Sleeping for more than 8 hours

Hi mylotters! I am a person who loves sleep. I love the idea of sleeping and the activity or should I say, inactivity when sleeping. I love the rest and rejuvenating power it gives me when I wake up. I treasure sleep so much. The thing is, with so much going on right now, work, family, friends, loved ones, distractions, etc, I just can't get myself to sleep before 10 PM at night. I just can't. There are times that I come home from work and arrive late at night, usually around 9 PM, I still can't get to force myself to sleep. What do I do? I eat. I watch something on my laptop or just try to find more money making ways online. So, I end up usually having 5-6 hours of sleep on weekdays. But when it's my day off, especially on a Sunday, I make sure that I get to sleep more than 8 hours and try to make up my lost sleeping time. It's just who I am. How about you guys? Do you love sleep? How much time do you usually sleep? Can you share with us out of the ordinary sleeping routines?

Ehhh? I would be so sad (and very grouchy) if I only had 5-6 hours of sleep. I usually average around 7-8 hours of sleep, but I feel like I need at least a 10 hour night at least once a week. Maybe I love sleep too much? lol But I will say that I do still have some difficulties sleepy once in a while. When I do, I either listen to music or try to do these breathing exercises that my Health Psychology professor taught me a while back. I let my wander and then ta-da! I'm out. haha Usually I prefer the music though because it's easier for me. Although it doesn't sound that hard, focusing on your breathing is more difficult than it seems. (_

I'm really not that good with breathing exercises. But I also have music at times to help me get to sleep. Just like you, I get a little grouchy and moody at the beginning of the day when I haven't gotten enough sleep. I wish I could learn how to do those breathing exercises.

I can't say I'm particularly good at the breathing exercises either, but apparently it's something that requires practice and when you don't practice, you lose the skill. Maybe I should do it more often? Anyway if it helps at all, you can try a counting thing with breathing. You breathe in 1, breathe out 1. Breathe in 2, breathe out 2. And then continue like that. A different professor told me that I should start over if I start focusing on something else too much, but sometimes that frustrates me, so I just focus back in on the number and continue where I left off. I really don't know if I'm any good at this whole thing though. haha

When I was working I also sleep 5-6 hours everyday except Saturdays and Sundays, my day off. But I will be at home by 7:30pm and usually check a lot of things on the net. These distractions are what keeps us wide awake in the evening - our mind is working so we don't actually feel sleepy even when we're tired.^^

Yeah. I totally get what you're saying. There's just so many distractions going right now that even though our eyes are too tired to watch or our heads are too tired to think, we still manage to do so. I just missed having more time and being able to sleep for at least 7 to 8 hours a night. I only manage to do so on a weekend when I've got no work to do.

Try not to open your laptop one night Last night I thought of sleeping at 12mn but then I got hooked with doing a new thing on the net, so I ended up sleeping at 2:30AM.

Maybe some of your dreams had you tired and in some way had manifested to reality. It's just a theory. But I remember that everytime I would eat too much at dinner time, I usually end up feeling too tired when waking up, unless I get enough sleep.

Yes I absolutely love sleeping. If sleeping was a job, I would have earned tons already. I sleep so darn much I hate it sometimes. After a long week, yesterday I crashed at around 9 and woke up today at 12, can you believe that? That's just how my weekdays are lol

That's quite amusing and almost unbelievable. Wow, I wish I could have that chance to sleep for more than 12 hours and not a care about time and other daily stuff. How I wish we could get paid sleeping like a log. That would be amazing.

i am fond of sleeping. but in a determined period. usually when i sleep for 7 hours or more, i get headaches and body pain.. seems like sleeping too much is really more tiring. i'd rather sleep for 2 hours max several times during the day rather than 8 straight hours.

Two hours? Really? I get disoriented and unfocused if I only get a couple of hours of sleep. But I guess, since it makes you feel better, then go for it. But wouldn't that be unhealthy don't you think? Well, anyways, it's better than not having to sleep at all.

I usually sleep 5-6 hours during workdays but I see to it that I could sleep longer during weekend cause I also love to sleep especially when it is raining.
• Philippines

Yeah. Sleeping with the sound of rain makes the sleeping more relaxing. In my case, if it's raining, I usually have some soothing music in my room and it really helps me get to sleep at an instant. 5-6 hours of sleep is okay for me on weekdays so long as I don't have a busy day ahead.

I do love to sleep. I get to bed early though on the days I have to work so I am refreshed. I might stay up a bit later on weekends. But for the most part I get to bed at the same time. I also love my naps. Since I get up so early in the morning to go to work I need a little nap to make it into the evening.
4 Nov 11
Yes, Totally the same as me. Getting to bed punctually seems to be a habit for me. At the weekend, I will free myself, but never later than 1:00 am.

Yeah I guess sleeping 8 hours a day would really be nice. If only I could do just that.

I love sleeping, but I don't like to sleep more than 8 hours. I have tried it and I feel like a zombie after waking up. As much as I want to have regular sleep, I can't. Lately I've been having 4-6 hours of sleep. The sleep hours that work well for me is 6-7 hours, so lately, I've been very sleepy all day.
• Philippines

It seems that you've never slept for more than 8 hours since that experience you had. Maybe this weekend, you can get some more sleep and have your regular 6-7 hours of sleep. I only get 4-6 hours of sleep if I am so busy with work and tons of workload, offline and at my day job. My friend once called me a sleepy head for feeling so sleepy all the time even after 7 hours of sleep. I wish I could get in the habit of being satisfied with 6-7 hours of sleep every night, and not feel sleepy at all during the day.

Now a days normally i sleep nearly more than 8 hours a day as i am just in home searching for a job. But once i get a job soon, like you my sleep will also decrease gradually. But for me i dont want to be sleeping the whole day even though i am in home. Even if i sleep for 6 or 7 hours, i want to sleep well in that time without any disturbance. But sleeping well is the best which keeps our healthy, a normal man should sleep atleast 8 hours a day but now a days its not possible for many persons.

Yeah, you're right. It seems that the busier a person gets, the lesser chance of having to sleep 8 hours a night. Most people I know, even my friends don't get to sleep 8 hours anymore. But as many have said, 8 hours is really good. It makes me feel better and refreshed after sleeping for at least 8 hours especially when I start a new work week.

Hi! I do this too.Over sleeping but you get even sleepier when you allow yourself to sleep more than the usual hours of sleep.Sleep is good fro our body but too much of it is not healthy either. There is always a time to sleep and a time do some activities. If you want to have a very nice sleep, exercise before you sleep it will signal your body that its time to sleep and rest and when you wake up you will feel refreshed not just because of the sleep but also of the exercise.

I don't like exercising before I sleep. A couple of years I go, my office mates and I went to the gym and the only time we could actually get there and exercise was during at night, around 7PM to 8PM and I ended up having insomnia, most days. That's why I never tried exercising at night anymore.

I just wish I could get 8 hours. I might lay in bed for 8 hours or for 12 hours even, but I don't sleep. I watch TV or whatever because I can't sleep. I usually fall asleep somewhere around 3 am and I'm up by 8 am.

You're just like one of my friends. We often tease her "Nocturnal" because she can't sleep at night and she only gets a few hours of sleep, almost at that same time as well. Sometimes, she doesn't sleep at all. As for me, I only sleep at 3 am when I know I don't have to wake up early the next day.

I can't say you sleep a lot. It's normal to sleep at least 8 hours a night. They even say (and tested + proved) that 10 hours of sleep a night is more healthy. It even showed that especially kids and women who sleep at least 10 hours a night have less overweight plus are more healty (and that is not because they are awake shorter and have less time to eat). I think I sleep way too less. Slept about nearly 15 years only for 2-3 hours a night. Have longer nights now but still think I need more sleep. But fact is I am not able to sleep longer no matter what day of the week it is. There are periods I go to bed later because I have many things to do and it's easier to do that if I am alone (so night time is the best time for me to work, be most productive and I find it way more relaxing as well)

That's nice to know. How I wish I could have shorted working hours at my day job so I can get that 10 hours of sleep. That would really be great. I don't know how you managed to sleep for just a couple of hours at night and still get to do your daily tasks properly. That's pretty amazing but I think could be a little unhealthy. Most people including myself, love working or doing stuff at night. It's most likely because of the time alone and the quieter environment that nights bring.

i usually sleep after work and wake up only 1-2 hours later.. then i would be be busy doing my laundry and other stuff as well.. usually i will sleep around 1 or 2 a.m and i wake up for work around 5 a.m.. i'm used to getting not enough sleep, no problems.. we can never get enough sleep and we can never get satisfied.. we can lack in sleep and still perform our best.. it all depends on how our body and mind adjusts and cope..

That's what I would really love to do. I wish I could have just a few hours of sleep and still perform my best at work. But when I get home from work, and if I would try sleeping for a couple of hours, I might not wake up after 2 hours to do some house tasks. I might end up waking the next day. I've had a few instances that proved I can't easily be awake once I hit the bed. I wish I could do something like that and get myself to feel good enough and be more productive as much as I want even after having a few hours of sleep.

I sleep about eight hours a night, pretty regularly. It used to be less. What I do not like is that I am going to bed around midnight and sleeping in until 8. I used to get up early. I also have a lot of eye strain when I stay on the computer so late.

I also like to sleep, but i find it hard to get off to sleep, as well as staying asleep. When i do get off to sleep i wake up, as i am in pain and then i find it really hard after taking more meds to go back off to sleep.I would love to sleep eight hours, if not longer if i could.

I think that about six or seven hours is about all I can handle when sleeping. Perhaps around eight at the most if I get to bed early enough. But rarely much more unless I am sick. That is the only rare instance that I am going to sleep for more than eight hours, maybe for a couple of days. If I am going to be more than sick and it is going to be something that is going to throw me off for a couple of weeks when I sleep outside of my sleep time. In fact, it does seem like if I sleep much longer, I'm actually more tired than I ever would be. That is just something about getting a good night's sleep but it only has to be a certain amount of time. Also a certain time frame is well. Which really is why I am dreading turning the clocks back this weekend. Because that is just going to screw up my sleep time. I tend to sleep a certain way and it does show, boy does it ever show.

You have a good point there. I remember having to sleep at times for more than 10 hours and I get some headaches when I wake up. But those were just a few times compared to the many times I've slept that long and made me feel better. What you said about feeling tired reminds me of a friend who said the same thing to me. I guess it's a good tip to sleep at a particular time of day and wake up at almost the same time everyday, huh? It sounds pretty good. I think that could benefit my health as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I love sleep as much as you do. It kills me when I should lost my sleeping hours as well. I spend most of my time sleeping on weekends. I face the same problem you face. I cannot get myself to sleep before 10pm because I mostly got home late. I try to catch up during weekend, too.

sleep blesses those who work hard and exert more. i work hard and sleep immediately, but like you, i also spend time before PC, trying to do so many things that i cant sleep, but when i do, I get energy next day. try relaxing by stretching legs and arms before and after sleep, it makes you more energetic.
• Philippines

Thanks. I'll try to do a few stretches before I go to bed and right after I awake. It's just that there's so many things to do, with so little time in our hands, that we end up depriving ourselves from the right amount of rest and sleep that our body needs. Bless us who work hard!

I also love to sleep..i usually can sleep more than 8 hours a day..but when my mind is active, or when i have something to work on, i'm lucky if i'll get 3-4 hours of sleep..but getting some power naps everyday, anywhere.. and just like you, during my free day, i mostly sleep longer, i i have no dates with my family..
• Philippines
3 Nov 11
Having power naps is really a good thing. I love power naps too. But I love sleep more. As in my case, when I get to have 3-4 hours of sleep because of something I'm working on, I find myself not functioning well enough at work, slow reflexes, slower thinking, slower responses after having just a few hours of sleep. And by the end of the day, I'm haggard and tired, unless I drink some energy drink of some sort. But the problem is, they might have some side effects. Anyway, I just try to wait for the weekend to come, patiently waiting til I can have enough sleep to make me feel better.
