimes ask me what I am reading, but most of the time they just let me read without interrupting me.

I never read the end before. I would lose the interest on keeping reading. I love to read. I almost forget what is to sit in a quite place to do it since a had my kid. Sometimes I miss to lay in my bed and read for hours. That sensation when you are reading a good book and you can't wait to see what is going to happen.

I admire your concentration. I couldn't concentrate on reading at Starbucks. I like quiet when I read. If I were interrupted I'd be PO'd..lol, that's probably why I don't read in public places :)

I don't really need quiet when reading and interruptions don't really bother me. But for you, when someone asks what you are reading, answer them without even looking up from your book. If you don't make eye contact you pretty much sending the message that you don't feel like socializing.

I'm always bring my ipod and pluck my ear with earphone and I think it is works because they'll not try to talk to me because i'm reading with my ear is plucked with earphones. It showed me that I want to be alone.

It sucks when you're reading and someone interrupts. I think I would just answer in a not-so-interested-to-talk-right-now way, and if the other person would take a hint, he/she would walk away. But, that has rarely happened to me, so I can't really tell. When I was still studying, I don't know why I loved reading my lectures at McDonalds. The scattered noise sounded soothing to me, and it becomes a white noise which made me concentrate on what it was I was reading. I only read magazines at Starbucks.

I really hate it when people interrupt me when reading. It's hard for me to focus on the reading afterwards because when I start reading I just want to continue 'til the end but when I stop, I just don't want to keep reading. What I do to avoid this is I go outside, sit on the stairs and drink coffee. But when that doesn't work, I go to my room and lock myself in there.
