Today, after over a year, and having lived here for nearly 27 years, the house is in my name! My sister signed the Quit Claim, I took it to the Tax office and paid my money and it is mine! I'm excited! I don't know about other people, but I'm glad that's one less thing hanging over me. I want to have a mortgage burning party, but actually I paid the mortgage off just after the first of the year... So, I'm a proud first time home owner of a paid off house!

When my Grandpa and Grandma paid off their mortgage they bought a (small) CANNON and STUFFED THE MORTGAGE PAPERS INSIDE IT AND LIT THE FUSE. CONFETTI EVERYWHERE. We all had a BIG PARTY that day. Would you like to REALLY SEND THAT MORTGAGE OFF WITH A BIG BANG? This way could be a lot of fun.

That does sound like fun, but I kind of have a feeling that the City might frown on it these days... even tho it has pretty much dripped the last 4 days, we are still in a drought!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Wow! That is the most awesome thing I've heard in quite awhile! I'm soooooooooooo happy for you! Not many people can actually claim that. I can't! I've never owned a house long enough to pay off the mortgage. I do own that other house but I bought it really cheap and paid cash so never had a mortgage nor the thrill of paying it off. Wow! Yeah, I think you need to have a mortgage burning party. Isn't that sort of an officially unoffical thing to do when a mortgage is paid off? If you decide to have that party, take photos!

Oh, I'm sure there will be photos! but we'll kind of have to make up faux mortgage papers since I never had any!

Well, I'll never tell! I think the symbolism of it will feel great, no more owing anybody! Well, okay, we never stop owing those danged property taxes but to not worry about the next "mortgage" payment and know that your home is YOURS, that's awesome!

Yay! let us have a virtual bonfire. Every one of those bills we pay off just make things feel so great, and make us feel free.

wow ElicBxn congratulations as that a real biggie,.I can just imagine how relieved and happy you are to be the proud first time owner of a paid up house.I think back to when we sold our last house and how if we had just hung on we would have had it paid off, and i am sure our lives would have been so much better.but second guessing years after the fact does no good.i am a widow now and things will be better I think in this coming year.so now you are the owner. that has to be such a relief to have it in your name. good for you.

I have lived here since 1984 and I paid it off in January last year. My brother and sister have had several houses over the years, but I've been in one place for most of that time -right here!

That sounds really nice! How did you pay off the mortgage in just one year? I take it part of it was because you lived there so long. Were you paying rent the entire time or what? I would give anything to know that I owned something that I could live in other than my car (not that I would want to live in a car). Take good care of it! Have a good week!!!

Good for you !You finally have had your own real estate.I can well imagine you surely felt as if relieved of a heavy load at the time when you paid the mortgage off.I have no idea what the mortgage burning party is.If it is a party in celebration of your paying off mortgage.

Yes, it is a party to celebrate owning your own home. The house has actually been paid off since January of last year, but we only just got it into my name when my sister came to town last week.

The house was in my mother's name and my sister was the executor of her will, so she had to sign the quit claim to get the name changed.

I guess you couldn't change the name of owner in the register until your sister made quitting claim.

I've lived in this house for nearly 28 years, so I pretty much know all the neighbors I want to know - if I have a party - it won't be at the house, because of the cats and dogs...

Congratulations! I understand the excitement that you feel. When I had the closing on my house I had a champagne christening in which I broke a bottle of champagne against the side of the house. Enjoy!

I wouldn't do that - not just that it would waste some champagne, but then I'd have to wash it off! I'll just continue to live here quietly like I have been the last nearly 28 years (recounted and came up with the correct number) but I can now say I'm a home OWNER and not a renter!

I'm so glad this worked out for you. So many times dealing with family doesn't go so smooth. Of course I don;t know the details of this affair and they are none of my business, but it seems like your situation has worked out right. For that I am glad for you.

There probably would've been an issue if my brother had been involved, but since it was my sister everything worked out. Fact is, that is WHY my sister was the executor of the will.

The house had been in my mother's name, so there's this legal document that changes the name of owner. My sister as the executor of my mom's estate had to sign this and we had to have it notarized, then all that was needed to do was take it to the property tax office and file it.

Oh, I know the feeling. Isn't it wonderful? Although my homes have always been mobile homes and run down there is nothing like knowing that it's all mine and I can do with it what I want. I've never had a mortgage to pay but always managed to pay for everything up front in cash. Still, I have had debts that I paid off after many years so I know that relief. Congratulations my friend! May your mortgage burn bright. Enjoy doing the Snoopy Dance around the fire!

Congratulations! This a great achievement and you deserve to have a huge party. I'm also owner of an apartment but I've inherited it. I've never been able to buy a property in my life. So I admire you for what you have done. I wish you many happy days and, why not, some bonus for what you have done.
