Beating Fleas

This year we've been having a problem that we've not experienced to much in the past. We have fleas and I don't like it at all. We currently have three pets, two dogs and one cat (we had to have one put down last weekend because she had a huge tumor in abdomen). All three of the animals are treated monthly with the spot on treatment and I've tried borax on the floors to get rid of the fleas, but it doesn't seem to be working. So, I'm asking for suggestions from an mylotters as to what they do to control fleas in their home. I'm just about at my wit's end here. In addition to the treatments in the house, I've also started taking the dogs out front instead of in the back yard because there are fewer bugs in the front. Any and all suggestions are very much appreciated.

I got such a sever infection in my house I had to dust with Seven(spelling may be off) It's a stron pesticide, you could use fles bombs but I know you both have health conditions so be very careful. If you go this way make sure every four legged creature gets a flea bath before they get back in the house. One thing about the Seven it lasts a long time, years. I'd check things out on the Internet for ideas. Blessings, I know this is a big hassel.

Yes, sevin does work, but my husband hates to use chemicals in the house, even though if properly used, I believe it is safe..

I'll have to check into the Sevin, I don't know if it is available around here, but it would certainly be worth ordering if I had to go that route. I'm sick of the fleas.

I'm not the biggest fan of chemicals myself, but if it keeps the animals (and us) from suffering then it is worth it to me.

Sorry to hear about your one pet.. As for fleas, tell me about!!!!! I have two dogs, beagle/border collie mix and I also use the drops. Penny has the beagle short hair, but Ciara has the border collie long hair and last month when I put the drops on Ciara, I tried to get it to her skin, but my daughter, (she's a groomer) came over and said Ciara had fleas..so we thought that because it is so hard to part that long thick hair, that maybe I should get her shaved..Not only will she be cooler, but it will be easier to apply the drops. Well, I applied the drops 2 weeks ago and now both dogs have fleas..I also use Zodiak, a spray I get at TSC to kill the fleas on the carpet, but it isn't working. As much as I hated to do this, I sprinkled some stuff on the lawn too, and still they have fleas.. Then I remembered another mylotter gave me this tip, which I started doing this week and I hope that soon these pests will be history. Here is what she said: Use garlic once or twice a week - Use ground meat, cooked or hot dogs ~ Slice 1 - 2 of medium garlic, enough to put into hot dog - cut hot dog into 4 pieces with slice of garlic inside each piece~ If cooked meat is used, sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of powered garlic to 1/2 lb. of meat cooked together. If the smell of the 'Doggie Garlic breath' is a problem, moisten a plain dog biscuit and lay or cover with fresh parsley or roll in dried parsley. I am using garlic powder and I really hope this works, because they don't have just a few fleas, but lots of fleas..:(

I have also heard that about dogs and garlic, but I wonder if done only a couple times a week, if it is really any worse than the chemicals we put on them that doesn't work...I am going to give it a couple more weeks, if they still have fleas, then I am clueless on how to get rid of them...

For me, I don't think that I'm going to try it aside from the little bits that they get from the food that we don't eat. Mostly that is because of the fact that my girls are pretty small ones.

I've heard about using garlic to get rid of fleas as well, but I've also heard from a couple of my vet friends that it can be toxic, so I'm not really sure that I want to go that route. However, as people in our house, we certainly do consume a lot of garlic.

There are a ton of fleas in my area. We get them every summer and the cats we have this year don't even go outside, but they still have them pretty bad. It's sickening! Mostly we use Advantage to control it, and it works pretty well. I've never liked Frontline. Make sure you do not use any store bought treatments, especially Hartz! Hartz spot on treatments for cats contain a chemical that is toxic to cats and it will kill your cat! For some home remedies: Sprinkle salt around your yard just before it rains. I'm not sure why but this works to kill most of the fleas in your yard and on your property so you don't keep carrying them into the house. I tried it last year and it seriously cut down our flea population. Dawn dish soap kills fleas.. use the original blue kind. A vet told me this over the phone when I had a kitten too young for flea treatments. You can bathe the animals in the Dawn dish soap. It's safe for the animals, but kills the fleas. When the fleas in my house are real bad (and it's gotten that way many times due to not having the $ for the flea meds) I will sit with a cup of hot soapy water (put Dawn dish soap in the water). Anytime I see a flea on me I pick it up and drop it in the water... easier than rolling them in your fingers to kill them. I've also been so desperate that I'll sit and pick fleas off the cats and drop them into the soapy water. At night, if you're sitting there watching TV or something.. get a metal pan, like a cake pan or deep cookie sheet.. it's got to be a shiny metal kind that can contain water, like 2 inches deep. Fill it up with soapy water and place a lit candle either in the pan or right next to it. Obviously this works best in a dark room. The light reflects off the pan, which attracts the fleas, the warmth also attracts the fleas. They will jump right into the pan and die. Obviously this is something that will need supervision, that's why I say to do it while you're watching TV so you can ensure the animals do not go near the water or the candle. This won't necessarily rid your home of fleas.. but it will help! I've done all these things myself. Oh.. one last tip I learned.. vacuuming your home too often can actually increase the number of fleas you have. Something about running the vacuum over the carpets actually causes the flea eggs to hatch. Plus the fleas can escape from your vacuum. This is also something I've been told by a vet.. when you do vacuum, you must immediately empty the vacuum into an outdoor trash can so the fleas cannot reenter your home.. even if you're using a so called flea treatment on the carpets because they aren't necessarily guaranteed to work. As a last resort.. what I had to do when my fleas got too out of control.. get the animals and people out of the house for about 4 hours, and set off bug bombs in the house. You can buy these anywhere.. they kill any living bug in the house. Make sure to read the product to see that it kills fleas, though most do. We had to use these a lot in the first place we lived because at the time the only way to get good flea meds was through the vet (where as now we can buy them online) and the vet always wanted to make a new appointment for the animals which I could rarely afford. So at that time we would lock the cats in the basement and flea bomb the rest of the house. The only pain is that afterwards you have to clean everything to get the residue off. Putting sheets over things helps.. the fumes still get through but the residue does not.

Well, we are not at the point of sprinkling the carpet powder and trying that. I ended up doing that last year near the end of the warmer season and it seemed to work really well, so we are doing that again and then we also have Sevin for in the yard. Hopefully that will do the trick, oh and tomorrow is bath day for Jasmine and Chloe (and they are bathed with the Dawn).

We had that problem a few years ago, and OMG is was terrible! Our vet gave both our dog and cat a pill that instantly killed the fleas. They suggested we keep our pets with them overnight so we could bomb the house. We put a flea bomb in every room in the house (including all bathrooms). We never saw another flea again...thank goodness. That summer was terrible for pets all around our area. Pets that never had fleas seemed to have them. Good luck to you...I know the pain it is to have fleas.

It really is a pain and considering that it could have been the fleas that killed Buttercup, it is bothering me even more. I am determined to win this battle, whether it kills me or not. We've got flea dust on the carpet right now and Sevin to put out in the yard.

We had trouble with fleas with my dog this year too. We found the Hartz spray found at wal mart and tried it. We sprayed down all the floors and kept our dog out for several hours while the smells dissipated. We also did a double dose of his flea gel and did a flea bath, making sure to keep the shampoo on for at least 5 minutes. I literally saw the little bugs falling off.

I've been bathing the dogs regularly with Dawn dish soap and I can see them falling off of Chloe and Jasmine. It seems to make a difference, but I really do have to bathe them on a regular basis.

you might have to do the actual flea bath stuff. it is medicated. It seems to dry out my dogs skin so a day or so later i would do an oatmeal based shampoo bath to help get out the dry skin and moisturize.

I have wanted to do that, but everytime I go to get some flea shampoo, the shelves are empty, I think everyone is battling fleas.

Yeah, I just noticed this evening that the mosquitos are bad as well. I went outside to wait on my mother to get here (we were running to the store and my husband had the car) and I got a ton of mosquito bites. I hope that the Sevin will help with those as well.

My friend is having a horrible time as well. Everything we've researched online states to thoroughly clean your home - vacuum everything & then throw the vacuum bag outside in the trash. Use Sevin powder around the entire foundation of your home. Continue using the spot-on treatments unless you're using a cheap grocery store version, then I would switch to something better. Wal-Mart now makes a good Frontline alternative. If you've already been using Frontline, I have read that there are cases where Frontline just stops working. If that seems to be the case, try switching to another brand of treatment. Good luck, it's a rotten, nasty battle but it can be won! I am really sorry about the loss of one of your pets. :(

I noticed at Pet Smart that they have a spot on treatment that is similar to Advantage (same active ingredients and such) so I'm thinking of trying that one next time since it doesn't seem like Frontline is doing it. Additionally, the vet suggested that we may have to use both products, so I'm going to call my usual vet and see if she thinks that is safe. I've been vacuuming the house and washing toys like a mad woman to try to get rid of as many of them as possible.

I've never had fleas but we've had lice. And I was recommended to use the flea spray from wal-mart as well on furniture. But I know fleas are probably much more agressive than lice are and probably have fewer areas they infest. I wish you the best of luck getting rid of this problem!

Knock on wood, we've never had lice, but these fleas are absolutely killing me. I was doing some research the other day and found that pyrethrin is supposed to work for both lice and fleas, so my next project is to try to find some of that.

this is 2 days old and i just got it today. my hotmail is still really sucko. well i cant hep much on that i really know tho, how tough it is to control fleas. its one of the only few things i like about az. ive never had a lot of trouble here with them but they were terrible in florida. i just got to where i was giving coco a pill once a month for them and its all that worked was that pill. i cant remember the name but ask your vet about it. they are fairly expensive but last the whole month and really work. if you can keep the animals from getting them on them, it will help with the house infectation also.

Don't feel bad about not getting the notification until today, I got home and had about 100 that had came through my email. I wish that I lived somewhere where we didn't have fleas, but no such luck, if you name it, they exist around here in some way, shape or form from fleas and ticks, spiders, Japanese Beetles and ants. Worst thing is, I hate bugs.

Yeah this year the battle with the fleas are seeming unbeatable. I only have one big dog and it seems we have to keep bathing him. What i do is use dawn dish soap and it kills the fleas. At least until more find him

I would put on some gloves and give it a try. Surprisingly this one time when I rescued this cat it was filthy and I gave him a bathe. He loves bathes not and has every since that day! But unfortunately not every cat is like this

Might have to grab some gloves at the store tomorrow and give that a try as well. Wish I could get hubby to do it, but with his blood counts being low due to chemo, that is definitely the last thing that he needs to do.

You are right about the Dawn dish soap, that is what I've been using to bathe the dogs. Of course, I can't give the cat a bath because I really don't want her to scratch me any more than I've already been scratched.
