Can't hooked a printer to computer

United States

I finally got around to hooking up my printer to my computer! I had the printer for a while now and decided just to do it. First I realized I needed an USB cable! I went and bought it no big deal. Then tried to set the printer up on my computer. It won't let me! It tells me I need Admistrator Privileges to do so! I am so frustrated! I e-mailed my brother who gave me the computer if he can help. Anyone else have problems setting up a printer?

I don't have problem with that, because I always setup the driver in Administration. I just following the steps and it work very well.

Ah! That might be a clue. Log in as administrator and temporarily turn off all your anti-virus software and firewall. It may be blocking the installation of your printer.

Part of the problem is my brother gave me the computer and it came form where he works. I did what he told me. It didn't work and now I will have to contact my brother again. I am getting really piised off! He sets up the computer so I don't end up with tons of viruses, which has happened in the past! In the process I can't hook up my printer! Not happy!

You need to log in to your computer at startup as Administator or as a user with administrator rights. Check with your brother if he had an Administrator password. Most home users don't bother with a password but if your computer came from an office then it probably would. Download from the printer makers website the printer drivers for your model and your operating system if you have not got a CD with your printer.

My comuter came form the place where my brother works. I contacted him and told me what to do. I used my name and password I was given. It didn't work! I am not a happy camper! Will have to contact my brother again and see if he can help. If not I am going to be more frustrated!

Many offices doctor their computers to stop the sort of thing you are trying to do. They modify Windows so that employees cannot do things that home computer users can do easily. This is all to protect the office network of computers from employees unknowingly causing a problem loading a program from a floppy or a USB flash drive. Your computer may be configured to use their printer and only their printer! It may not be the case with your computer but I have seen many cases just like it. The only way I got round the problem was to wipe the hard drive and load a new copy of Windows; and that is not as easy as Microsoft would have you believe.

If you need admin privileges, I'd say the problem is with your computer and not the printer. Did your brother set up the computer for you? If so, he may have admin privileges and will have to install the printer. If that's the case, ask him to give you admin privileges so you can do things like this yourself in the future.

I have my printer hooked up and it works just fine. It has a fax machine on it too and I cannot figure out how to make it work either.

I'm not sure about this but are you already install your printer driver? One more thing, are you using Password lock on your computer or deepfreeze program?

After see a whole discussion seem like your computer being password (at this point I understand why you can't install your printer driver). Since you not the one who create it, the best solution is asked person who made it for you how to reset it. If you using Windows as your operating system, there is a way to reset this password using small program called Trinity Rescue Kit. I'm not sure that I have right answer this but it' better to see detail here: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-a-Windows-XP-or-Vista-Password I hope this could help
