A few years ago I tried my hand (at the bequest of a guy, Sam Hurt, who does it) at making a comic strip. Since those in the know who are creative always advise one to "write what you know," & I think this is at least partly about writing, I decided to base it on myself, Elicbxn, &--at the time--the 5 cats who shared our roomy house & yard. My first title was "Paws," but later on I renamed it "Welcome To the Zoo," which fit a lot better. I did over 60 of them, & virtually all have been printed for friends in a science fiction/fantasy fanzine, as well as --once--a local freebie newspaper (although the run I saw messed up & only printed half the strip--ARGH!). My original goal hasn't changed, but when I moved to the complex where I live now, my comics didn't make the trip! For years, now, Elic had been promising to find them (they were "lost" in one of her back yard storage sheds...there be dragons...), so I had severe doubts they'd ever see the light of day again. Too, sometimes varmints got in & destroyed things...I grieved at all that original art being mouse/bug poop...but I was at the computer, MyLotting, Sunday, & I heard a familiar sound... It was Elic--unlocking my door! She wasn't due to come until today (Monday the 6th of June--for future reference, since MyLot has the odd habit of not dating our posts, just saying "posted X hours, days, months or years ago")(???)...anyway, here she was...with the shabby old folding file, filled with my comic strips!!! Oh, I can't express how happy that made me! I was floored! My faith in her restored! Yaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy! It even helped me get through some really bad & irksome news later this morning! The comic strip, by the way, is about real cats & their funny behaviors, & I've even had people who are more "dog people" than cat fans say they found them funny. When Elic scans them into the computer, I'll share some of my favorites with all of you! Oooo, I'm so happy HAPPY happy! (Picture Snoopy's Spring dance! Hee!) How cool is that?! I'm sure that really made your day to have them found and back in your hands again. I can't wait to see a few of your strips. Yes, each and every cat has it's distinct personality, and it's funny some of the stuff they do. I have a huge cat (rescued cat) named Garfield, same coloring & attitude lol. He's so big he'd make 2 of a normal cat, not fat, just huge! When I lay down to watch tv in the evening, he likes to lay aimed at my shoulder, then he starts to treading on my arm and purrs. Last night I had a stiff shoulder and patted it, hahaha, he started treading where I was patting. I told my daughter that he was a masseuse in training, and a pretty good one to boot. Keep cartooning! Almost all folks love a good animal cartoon:-)

(Your little running man up there is making me crazy! ) I wish I could show them to you right now! Elic has to get her techie roomie to show her how to scan things in, & as soon as she does, I'll put them into my pics section! All cats I've ever been owned by are rescues. My favorite kind! Blessings on you for rescuing your Garfield! I know full well how it can be with sore body parts from tolerating kitties on them! Speaking of masseuses, today I watched an old episode of "Honey I Shrunk the Kids," & in it, Salinski's time machine was accidentally triggered by the family dog. It brought a huge wild cat from the past (I think), but instead of attacking, this biiiig pussycat lies down, looks soooo cute, & begins kneading the floor! GREAT big paws! So funny! Here's hoping WTTZ is up soon! Maggiepie "There's a special place in Hell for thieves, & but it's not in as hot a place as where the bureaucrats are kept." ~ C. Crouch artist/SF writer/poet[/i]

Go figure, I never got any email saying you replied, then I got one today with BarBara's reply. Didn't mean to not answer... Yeah, I always say the little running man is a symbol of me...often running around in constant circles getting nowhere. I really only take in rescued cats. I live on a farm, and quite often somebody will drop one or two off (in the middle of the night.) I remember that in Honey I Shrunk the Kids, that cat was really funny!! @BarBaraPrz Hahaha, thanks SO much for the correction (and the sx change laugh :-) Duh...I had no idea there was different verbiage for a male or female on the word masseur/masseuse. Learn something new every day!

Hi there Maggiepie! That is good news indeed! It's really hard to lose some things that you worked really hard for. I've been there when I lost the first half of my novel when my sister's laptop crashed. I know I should have kept another copy of it but that was long ago and I relied on the laptop thinking that it won't have any problems at that time because it was fairly new. Hope to see your work soon.

When my laptop was stolen, I hadn't learned how to download stuff onto disk, so the story I had on it--all the drafts--are lost forever. Don't you love/hate computers? oh maggiepie one of these day I will see your comic strip in one of our daily papers here and brag oh I knew her when blah blah. Really cats, live cats are wonderful for making us laugh. And with your talent and writing from what you know you will make a real success.Look at Garfield and what the comic writer did and I am not sure if that was based on a real cat or not.t bet you will be a huge hit.i am so glad for you that your comic strips were found.hip hip hurrah.I am an unpublished writer and most of what I have written is now in storage. cry sob. but I can still write and do so quite often Whether or not I am really good i do not know but am told I have real talent. However the publishers to whom i sent some stuff did not think so or at least they said this in not our line blah blah blah. However I have sold some poems and had then published for free copies of small magazines.good luck and God bless. see you in the funny papers

That's probably the only permissible time one may use that old phrase without being flippant! Thank you for the compliment! I freely admit I take pride in my writing. You should, too! I think you should get your work out of storage & do things with it! None of us lives forever (in this world, anyway), & being lauded posthumously isn't any danged fun! LOL! Anyway, you could share it with us! Well, MyLot wouldn't allow it in discussions, but surely you could PM us--unless you wrote novels....hee! Share? I am so happy for you, Girlfriend. My loss did not turn out as well as yours, I fear. I started writing a book many years ago. I got the first four chapters written and hard copied then got stuck in a writer's block for many years until 2005 when we were living in Spokane, WA. My sister had given me a laptop and I was dinking around with it...actually got three more chapters written, then the laptop fried! I took it to the computer doctor and they were unable to retrieve my chapters! I have been unable to rewrite them since then and I fear I will never finish my book...although my daughter insists that I have to! Needless to say she loves the chapters we have. I have also lost a soap opera/melodrama that I had written in seven segments. I had three hard copies and showed them to some friends who were over for dinner one time but have not been able to find them since then. They are lost in the abyss that is my home.

I know just how you feel, believe me. I had an SF story ready for print once, & I had to move to another town. Somehow the story was, apparently, pitched out by accident (my own fault). I spent the next 2 years unable to sleep sometimes, & going through things in my closet, just sure it had to be there...somewhere. Finally I found an older draft & reworked it, & it came out much better! I gave it to a woman to print in her fanzine, & I'm so glad I did that, because the guy who originally wanted it turned out to be a complete jerk, & his 'zine was awful! Granted, the 'zine that did print it only had a tiny run, but for years after I heard good things about it. Years later, I won a $2000 laptop Mac from the University of Texas in, of all things, a coloring contest. I'd been aiming for 2nd prize--500 CDs--but was blown away to win first prize! I saw some of the other entries, & I'd had some serious competition! I had no idea how to use it, though, & I made a few, probably serous, mistakes learning, but finally I wrote a story I'd always wanted to write, about a recluse I knew of when I was a kid. The story was in its final draft on the computer, & I tried to get it to save, but it froze. I sighed, stopped, & got ready to go to Church. Elic was my roomie then, & she was out of town, so I had to take a ride with a veeeeerrrryyyy sllloooowwww couple. They stayed extra-long after Mass, so by the time I'd come home, I'd been away for hours. The burglars had been given all the time they needed to clean us out...along with my new little laptop...& my story. Oh, I might be able to reconstruct it, but the trauma! I know I could never recreate the thing the way I'd written it, & frankly, it was so good I'm sure I could sell it if I could remember it all. All those beautiful words...& they were likely simply erased, unread. Stillborn... So, yes, I deeply sympathize. Someone later pointed out hat the university newspaper had printed my winning, with my picture. They surmised that someone decided they'd grab my computer. After all, there was hardly any effort needed to locate me; I was listed in the campus phone book. For once, I'm going to put a quote that fits this post. It's just too appropriate to waste on any other. Maggiepie "There's a special place in Hell for thieves, & but it's not in as hot a place as where the bureaucrats are kept." ~ C. Well, any time in the last few years would've been just as good! Still, they're here, now, & it's definitely a case of better late than never! And as I said, just knowing they are here now softened the blow of one or two other not-nice things that happened yesterday. I may post about it later, in fact. But not in this joyful discussion! "Calloo, callay! O frabjeous day!" Now if Elic can just locate my never-used scanner! Thanks! It's particularly amusing that you mention your boxes, because along with the WTTZ 'toons, Elic also found a huge load of story drafts, scraps of stories, poems & maundering driblets of drek that date back decades. Some of these have been printed, mostly not, but I'm rereading them, & I've actually found a few things which, cleaned up & polished, are still worth seeing again! It's a bit like opening a time capsule! Maybe you should try opening yours! Don't be afraid it's not worth seeing; you might be surprised! My son did have me drag out two paintings to show his girlfriend, I was a little shocked that he thought that much of them. My computer that got fried by lightening had stories stored on it too. BUT, the best one is over on Helium so it's not lost forever! lol
