i usually get into people who says "I did not finish college but look at me, i am making a good living and look at them who hold diploma on their hands, they barely survive the day". we see many degree holder that are not employed or under employed but ironically, we want to send our kids to the best school in town even if we pay more than what we can afford. Do you think getting a degree really guarantee a good job or future?

In this day and age, there is no longer a guarantee to everything. Even the saying "go to school, get a good grade, and get a secure job" is no longer true. There may be companies that take workers for their grades but there are also some who takes workers with experience. And besides, there is no secure job anymore, where every event that happens not only in our life but also at work is very fast. It is true that one moment you are employed, the next you are fired. What will you have the person do? Get a new job? Is getting a job really all that comes into your minds as a good source of income? I really applaud those people who didn't finish school yet are having a good life. Because they've known how to manage their money. Their financial literacy is very good. I wonder why some degree holders don't know what they knew...

exactly, there is no job security. then school should teach how to manage life rather than teaching skills for future job.

Eunife, your comment reminded me of a related comment I heard that said that our education system teaches and prepares us to be an employee. A wrong mindset the comment asserted. Instead, the education system should teach us how to be an entrepreneur and manage a personal business.

The education system and the mindset of people concerning education are very hard to change. Many people still believe in the traditional education system and basically, the traditional way of making a living. Many people prefer to be employees since it is a very stable, and comfortable job - most because of routine. However, not everybody have the attitude or the inclination of being an employee. Many people still think of business as risky ventures and they think of money loss before profit earning. It is sad that this type of mindset is very prevalent even though they are many options to make money and earn a living.

hi eunife, I think that having a good job is a combination of luck, determination, skills and prayers. Even if one person completed his degree but do not work on having a job, then having a degree won't make sense. However, if a person completed a degree and use the best of his knowledge and skills to have a job, then it is good. After I graduated from high school, I took up a 2 year course program but when I finished the course and already seeking the job, it was really hard for me. That was why I decided to take up a 4 year degree course because I think, I can have a job easier after I graduated from a 4 year degree course. With the help of God, I did not find any difficulties finding a job after I graduated from my course. Now, I am taking up a Masters Degree for promotional purposes. Completing my bachelor degree and my Masters Degree for sure will give me a lot of benefits.

The degree is not that important. It is what the degree is in and how well you can sell yourself that count. I know people who are frustrated because they got a BS degree in one of the "Studies" areas and spent four or more years and tens of thousands of dollars only to find out the degree, while you learned a lot does them no good in getting a job unless they pursue a Masters and PHd degree in the field and then get a job teaching in college. I know others who have earned a a business or financial area and were able to get entry level jobs with companies, often times sales positions. My son received an engineering degree and has hat three interviews and two job offers and the job offers came from companies that searched him out. His friends that have gotten jobs with their degrees (2 and 4 year degrees) have also been willing to move several hundred miles from home. Something to consider - look at the programs offered by Vocational or Technical Colleges. Our local Tech School is putting out people in two years that are starting at the low to mid $40,000. The Tech College cost them under $10,000 for tuition and room and board.

It is not having a degree or not having a degree. It is what is the degree is in. One lady called the radio station to complain about having a degree and not able to get a job. Her degree was in Classical Languages, while interesting not many jobs require this background. My son has a degree in Engineering and had two interviews and two job offers and both companies sought him out. It is important to check out what kind of work you can get with a degree before you start it.

I don't think it's a guarantee. If at best, the degree gets you to the door. Sadly, sometimes a degree will just become a criteria that you'll pass during a resume-check. Which means your resume wouldn't be put in the 'disregard' pile, and may be read by the actual HR manager. Anything after that all depends on the person.

Yes,I think so. Education always pays off. Even in difficult times like nowdays. It`s true that many people are making a good living without any degree, but I am sure they either have a good sence and tallent for business, or work with their hands wich is not easy at all. Well it`s a matter of personal skills, discipline, abilities, and a li-i-tle/:)/bit of good luck too.

Absolutely not. There is no such thing as a "guarantee" in life. I've seen more than my share of people with degrees working garbage jobs. Can a degree help you get a job? Yes. But the key word is "help". It may help to have a degree, but that doesn't promise you anything. The only chance anyone has of getting a good job is to show yourself valuable to someone else. You have to make yourself useful, and prove your worth. A bit of paper with your name on it, doesn't prove that. Only you, working and doing useful things, proves you are useful.

getting degree is the extra thing to get job. Till now jobs are based on degrees only. You may get good reputation for your knowledge, eventhough you are not a degree holder. But there is always some criteria and our degrees and certificates are the entry points to get into the jobs in this current generation.

I would say no getting a degree is not going to guarantee you a good, well paid job. I know people who have been to university yet are still in the job they were doing while they were there. With the financial climate being what it is there are not enough jobs to go around any way. It may help you move up in a company if you already have a job. The company I work for has a system where graduates can go on a fast track program into store management. But I also know a uni drop out who is now in a duty manger position. So I don't think it matters to much.

Hello eunife, Due to competition being so hard there is no guarantee that one would get a job after completing the degree too.I have seen lot of people who are degree holder but still unemployed but there are people too who are not that much qualified but still are making good money so that is luck, hard work, knowledge about specific field. That's true educating child in good school don't have the guarantee that he/she will get a good job but still there are more chances that he/she will get after getting education from good institutes therefore parents send them there.

I think having a degree is a plus but there are some cases and some people who have a nice work and kind of living without having a degree. Some undergrad get a better job and have a better living due to there determination, hard work and talent.Sometimes luck helps too. But in the end,it will be based on the person on how he handle their lives.

I want to tell you a real life story about two boys that I witnessed.. so there were two friends J and P. J was very good student..he completed school then went to college finished degree and then applied for masters and went to London.. after 5 years today J is working in a very big farm and earns about $2000 a month.. On the other hand P was always a poor student.. In school he failed many exams and after so many efforts finally got into college.. But he could not last there for more than 2 years and got terminated form college...... Then A pause..... after 5 years today P is the owner of a huge textile company and earns more than $1 million per month.. They said he was not good at study or had any goals or ambitions in life.. So how could he do all this.. Well they also say that P saw dreams.. In those days of life when other children fought and competed with each other in order to succeed in the job-jungle, P saw dreams. Dreams of doing something different and thinking out of the box and as a result he is at the top today. So see the moral of this story is how will we do in life that completely depends on how we are thinking about it.. Education is necessary and I am not at all against it, but in order to really succeed in life one really does not need any degree or certificates.. All one needs is the Education of life... This is a true story and I hope it has surely inspired you.. Thnx..

For me, my answer no. Even you have graduated in a good school with flying colors, its still depend on the person itself on how he can get a job. There are lots of graduates today that cannot find a job because of lack of jobs in a certain country. Sometimes it depends on what field or course you take. Finding a job is really depends on the ability of the person.

In the Philippines, it is not working anymore, a lot of professionals who are jobless right now.what we have here is technical jobs ( local or abroad). So, i think we should be more practical in choosing course in college.

Hi Eunife, today to have a degree or a diploma is more important of sometime ago and this is because job opportunities are less out there and in some fields the higher instructions the better. Today to have a master in engineering, architecture or design is a lot better than just the simple BS or Diploma. In my job when we hire someone we look first at his/her diploma, if there is also a Master diploma or equivalent, and portfolio. All people coming from 2 years school or evening specialized courses do not enter in our company which is biiiiig one! What I am trying to say is that the job market needs to be better quality and more specialized and this starts from good schools.

Hi there, It really would be depends on the situation,as what you've said that many who were able to finish a course was unemployed. In some other other countries, especially Phil. to finish a degree is really a big thing, so that we can a white-collar job in the future. But it really will be depends on how we deal things especially we will talk about hard working and loving one's job. What's the use of having a degree if it's not being use. And if being work on, not giving a 100 percent effort , loving ones work really matters so that you will be successful and be contented.
