I Know Sh!t Happens But Why Does It Always Have To Happen To Us?

If I didn't laugh I'd cry at the moment. It's the only way of dealing with life in general, isn't it? Laugh at all the sh!t currently happening on a daily basis. To be honest, I've never been a big fan of January. It takes an absolute AGE for January to get out of the way..then the rest of the year flies! Ever noticed that? Apart from the roof needing repairs (hopefully, on Saturday), the Sky+ HD digibox needing an Engineer to look at it (Sunday morning), John's car having yet another repair done, a crack appearing in an interior wall to go with the loads we have already..everything is brilliant! Have you noticed that stuff always goes wrong when you're skint? Nothing EVER goes wrong when you're not short of money. Oh well, at least we've only a few more days left until February is upon us..commonly referred to as Suicide Month in the UK.

Ricky Gervais (and I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but he does love animals) once said that he makes sure he laughs every single day. It helps when he surrounds himself with like-minded people but I know what he's getting at and he's right too.

hi Janey in my now broken little family we called it the domino effect. you know how some can line angled dominos then hit the first one which falls over and so the ripple goes all down the lines until all the dominoes are toppled. well it makes quite a sight. but when one life is turned upside down the domino effect makes you cringe as each unpleasant little happening hits another one. picture two people looking at a house all packed up and ready to move or go in storage. then your son comes in and tell you {"Mom I hired a too small truck to take our stuff to the storage. He looked at me, with tears in his eyes" oh God I did not order a large eno ugh storage area." okay we had already had the first do mino, he was laid off, the second we ran iout of money and were served eviction notice. now we could not get all our stuff in storage and we hbad to out b y midnight that night. so our friends rallyed and took all they could to put in storage in their homes.then the fact we had no place to go to when my son called an internet friend who did live here in California so she said she had five bedrooms come on over you can stayh with uhs. okay for ten daywhile my son negotatied with the lady in England who said she wou ld sponsor us to an apt for three months in Antioch cal.but on my birthday we had had to move from the internet friend as her ho use sold out from under.we went back to stay with a friend and learned the final domino had fallen. the lady from England Claire called the apt complex manager and told him the deal was off. so we were now truly homeless. that was three years ago . we still are homeless in the middle class way of a no house or an apart, emt but I have a room here in the retirement center takes most all of my social security and ssi but I am not in the street at least. my son is in a rooming house with three room mates but he is just a few miles away. and he has a job not part time but not quite full time but a job doing what he has been trained for computer programming. so we are okay for now but when bad things happened,it seems they trigger others until you are overwhelmed, or you fight back and you survive.Janey like us you and hubby will survive you know that in spite of everything some of us are survivors and we will rise again.good luck and will pray things will get better and better for you both.

I tried replying to your response earlier (twice) and neither registered. I guess it was a MyLot glitch so 3rd time lucky, eh? Anyway, your story touched my heart, it really did. I also know how tough you and your son are (and pass him my good wishes when you see him by the way) and that has made me realise how strong WE are. Do you know what I mean? We may be down but we're definitely not out!

hi Hatley... This is the second time when after reading your post, I have shed tears... I feel sorry for you dear... You are the real survivor, you know.. At this age, you never gave up through so many troubles.. and I who is 65 years younger to you, has almost given it up all... I am glad to have a friend like you in my life... Thanks a lot!! Take care... May God bless you and give you infinite happiness forever... :)

I'm not sure if I could just laugh at that domino situation that you just described here , Hatley. It was a very hard situation emotionally and physically to deal with. I think we can all try to laugh just to feel better in every situation but the important thing is to go through it and learn from it for the future. If I was your friend , I would offer my help for you.

Hi Janey... I agree with you, things go wrong with us only when we are short of money. The troubles, they say, never come alone. They come together, hand in hand, to test our capability to survive; they say so... Sh!t happens only to those who are really struggling to make the both ends meet.. :( Unfair... sob...

You mentioned something about a car needing repairs... I was just thinking the same about my van. If there was some mechanical sh!t to happen about cars, it would surely happen to my van. I just paid $2200 to get the transmission fixed just over a month ago, and now the brakes are acting up. And it isn't really a surprise that it's happening this January when most of the money has already been allocated to bills.

Is it an old van? Vehicles are so expensive to actually keep on the road these days..and that's before anything goes wrong with them. I do sympathise.

That is they things happen. When it rains it pours. I know the feeling all to well, believe me. I just wish, just once things would go right for me. But I guess I am not one of the lucky ones. Getting upset is not they way to go. You have to stay as calm as possible. I have learned that staying calm and dealing with one thing at a time, things actually do get done easier. I know money is tight, so you would have to pick the one thing that is the worst and take care of that one. The others will fall into place. I hate January and February.

I'm so relieved my birthday is in March. I don't think I could stand having a birthday in January or February although I suppose it would be something to look forward to. I'm a lot calmer than I was, thanks. You're right, getting worked up doesn't help and a good cry was what I needed (on Sunday) and everything feels much better now. I think I'd been bottling a lot of things up (which, I know isn't good) and to let it all out in a bloody good crying session felt great, perversely. Oh, and John was there giving me a hug. He could so easily have ignored it and not bothered seeing how I was, but he made a point of letting me know that everything was going to be alright and that I should never worry about not having any money of my own. I have a LOT to be thankful for.

Nope "Love of money is the root of all evil." I do not love money, but I do need it. I plan to put any taxes we get back to debt reduction, but if I was not doing that, I would insist that it go to savings. I should have done this in the past. I have put my bonuses in savings in the past and they have saved my bacon. When I was not working I did not have bonuses so did not get a fund built up.

I put aside money each week for my budget and that includes household and car repairs and maintenance. I'm on a very low income and I simply could not manage big bills otherwise. Trouble is, I don't have much of a life...

We don't either but it's better than a lot of people which - in turn, makes me feel guilty. Not well off by any means but all we've done is sacrificed going to the football, that type of thing, in order to save money.

nah it happens to me too :) only they don't worry me anymore as I have learned to just deal with them the best I can. sometimes people understand I don't have much money they surprise me when I pay and not charged interest very true, nothing ever goes wrong when we have money. in fact people are kind when we do. but when we don't and need help, they mock.

In real life, there are indeed some things hard to explain.Sometimes,"It never rains but it pours";sometimes ,"nothing succeeds like success."I think it is a fortuitous phenomena and has nothing to do with month.May good luck be yours soon.By your leave,I like January, because the Spring Festival also called Chinese New Year usually falls on this month. It is the season when whole family is reunited. We all feel the day went quickly.

Yep stuff happens alright. Although, for me, January has flown by. We are almost at the end of it now and it seems like it just got here for me. Stuff is happening here too… we need a $3,000 septic line put in to our property because the one that is there is broken. It was put in in 1971, so it’s really old. The only good thing is that we don’t have to pay for it. The landlord does. The landlord is family so it is on them… Not sure when it will get done, but we have been having lots of problems.

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but what is a septic line? Is it something to do with waste?

Yes, in the country we don't have sewers.. we have individual septic tanks and they have to be sucked out by a septic truck every so often. Well, when it rains a lot here it fills up the septic line... it's $300 to get it sucked out. This time the man came to do it and saw that it is broken... so he contacted the Department of Health... so they came out and we have to have a new line put in and hopefully it will be bigger than the one we have. When you flush the toilet it goes into this tank.

I really like laughing , it is healthy to do and we can do a favour to ourselves if we laugh everyday and have some fun , or even when things are not fun at all. About the shift that happens to us when we are skint , I heard a professional financial adviser say that there are no surprises in life : every once in a year or two we need to fix the car and spend thousands of dollars on it , many people get a medical issue that they have to spend a lot of money on it. We don't know when will it happen but the chance is high that it will happen so our budget must include those expansive situations too. I think he is right and we always have to save money for surprises.

this can be true for me as well. I really feel disappointed when you already thought of a solution to solve your current problems then all of a sudden, that solution would gone to waste. Too bad. You will think life is unfair but hey, that's what make life worth living. it would really depend on how you will handle it.

God will not give us problems we can't take. It's a challenge for us. :) As for my case, I'm 6 months pregnant. OB told me that it is a high-risk pregnancy, I have prenatal previa and a high blood sugar. I'm even 24 yrs old. I questioned God before, he gave this kid to me, why won't he give it 100% okay & healthy? But when I talked to my OB whom is also a Christian, she told me that it's not right to question God, all pains and sacrifices should be accepted as a challenge. GOd knows what we can handle. That really cleared my mind. Now, I'm laying up everything to Him. I know what he's giving me now is something I can cherish of and I know in return, all of these will be worth it. :) Cheers!

I used to always have issues with February, for such a short month it seemed to drag. We actually have issues year round, and if we have an emergency fund, the house figures it out and eats it. I have yet to find a money tree that will take care of all those emergencies.

I know what you mean about January being a bad month. I was really hoping that this year would be the year that things will look better for my husband and I. Well, was I ever wrong. On January 1st my husband's foot was swollen and we went to the VA hospital thinking that we were going to be given a cane. Well, it turns out that my husband has a serious foot condition called Charot's foot and has very weak bones. He is also Type 2 diabetic. With his foot being seriously hurt he is unable to work and is wheel chair bound. I am taking care of him full time because he cannot take care of himself. My mother is pressuring me to hire a nurse (which we do not have the money for) so I can work full time and pay her debt. I have my own debt to pay and I feel I already do more than my fair share. I cook three days a week and I also pay the heat bill. I also buy food. I wish you the best of luck.

I can so relate! Hubby is a self employed carpenter so, it's either feast or famine with us and this is the slow season. Oh, yea, I got served with papers the other day hubby is being sued for credit debts that he has been paying but I guess it wasn't fast enough. I just try to remember the saying that God doesn't give you more than you can handle. Or that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Although sometimes I think God has more faith in us than I do!
