Hi all! In the era of internet and endless sites, I think, we can widen the horizon of our knowledge and skills. I was thinking – will it be feasible to learn a new language through any website? Are you aware about any such site, which imparts training or courses in foreign languages? Has anyone of you tried to learn a foreign language through on line learning methods? If anybody tried, how was your experience? Is it worth learning any foreign language through on line method? Your suggestions, views and ideas please. Have a great day to all!

Dee are you aware that i can read and write Hangul? Hangul is the native language of Korea and nobody taught me that except the internet. I learned about the Hangul characters online and learn how to write them online. I'm learning a few expressions and and vocabularies but i don't think it's effective when it comes to conversational lessons. I need someone to talk to, to learn how to converse well.

It is my pleasure you to know about your experiences. It sounds nice to hear that you have studied Spanish too. You can revamp it through internet, if you have time. It means you are a linguist.

Hi toni It is really great to hear that you know Hangul a native language of Korea and you learnt it by yoru own efforts.. You may not have acquired the mastery over it, however, it always gives us a flip that we know a foreign language. Find out any Korean friend to talk. Many thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi Jai! I agree with you that for learning a new language one would require time and determination. However, it would be a great fun to learn something new to charge ourselves from the monotony of life. It is nice to hear that you have picked up some Hindi and Malayalam words from your friends and am sure you make use of those words while conversing with Hindi knowing friends. Thanks for joining us.

i guess it's the best way to learn any language, from friends. online learning is fine and good, but there are times that learning is best when you get it from the streets?

Any learning needs, motivation, hard work and determination. THis being the case, it may be possible to learn a foreign language online too. However, getting this online may prove more expensive than some real time classes because we may be asked to pay in dollars[per hour rate].I have not learned any language online. I know only two languages and I know these reasonably well.[I can write well both in Tamil and English].My hindi is lamentable.

hi there dpk262006, it is good to hear that you are interested in learning and adopting new languages. aside from that, i am also glad that you are able to maximise the use of the internet thru this field. with reference to your query, learning via internet is fine. it is similar when you are attending a lesson inside the school. well, not to mention so much differencees, since if you are just attending via internet, you can control you time unlike if you are attending a school class, you are compelled to abide to the school timings. the only thing, you will need to discipline your self when listening and studying via internet in order for you to comprehend quickly the foreign words that you might encounter.

I am learning Chinese and Korean online. The site give free basic lessons where you can submit a written as well as an audio exercises based on the lessons given and the native speakers would review and give you tips on the correct grammar and pronunciations. I believe this is good for me as this site is free and the members are outstanding. There would always native speakers who you can talk and practice. The problem is, I am only online when I am at work, so talking to the natives is almost impossible for me. Still, they are good enough to review my exercises. Of course with Chinese, I learned the basic in a course with a native speaker as the teacher, but then I can broaden my vocabulary and phrases through y online friends...

Hi dpk I have not tried learning a foreign language through an online site. Can it be done? Yes! Is it easy? No.. lol.. It will take a lot of persistence as learning in a classroom with one on one teaching is best. At any rate any additional language must be continually used daily or one will forget what they have learned. Sorry I can't help with any course. I do fluently speak and write Spanish but this came with the years of using it.

Hi HWG! Please see the response at S.No. 6 by lotter Maferneto. He has mentioned about two interesting sites and I logged into those sites, which appear interesting and interactive. I do not know whether it is easy or not, but there is no harm in trying. I know it will require constant practice, that could be taken care of. Many thanks for dropping and it is nice to hear that you have 'mastered' Spanish after much practice.

I've never tried learning languages online. It should be interesting to learn foreign languages as it will benefit us in the long run. I've taken French language class when I was in college but it was very basic and wish to continue where I stopped. If they have it online it will be an advantage for me to learn another language.

I have never tried to learn any foreign language through net but I tried one Indian language and felt that it is not satisfactory. We have 1618 languages in our country; out of them how many we know it.

I’ve seen a site called Livemocha that claims to be “the World’s Largest Language Learning Community.” It looks good although haven’t joined myself. I recall years ago my auntie was attempting to learn French with records, you know the old vinyl’s, so I don’t see why it couldn’t be done online.

Hi Paula! Another mylotter at S.No.6 made a mention of this site Livemocha and I have logged into that site and I find it interesting. I feel learning a language through on line methods would be easier than learning it through vinyl records.. Moreover, we can take our own time to learn. Thanks a lot for dropping in.

Hi, good topic of discussion! I knew a man who was not highly educated. He was from Chinese/Mandarin education. Therefore he can't converse in English well. However, he learn to use internet and discover sites that teach English for free. He will practice to pronounce all the words correctly, find the meaning of it and he basically practice to converse with us and others in English only. He avoid speaking in Chinese to us in order to practice his English. He is an excellent English speaking chinese chap among us. Great job

Hey Dpk, I have tried couple times to learn a foreign language, the first time was compulsory at high school where i learnt the basics of french and attempted Italian, i still remember a little of french because i tried to refresh my memory by buying a English to french language book, and recently i tried an online site to help me learn Spanish. well the hardest of the three was definitely the book, i had no knowledge of how to enunciate any of the words correctly, the online site help with that aspect; allowing me to listen and repeat. unfortunately No one i knew spoke or wanted to learn Spanish so a give up quickly. i think the most important aspect of learning a language is being able to use it regularly, if a pair a of friends wanted to learn online it would be much more beneficial that just a single person like i was, then everyone is different so it depends on how you learn! Hi LittleMissSpritz! Welcome to mylot fraternity. It is nice to hear that you learnt French and Spanish and you enjoyed learning it. I understand from your response that on line methods could also be helpful in polishing of skills of a language. I would agree with you that if there are more than one person e.g. two friends, then it gets easier to discuss and understand the language. Thanks for sharing your views.

Learning a language online is a very interesting way of learning something. However, one will never master a language by learning it online for sure, but they can get a very broad idea about the language and can speak a good deal with it. There is this guy called Michel Thomas who has made many language learning audio files for Italian, French, German and Spanish. I have been using it for sometime and it really helped me in learning new languages or perfecting my French. You can buy the DVD's from his website or you can get them from torrent websites.
