Pop can aluminum tabs?!

Why are these so popular? If you look on eBay people are paying 25.00 just for about 2 lbs of them. Why are they so popular? I have tons of them in my sunny delight jug. I started collecting them hoping that my sons school would want them because his day care did a while back. But they don't so I had no clue what to do with them. So I noticed that I can give them away for points on listia so is what I have been doing. What can people do with those?

Like Jill said, my son's school also collects them for the Ronald McDonald House and the class who collects the most gets a pizza party. But I started collecting them long before that when my sister was on dialysis and the place where she went collected these tabs, probably to help pay for the equipment or something.

Thats cool. I like when they make things like that. Where you can collect things to help instead of breaking the wallet.

ACtually this is news to me, this is the first I have heard of this . I had no idea people actually collected these. And the most interesting how much people are willing to pay for them. HMMM very interesting.

Yea that is what I am saying. Here I had tons of them getting ready to donate them. But since none of the schools i want to give them to want them I will just auction them off at listia. I have one going there for 100 pop tabs. Lets see where they end up at?

Well maybe I should offer more. It only went for 16 credits so maybe I should just list them on eBay. Maybe I'll get more.

I haven't noticed it where I live, the only time I collected them was a few years back as they had a promotion that if you collected whatever the amount was you could trade it in for a free T-shirt. These fads though can be unpredictable and sometimes difficult to understand. The fact that tabs are used to make things, may imply that certain colours that are difficult to find may create a market. Just a note, 2lbs of tabs are a lot of tabs, as they weigh a few ounces at most, to get that amount requires a lot of cans.

Yeah 2lbs are a lot I think the lady said about 5,000 tabs! I know I have about that in my sunny delight jug. I know it is more than half full.

I have collected these for my granddaughter and they donate them to the Ronald McDonald house. I have never made anything from them so besides recycling I don't know what you would do with them.

I have been searching around and the first post on this discussion has a website that shows all the possibilities. Some people donate then and some people make crafts out of them. Like belts, purses, assessory type of stuff.

Although this kind of pop tab creations are new to me...back in the day..you'd pull the tab off a can and save them and link them together for belts or things. Yeah, I am sure there was more to do with them than that, but that's what we did with them. And see how long a "rope" we could make with them!

I miss being a kid! Seems like things were so much more amusing and it was easier to make goals out of nonsense. I remember collecting things when I was younger as well. Now I think it is cool to have a sunny delight jug full of pop tabs just sitting on my counter here pretty soon maybe ill dress the jug in a dress or something for decorations.

There was a time when I collected those too. I was told that you can donate those tabs to make aluminum wheel chairs. I'm not really sure if it were true or not. But maybe that's why some people buy them. If they did recycle them to make wheel chairs then good!

I think they are mainly buying them for craft ideas. But that would be great to donate and help someone who needs it. The only thing is that when they make these wheel chairs are they still charging the patients out the whoo hoo for them? Cause if they are then they can fund their own makings with the insurance companies money!

I have seen purses, belts and bracelets made out of those pop tabs. I am actually saving some to make bracelets.

I know in Girl Scouts they made bracelets with them. And as you mentioned some groups wanted them for funds or donations to various groups but to sell them I don't know why.

I think the money from aluminum tabs is used to support the schools. Such is the case in my area.

Yeah thats what I was thinking but when I went to give them to my sons school they said that they do not want them that they do nothing with them. So i figured I had to find something else to do with them. I know they are the heaviest part of the can.

If i was you, i would count them rather than weigh them and try to sell them, that way, at least you will get to make some money, also you will know in the future where to sell them if you get any more.I do think that it is great that people can make some nice things from them, as well as sell what ever they have made.

I'm pretty sure if you save them you can cash them in for money somewhere. That's all I know though. Otherwise I've seen them used in many types of crafts.
