Big dogs are very helpful in keeping the house safe (if they are not cowards). They demotivate potential intruders and attack the ones who do venture in. I remember watching Scarface and seeing that Tony got a pet tiger probably for the feeling of power from being able to control such a powerful beast. Do you think owners of big dogs have the same feeling?

My grand parent used to have dogs, the reason they have dogs is because they often left the house empty for entire day, so the dog will make whoever want to broke into their house think twice to do it... so my grandparent feel more secure leaving their house when they have dogs, other people may feel powerful if they have dogs, i think it depend on the person who have the dog..

I do have big dog. He is so helpful indeed especially night time when we are asleep for he is really a watch dog or guard dog to us. Yes it keeps the house safe. I think being a respectful and disciplined owner makes your dog a keeper of safety to your home and your family.

Yes if you are a respectful and disciplined owner your dog will be much more likely to take care of you.

I think it makes some people feel powerful, especially if the dog is aggressive or viscious.

Yes because if anyone tries anything then the dog will always have their back.

Not me, do you know how much it costs to feed one of those big dogs? I just feel poor.

Yes I guess it would take a lot out of a person to be able to take care of such a big animal.

Maybe it is, I have a friend who recently got herself a big dog though it's still a pup but it will grow up into a big and strong German Shepherd. I guess having a big dog does make you feel good, knowing that you have a strong dog that can take down anyone who tries to harm you or invade your home. But I use to have a small dog and she was pretty aggressive. Anyone who was a stranger to her, she would bark and snap at them mercilessly. Even though, a small dog, she was one ball of energy, she'll keep going until the stranger is out of her site. I was pretty confident in having her!

more than that,i think may be the owners likes their dog's breed instead of its body type, some kind of dog smart or loyalty,my favorite dog just like wolf from its appearance, such as samoyed, alaskan and husky, these dog soft hairy feel make me like to touch it's head, though some dog are big body type but not every dog make man feel safety.

Yes some people just like them for their friendliness. There are many reasons why people like dogs. You are very right

Not all of us, I can't have a dog where I am now; but, I loved having great danes and german shepherds - both big dogs. I like a dog that you can actually play with. One that can keep up with you. One that if it misbehaves a quick "swat" on the rump will remind it to behave and won't get other people thinking you are abusing the animal. Not being able to correct a small dog (or being afraid to correct them) results in tiny dogs that "rule the roost" and actually terrorize their owners.

Yes You are right. I too would rather a dog that I do not feel fearful of correcting. They need to be disciplined at times.

It depends on the dog's personality and how big is big dog. I had a German Shepard which when we were around was the cutest gentlest dog you would ever meet, when we were not home he had a reputation for being defensive, yet he never bit anyone. On the other hand I had a Chihuahua who bit at least 5 people that we know of. I am sure that many people prefer big dogs because they are impressive, yet there are many who like a dog, because of their personality not because of their size.

We used to have this big and ferocious dog in our house when we were kids. It was scary but would not do anything to the family. anyway when it was with us, we didn't feel powerful but did feel safe.

Bigger dogs definitely make me feel more secure, but I'm only able to have cats right now. A few weeks ago, here in houston, there was a report of a break in they even stabbed the pet chihuahua.

Wow! That is horrible. Maybe the chihuahua was brave and put up a fight. That is so sad.

I think so. Most people are obsessed with power and will take the opportunity to wield it in anyway possible. But these dog owners should be responsible enough in controlling their pets.

Yes they should remember that the dogs need to be controlled and are not just for sure.
