Your Doctor is a business person

Whenever I hear of abuse of people by a Doctor it makes me mad. Doctors use to be next to God in people's minds but that is no longer true. They have knowledge and we hope the ability to use it. But in today's world where knowledge is available to all of us through the Internet we can find the answers once we know the questions to ask. In fact in many cases we never see a Doctor in person, but they are selling service and in the USA this does not come cheaply. I pay a lot for that service even if it's in insurance payments and I have the right to demand value for my money just as anyother business deal. So when I get bad service, whether it's advice or attitude I have every right to complain and if laws are broken even sue in the courts. If you accept bad service you just encourage the continued abuse.

hello Pat, an American friend who by the way was a retired doctor and who had has spent his time extensively in the East to study alternative medicine once told me the story that in some parts of ancient China, families had doctor to take care of the health of the whole house hold, you pay them continuously as long as nobody gets sick, now in case some family member becomes ill, he treats them with out you paying anything cause he in some way failed to do his job, just a thought, should we have followed their example, haha and avoid commercialism? I really do not know but stories like this make me glad that I became a businessman rather than continue medical school and be accused later of commercialism . In fairness to doctors, their families spent a lot for them to be there so maybe they have to get the ROI without crossing the thin line of morality and compassion.

Also, on a health rather than a business topic, you are ultimately the person in charge of your health, not your doctor, and you should question question question until you understand.

I have been fortunate to have or to choose good doctors. I have changed dentists over service that I felt was lacking, though. I almost never see a doctor. When I have appointments, I am seen quickly. You are right, it is business.

Through my life there have been several doctors that I will refuse to see because of the way that they've treated either myself or another member of my family. In fact, I contribute the fact that my husband's previous primary care provider wouldn't listen to his complaints about his health and told him he needed to go to narcotic rehab as a part of the reason that it took so long for him to be diagnosed with Hodgkin's. He doesn't see that doctor anymore and within just a few months of changing doctors (five months actually because there were a number of things that he could have had), he had a diagnosis of his illness. Just a month after his diagnosis he was receiving treatment. That is what you get when you find a doctor that does genuinely care.

I agree with you friend now a days Dr. takes only money and not give proper treatment. But we cant do the complaint everybody mix in that case. Now every person thought about only business they not thought about humane life. So my mother in law hate the Dr. and she never goes to Dr. if she is not feeling well she takes house treatment but no go to near the Dr.

I totally agree with you savypat. I know a doctor that I used to go to that is not a very nice person at all. In fact he is scum. He was also my brothers doctor and he just kept telling him that he is fine, nothings wrong. Well about a month ago my brother wound up in the hospital. The problem was there was water build up in his legs and lungs. He is fine now. But when I took him to the doctor that day, the doctor was very nasty and was yelling at him. I told the doctor to check his legs, that he needed a water pill, his response was, "He probably does, I am not going to check his legs, he is going to the hospital." The guy is a creep. I have made a few complaints about him already.

Hi savypat, I am fortune to live in Canada where we have a good Medicare system and I've also had the same family doctor for thirty years now, and he is very good. I agree with you that we should all expect good service from our doctors, and especially in your case where you have to pay for it yourself. I am very grateful to have such a good doctor, who hopefully will be practicing for a few years yet. Blessings.
