http://www.scribd.com/doc/13021868/100-Famous-Classic-Books Here's a list of the top 100 rated fiction books (In English..) It was posted on the BBC's site with a note that most people might have only read about 6 of them...What do you think of this list? Would you agree that it's a fair list,or not? Would how many of them you've read (or not!) surprise you? The list is also available as a facebook app so you can compare notes with your FB Friends!

Finding James Joyce, Enid Blyton, Dickens and Tolkien in the same list makes a strange melting pot. The only 20th French book is a book for children, though French writers are more represented than Italian, completely absent from this list : I can understand that Dante was forgotten, but Sean Connery was great in The Name of the Rose based on Umberto Eco's book. Maybe not so silly : is this a list of the "top 100 rated fiction books" or of the "top 99 -- sorry, but I would exclude the Bible -- fiction books adapted into films"? Are the readers real readers or moviegoers?

Is the French children's book you are referring to "The Little Prince"? I read that in English, but I was told that it was better in the original French version. Unfortunately, I can't read French, so I would need someone to translate it for me.

Yes I was speaking of The Little Prince. I can't say if it is better in French, because I never read it in English. You have already a lamb among your friends : I can draw you a sheep if he feels alone.

LOL! Perhaps you should read the English version, and then give me a critique of it. Also, you could volunteer to read me the French version ... with the translation, of course ... so I can tell you whether or not I agree.

I know for sure that I read fourteen of those books, and I believe that I have read more but I am not 100% sure so I didn't count them. I have also seen movies about several more that I never read the books for ... does that count for anything? I loved the movie "Sense and Sensibility", but I never read the book. This is one of the rare instances where I do not think that the book could live up to the movie, though. I might be a little bit prejudice, however, since I love Alan Rickman and think he was great in the movie ... although I can't remember a movie I have seen him in when I did not think he was great.

I'm not familiar with that one-the only thing is,that sounds like a non-fiction title when this discussion is about the top 100 fiction books...

I've read about a dozen or so, and have no interest in the majority of them. Somebody would have to give me vast amounts of money to sit and read the like of Shakespeare, War and Peace or the Bible for fun.
