I was a backpacker in my younger days. I still travel with a day pack on my back now that I am an independent traveler. In my backpacker days I traveled with a large backpack on my back and a day pack on my front. In the past I stayed in dorms in youth hostels and backpacker hostels. I found it a cheap way to travel and I went on a plane to the gateway destination. Then I go around on trains, buses and ferries. I backpacked around Europe by train at age 18 years old. Then at 20 to 21 years old I was a backpacker traveling around the world. That was my longest trip at just over one year. I did another long trip of several months at age 29 years old backpacking to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Good luck with the backpacking that you want to do.

well, hi my friends welcome to mylot community..I had experienced to backpackers overseas and locally.. basically, we must do it with friends, otherwise we will loss happy moment with them and unable to share every moments with them..At least, we must go with our partner..The most important things for backpackers is planning, planning and planning.. Take your time to do research on internet or better asking someone who had ever visit your backpacking destination, ask interesting places and most importantly cheap accomodation for us..If we have planning, so we will reduce the unbudgeted expenses during traveling which really enemy for every travellers.. happy backpacking my friend..

I haven't really tried traveling as a backpacker. I tend to arrange everything I will need and what I will do before I leave my country. So in effect, I travel still at my own comfort. But have tried staying at a backpacker's hostel in Kota Kinabalu. That was an eye opener for me. I had the chance to mingle and chat with experienced backpackers. Their stories were great and I hope I can do it one time in the near future...

Only take what is most necessary with you, be prepared on the fact that you might sleep outside, be willling to work for some food and leave. You can plan everything too if you like but if you just leave, have a goal where to go to or which places to visit and when you come back you can keep that in your memory if you have hard times. If you like make pics and keep a diary, you will be a completely different person if you come back.

I haven't had the opportunity to be a backpacker but I think you should start first exploring your country and appreciate its beauty. It will also serve as your training ground in learning the dos and donts of a traveler. If an opportunity arises, I would love to go to Israel, Spain and Japan :)
