When you get sick, do you make use of taking alternative medicines?

I got sick for over a week. I had fever, runny nose and cough. I took medicines that can be bought from pharmacies but after taking the medicines with their usual administration, it gave me a bad stomach and made my urine very yellowish. Somebody advised me to make use of a kalamansi (lemon) for my cough and runny nose because for sure, the reason why I got fever was those illnesses. So, I took the advise, I sliced a number of lemon every after lunch and dinner. Now, I am feeling better and my fever was gone. You? Are you positive enough with the idea of using alternative medicines?

Yes, I do take alternative medicines. Unless I get very sick. Then I am in to see the doctor and get a prescription. But I do take achinacea, camomile, and many herbs and such. My mother used to fix whiskey, hot water and lemon for my colds. Made me sleep and that is good in itself.

YEAH...to natural meds! I first run the gamut of every "natural" med...suggested before I support "BIG PHARMA!" Honey, Garlic, Lemon for the common cold...Ginger, for upset stomach that accompanies the flu! Ginger tea (fresh ginger) works miracles for me! And for me, when the common cold hits with a vengeance...may or may NOT be true...but there is something so comforting (maybe just mentally) by a GOOD homemade Chicken soup! I suffer from severe digit arthritis...and my relief is natural; Cali carbonic and Rhus Toxi, both from Health food store. I, too, suffer when I take OTC meds, with stomach issues and "insomnia"! I grow and make a tincture of Echinacea for immune booster..and of course, Garlic is a staple in my diet, eaten with Parsley there is no lingering aroma! Last resort...Dr. or OTC!

For me, dear jdex_143 is being the master of my own destiny! When I opt for "natural remedies and cures" I know explicitly what I am ingesting, and what it is derived from! OTC..your guess is as good as mine! If I can't pronounce it..I don't want it!

Perga - I forget the reasons, but medical professionals have acknowledged the health benefits of chicken soup. I think part of it is that the heated liquid helps open up congested sinuses and chests, but also I think that the combination of vegetables with the protein of chicken gives nutrients in a more easily digestible fashion, so our bodies can use them to help our immune system fight the cold bacteria or flu virus.

I am really happy to know that there are still a lot of people who treats their illnesses the natural way despite of the diverging pharmaceutical products.. I like it because it is effective and for the fact that it is cheaper than the medicines bought from pharmacies..

My dear keep this in mind, synthetic medicine, those we buy in pharmacies will kill us in the long run. It will seem heal us but without us knowing it it is damaging our liver, our colon, our kidney and it will eventually lead to another sickness. Never, ever resort to traditional synthetic medicine every time you feel sick. You can always cure colds and cough the natural way. If you start feeling there is something wrong in your throat and it is starting to to itch start taking warm water to kill the bacteria immediately before it gets worse. Also take lots of citrus fruits. Yes calamanci with honey is very good because calamanci has alkaline which will heal you. Raw pure honey is very good for cough and colds. Also apple cider vinegar. Just add a tablespoon in a small glass of water, add a spoonful of honey. Do it at least three times a day. Also make it a point to take lots of fruits and vegetables to boost your immune system and the most important is you should have regular 30 minutes work out. Brisk walking in the early morning is the best! This way you need not get sick and you need not take those synthetic medicine anymore.

Hmmm.. That's terrible. I suggest you try what I did. It's effective and Kalamansi is very rich in vitamin C which could boost our immune system.

I do not really think of them as "alternative medicines", but I will look to natural sources for relief of illness before getting regular medicines. When these do not work, though, then it is time to see a doctor. I think that there is a time and place for both "traditional" and "alternative" treatments, and neither one will work all of the time. Sometimes we can help our bodies to fight and build our immune systems through natural methods, but I also think that there are times when "traditional" medicines are necessary, and I have seen people end up in the hospital when they tried for too long to treat it themselves without consulting a physician and getting the proper medical care.

Your rationale has got my vote! I am, albeit, reluctant to go trotting off to the Dr. (like so many I know)without testing my own resources...but do admit, some things are not treatable without Dr.'s ! And the Chicken Soup legend, yes...they have given it the accolades it deserves and I do remember being shocked...that there is something specific in the FAT...yes, the fat that was a big part of the benefits! Since then, I have NOT chilled and skimmed the fat off completely! But you know, I must admit...there are times that I have resorted to a "hot toddy" over "Sinus Cold and Flu", etc.!

I understand the reluctance to go "trotting of to the doctor", and actually our doctors do not automatically prescribe medication like so many do these days, which is one of the reasons that I really like them. Instead, they make sure that we have tried all the alternatives they think appropriate, and sometimes they still say we are doing everything we can at the moment and that we have to "watch and wait". That is how I know that if they prescribe medication, then it is really necessary. As for the "hot toddy", my grandmother swore by that cure, and it did work most of the time. Now that you mention it, I do think that I remember that homemade chicken soup is better than the canned soup, but I thought that was just due to the fact that there are more artificial additives in the canned soups and the homemade ones are natural.

I have implicit faith in homoeopathy and have read several books and now with help from the Internet handle most ailments successfully. I also have faith in Aloe vera a herb is good for so many things including teeth. My holistic approach to health which also includes Reiki helps me a lot. I do resort to allopathy for immediate relief but simultaneously continue with the alternative approach.

Oh, really? Aloe vera is good for our teeth also? How to use it? Because, what I know is that aloe vera is good for our hair. It will make our hair shiny.. Thanks for this new info. This is the reason why I can't resist on visiting mylot. Aside from the fact that I am enjoying, the most important thing is that I am learning from everyone here.

Aloe vera has several benefits and is available in various forms marketed by many companies. I used to drink aloe vera juice but now I have my own plants. If I have a tooth ache I simply cut a leaf and rub it on my teeth. For more on aloe vera you can visit: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/07/090717150300.htm

Yes, I will always take alternative medicine when sick before conventional medicine. However, I feel the best thing to do is to avoid getting sick in the first place. I always make sure that I eat healthy organic foods with plenty of vegetables - not too much fruit because it contains fruit sugar that has been proved that too much is not good. In the summer time, I make sure I get plenty of sun, but don't let myself burn. Getting a little browner is fine, but I get into it very slowly. This provides vitamin D which is proving more and more to be a great protection against colds, flu and some research even suggests cancer protection. IN the winter time, I take a Vitamin D supplement to ensure that I have enough protection because here in the UK, the sun if very weak in the winter and provides little or no vitamin D at all. I find that I rarely get colds/flu and feel quite healthy. I also practice meditation every day to reduce stress, as stress is also another problem for health. I read a lot of articles and reviews on Mercola.com. Dr Mercola is a doctor who is a little different from most other doctors and provides a lot of advice in getting and maintaining good health. _Derek

Yes, I do agree with you. Everyone must avoid getting sick. But there are times that even how you take care of yourself, you still get sick. We can't control the capacity of our immune system. For me, alternative medicine is a good choice. It's effective. It's nice that you are making use of the natural source of vitamin D. I should say, keep it up. Let's all get healthy.

Hi jdex: I have to say that I have took some of these alternative medicines and some of the actually work. But I have took good care when I chose them. I look for reliable sources that explain me how exactly these alternative medicines work and I need to be sure that this won't have a negative effect on me. ALVARO

Same here.. I don't want to go the doctor when I'm feeling sick. That's why I do all the possible things I can just to feel well. I boost myself up like dictating my entire body to be strong. They say, the power of our subconscious mind is very powerful.

I never had my sickness treated by a doctor because I have this fear of being in the hospital. So, basically when I feel sick, generic medicines are the immediate response, parallel it with alternatives, especially the herbal ones. I find it more effective actually than these tablets and capsules available in the market.

I'll try herbal remedies first. For instance, I have never found anything that beats gargling with cayenne pepper for a sore throat. If it isn't strep throat it can be cured in an hour- just two gargles with a teaspoon in very warm or hot water. I'm always on the lookout for other working herbal cures as well. I think it's amazing that spices can cure physical problems.
