From trainging as an assistant manager to laid off in one weekend.

My daughter had the weekend off so she came up for a visit. When she went home & stopped by the shop to check the schedule she & several of the other employees weren't on it. Apparently the company had decided to lay them all off. That's just cold. I understand things slowing down after the holidays but going from training for middle management to "We don't need you" overnight with no warning is plain rough. Now she'll be back looking for work again. Of course if the company's willing to do something like this it's probably a good thing she hadn't gotten herself too attached to them. It's nice to see a corporation treat they're employees so well, NOT

That's an awful way to find out you have no job. The least they could do is send her an email before they make out the schedule. Her manager or supervisor should have told her, not let her find out by looking at the schedule. People are becoming less and less important, it seems. I hope she finds something else very soon!

I do to. I don't know how she'll pay for next semester in college if she doesn't.

I don't know what line of work your daughter is in but hopefully there are other opportunities available to her within the local area. Is the layoff a tempororary arrangement or someting more permanent?

I don't know exactly but in all likelyness she'll have to find something else before they call her back if it's temporary. People can't afford to be jobless & wait hoping for that call. Where she's living there's probably an overabundance of people in the work force so it'll probably be a bit difficult for her to find another.

I quite agree with you. These days money is in short supply everywhere it seems. The only other thing I could suggest would be to consider training or perhaps a college placement to open employment doors but I realise that both of these suggestions have financial implications. I wish your daughter the best of luck but you do worry for them don't you?

That's horrible. It is wrong and cold for them to get laid off while they were training but I do hope she is able to find something better. This country is just going down the toilet. Even though they keep saying it's getting better it just doesn't seem like it. All the luck to you and your daughter.

I know, from this end it doesn't seem to be improving much but from THEIR perspective it is.

Sounds like she'd been working for them for some time. In my country (UK) employers have to pay redundancy in situations like this.

She'd been there about half a year & had proven herself to be a far more capable employee than most of the others there. I think you have to have worked a full year before you can claim unemployment in the U.S..

Yes, I'm not sure what the minimum term is in the UK, but I think half a year is rather long for a probationary period.

Oh that's really sad! And how bad it could be to learn one day that you're getting laid off. I've been in a situation where the company suddenly shuts down its operation. I'm already done with the contract but was waiting for something from them. While my colleagues who was still working there was so shocked to know that they don't have any office to go to anymore. It's not really easy being unprepared losing a job. Hope she can find a new one easily.

First time in my life i hear something so cruel and cold.Today people tend to get more and more materialists without trace of decency and humanity.Only the profit have in mind without care of other's feelings.Your daughter should not worry about these people and the job she lost because it is not worth it.

She might not worry about that particular job but now she's having to worry about finding another & making ends meet.

I know this feeling of trying to find a job and the insecurity someone has until finds it. Today is much more difficult to find a real good job due to the increased unemployment. I wish your daughter the very best luck and tell her to try to be optimistic about this.

That's just cold. Not to mention nasty. Even if they're firing, don't they need to give time for the employees to find another job? Don't they realized how hard to find a job these days? They just ruin their reputation by doing something like this. If they're starting a business again, people might considered not to work in a company with such history.
