Myson came to visit me last night. We got to talking about how our corporations were all outsourving work thus putting even more Americans out of work. We were then talking about where things were made. My son started picking things up at random. things I'assumed were made in America turned out to to be manufactured in China for the various corporations that were here in the US . Not made in America at all. I said well I know the new modem on my cable had to be made here. My son picked it u p and it even gave the city in China where it was manufactured. the only items I had that were made here in the US were my jar of peanut butter and my box of Special K crackers. wow what an eye opener. Your take my fellow mylotters.

Hmm, there is a bit hard to argue under this discussion though. On one hand, we need to create more jobs for domestic needs, on the other hand, there were full of people who doesn't want to work in the factory, rather, they want get paid through food stamp and other government benefit program. So, what would you think of it? I have seen people on the street asking for money while they are perfectly able to get a job somewhere. I am not defending those Corporate American outsourcing our jobs elsewhere, but look at our people, would they rather take on some menial jobs and pay for what they basic needs rather panhandling?

kingparker most people out of jobs are willing to take anything right now. those you see pan handling are the dregs of society and not worth much worry. to see men out of work with families to support is sickening to me when they could be working in our factories. And no just wait a moment here in my state for everyone 'wanting a job there are hundreds more and only one job Now you tell me what is a person to do, how does he or she feed his or her family, they do get food stamps as they cannot help themselves until there are as many jobs as people out of work. I would never and have never panhandled in my life but for awhile when the hours were cut back on my job I had to take food stamps. and yes I was working and at age 79 too. you cannot tell me all p eople are panhandlers. I have had a few more years experience than you young one.

I do agree that there are people who are totally fine, yet take government aid. But not every bagger/homeless person in America asks for money from people just because it is their habit. I used to think exactly like you until I came across three comments under an Yahoo article. Those comments were from men who were really were homeless. One of them explained that he was a white collar person with a nice permanent job. Suddenly, his company ended up with loss and he was told to leave. He tried his best to get a job elsewhere, but it was of no avail. At one point, whatever he saved and unemployment benefit ran out. He could no more afford the rent of his apartment and soon he lost it too. Then came the day when he "lived" in his car and sometimes begged for money. In between, he did try to get job, but employer wanted valid home address which he could not give. So yes, some homeless people who beg for money have a cruel story to tell. America is a capitalistic country where businesses have the freedom to take any decisions that they deem as right for themselves. Well-being of Americans comes last here. So instead of creating jobs which would cost them more dollars per hour they are preferring to get their outcome from overseas where they can pay a few cents to their workers. It is about time for the government to step in. By the way, not every job sent overseas is menial. Currently, even the graphic designing and American substation drawing jobs are being exported also.

Oh I know it, Hatley. I wouldn't even be surprised if your peanut butter were made in China. Some is you know. They outsource this work and pay the people a quarter of what they would have to pay us. I understand that it saves the corps. money but it puts Americans out of work. I think they should be required to hire so many Amaricans here for the same jobs they are outsourcing...a compromise so to speak. Those people count on those jobs too. The big companies are saving a ton of money by outsourcing but are they really passing those savings on to us? I'm not sure.

When you really start looking at things, it is just amazing at how much of our stuff is made elsewhere. I got looking at labels on some of my things. I have spices that are distributed out of RI but it does not say just where they are made. For all that these big corps are saving by outsourcing, I really haven't noticed the cost of any of our products going down ever. Have you? I don't know exactly what these people earn but I've heard it is way less than they'd have to pay us. I was told that call center people earn about 300.00 per month which is just craziness.

hi sid yes its so nutty.years back we manufactured most of the stuff we bought inour American stores now nothing in my room but two things were not made in China for the American companies. even my AT and T phone is made in you guessed it China. I know this is a touch thing as if they pulled out altogether then there would be huge unemp;loyment in China too.Your idea is what I would choose, keep some jobs for chinese but also gill a lot of jobs with Americans working for American factories. it could be done if only they were not quite so greedyl and in a lot of things I have noticed that the price is the same but the quantity of potato chips or corn chips is three or four ounces less. yet yuou are charged for a fu ll bag. not fair at all.

I learned a few years ago, if you want to buy something made in America, you have to do some research..Sad isn't it???

Problem is, that is the point..Even though the shipping is much cheaper than to have to purchase over seas, things in America are more expensive. I also try to purchase local produce, because it is healthier and puts money back into my community, but other places are flea markets or festivals, where local people make crafts and sell clothing and furniture. As for health and beauty products and electronics, that is where the research comes in and not all electronics are made here, plus like I said, it will be more expensive..

I have got so I can barely stand to look at the broccoli they cook here as they cook it to a dark green black mush.its strong and bitter. but its a veggie and I eat it. ughl

hi carm yes really it is sad. we used to buy American made goods mae in our country and never even thought to look at the label then the companies started becoming really greedy and outsourcing everything. the other sad thing is the Chinese workers are only making 64 cents an hour in the Chinese factories. I wish they would wake up and put Americans back to work for higher wages and charge a bit more and the quality would be like it used to be.

We were shopping the other day at a thrift store where I came across and old ice cream scoop. It is the one that most of the ice cream parlors used years ago and still use in some places. It has a button to push that pushes the ice cream out of the scoop. Well we bought it and when I got it in the car I decided to check out where it was made. I figured that it would have been made in the USA as my Mom had one while we were growing up, I also had one till it broke. Well it is sad to say it was not made in the United States. It was made in Tawain. So I would say that many products have been being made over seas for over 50 years or more. It is so very hard to find products that are made here in the states. If find if I do find something I would like that it is out of my price range.

The thing is, did the prices ever go down when they began outsourcing? I don't recall our costs on anything ever doing anything but getting higher and higher. Look at what these big companies are saving on labor! What do we make here in America any more? Not much. It's like pretty much everything in life, good & bad...moderation is key. I think initially outsourcing was a good thing. It helped out other countries and it helped our companies to save some on labor costs. Then somewhere along the way, it all went too far. I don't know about you guys but years ago when everything was made here, I was living far better than I am now.

hi MaryLynn I noticed that too if its made here they are going'to charge more. so outsourcing and cheaplabor mean we get cheap stuff at cheap prices and some of it is cheap quality too. I have found that the tops that I love to buy as they fit me so well are all 'made overseas but not in china but guatemala and places like'that. trinkets all are made in China. I wou ld love to buy american if I could have anythign made here that I am looking for,.but now it seems fruitless.

I agree with Sid. The prices have never gone down, they just keep getting higher and higher. The cost of living stays the same and the prices of everything just keep going up. That is why there are so many that are having financial problems. With the prices still going up. But, the wages stay the same.

The one thing that's opened my eyes more than anything else is the realisation that it isn't just the UK where practically everything is made in China. Not for the first time has an American mentioned the fact that a lot of their things are made in China that used to be made there. Roundabout me is my Microsoft (American Corporation right?) wireless keyboard and mouse, made in China. My Sony speakers and Compaq monitor are also made in China. Our Sky modem is made in China, it doesn't say where our landline telephone is made but I can guess.. Oh, and the Airwick Freshmatic has "Made in China" on the back of it. At least our television is made in..er...Slovakia but I know we used to have a fairly healthy television manufacturing base here in the UK. Because of our demand for higher wages (which is our right, in my opinion) the likes of China has stepped in. I do think there will be an uprising in China eventually because the workers will realise that being paid a pittance isn't good. Then we may get a situation whereby each country is self-sufficient in their own goods and services. Oh, well, I can dream can't I?

hi janey we loo9ked at my Samsung computer and it was manufactured in China for Japan and the Us market and my monitor also Samsung said the name of the city in China where it was manufactured. we have now outsourcef so many jobs in our major corporations that we have thrown many people out of work. we could not find much on the wages the poor chinese workers get except some factory workers were paid 64 to 74 cents an hour. unimaginable how greedy can our American corporations get and all the while there are hundreds for every job listed here in the US. why not have the big companies in America hire Americans.it is our country after all. Why must they make four hundred percent profit and mistreat Chinese workers at the same time. I want to see Americans get jobs again. We used to be number one now we are way below that. yes my mouse also was made in you guessed it China.

Yes, the cars were unreliable but if they made a comeback now I reckon they'd do really well. Well, at the least the tea I'm drinking is from a British made cup. Makes a change!

I was just having a discussion the other night with a friend about the number of items that are made overseas but sold in America. The only thing we could come up with is the wages overseas are so much cheaper than ours. I didn't realize that so much of our food is made overseas. Makes a person wonder.

hi velvet one day I wanted a treat so bought this colorful packet of candy on sale in Walmart. got home and ate one piece. oh my g my mouth was on fire and it was not from hot pepper but some chemical I spat the candy out and rinsed and rinsed my mouth. a lot of the outer tissue in my mo uth peeled off the next day. the rest of that candy wen into the trash and in such a way that nobody else would be tempted to open the bag ane eat a pice. I have no idea what was in it as the ingredients were all in Chinese.they are paying the Chinese workers in factories 64 to 74 cents an hour. thats just really criminal . why not be less greedy, put our Americans to wo k in our American factories and lessen the huge number of unemployed. I know people will make excuses but we used to manufacture stuff here in our own country hiring American workers. We used to be top dog but a communist China has bypassed us completely.

That is scary, Hatley. I wonder what was with that candy. It is a shame that the Americans can't figure out some way to give people jobs. Right now I know a lot of people who are without jobs and would gladly work for less than minimum wage if they had to. No wonder our country is the way it is.

Hatley, Please be careful about anything you eat but, especially foodstuff made in China. The reason I say this is because the manufacturers in China are not subject to the same STRINGENT INSPECTIONS that those here are subject to. LEAD in paint is one thing that comes to my mind. Pet food is another thing that I heard about a while back, too.

Hi Hatley, I can feel the same, that there are too many things around us are made from China. Someone have done an experiment try to live without any product made in China, he ended up have to take off everything including his last piece of clothes. So, imagine how many products are made in China, and how deep it penetrate into every countries in the world. Sometime, when a highly developed country also will have their side effect, the cost of living also increase, and of course people there will earn higher salary and that causes a higher labor cost and thus, that causes manufacture move to a cheaper labor cost country in order to get a higher profit margin. If you were to compare America and China, any manufacturer that targeted on profit will definitely choose China as their production base instead of America, where in China they might be able to get the profit margin as high as 30% and may be in America only 10%.

I don't care if the things that are around me are made in China as long as they are of good quality. But I'm afraid some of them are of poor quality. They are made only for profit, without taking care of the quality and the satisfaction of the client. What amuses me is the label on the Chinese products. I bought some socks made in China and their label said they were made from 100% cotton and 5% polyamide.

hi octav1 I also have found a lot of stuff made in 'china is actually junk. I got a Christmas gift of an unusal shaped small clock'radio that takes two aa batteries. I put in the batteries and expected to see the time and hear the music it said would play.No way,no clock no music. I got the instructions then had to laugh; they were all written in Chinese. so now the cute egg shaped oddity sits in my drawer as so much junk. oh I love that one hundred per cent cotton and 5 percent polyamide now thats really interesting.] but I do have an led monitor that I love and its a SsmSung sent to the US from Japan but guess what manufactured in a large city in China. However the quality of this monitor is wonderful. I was shocked to find my AT and T landline phone was manufactured in China for AT and T USA. I really wi sh the big companies would cut back on outsourcing and use American labor.

The price was right and I just thought it was cute...no high expectations on it but I did expect it could at least take pictures! It was a camera, after all. Oh my lord...it didn't...did not could not do anything at all. I took it back and the lady told me that they sold a ton of them and 99% of them were being returned. I bought one of those stress relief balls for my daughter...the kind that you squeeze. We got into the car, she squeezed it and it poped open and a white powder substance filled my car. Hiya Hatley...I so agree with you...just TRY and find anything made in the USA...like duh? Seems we can't even make light bulbs anymore, not even one's under the American company GE. Then people wonder why so many people are unemployed here, when the jobs are being given overseas, especially China, and even when products ARE made in USA, perhaps the "parts" are made in China (like car parts) What's worse is that all too many products made in China are of inferior quality...the use of toxic paint for example for children's toys. I'm getting genuinely surprised when I pick up some product and it's actually made in America!

Most everything we have is made in another country. I was most surprised years ago when I was in an electronics class. Even the American brand televisions, when they were opened up, were entirely foreign made. We have been buyers instead of makers for a long time now. Hi Hatley.. Whoa..!! I guess many Americans will be pretty annoyed with this fact. I agree with you that most of the products we use are from countries like China, Korea, Japan, India or Taiwan. I'll take this as an opportunity to disclose some facts which may help in changing peoples point of view about outsourcing. I read an article about conversation between Obama and Apple's CEO Steve Jobs when the President joined the Silicon valley luminaries for dinner. The following is an excerpt from that article. The heading of the article being "How the US lost out on doing iPhone work" Yes the iphone you use is also NOT a complete made in America product. About 70 million iPhones, 30 million iPads and 59 million other products Apple sold last year were manufactured overseas. Why can't that work come back home? Obama asked. Steve's reply was unambiguous. "Those jobs aren't coming back" he said, according to one of the dinner guests. He gave his reasons as- "It isn't just that workers are cheaper abroad. Rather Apple's executives believe the vast scale of overseas factories as well as the flexibility, diligence and industrial skills of foreign workers have so outpaced their American counterpart that 'Made n USA' is no longer a viable option for most Apple products". Apple's executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option. One former executive described how the company relied in a Chinese factory to revamp the iPhone manufacturing just weeks before the device was due on shelves. Apple had made a last minute change in the design of the screen, forcing an assembly line overhaul. New screen began arriving the plant near midnight. A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workmen inside the company's dormitories, gave them a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided them to workstation and within half an hour started a 12 hour shift fitting screens into beveled frames. In 96 hours, the plant was producing 10,000 iPhones a day. The executive said "The speed and the flexibility is breath taking and there's no American plant that can match that". If its wasn't for outsourcing, those products we use on daily basis wouldn't have been that cheap. We commoners do complain about the policies companies are adopting to withstand the cut throat competition but the fact is that we don't have even the slightest idea about "How to run a company in the current market scenario". I hope you get what I want to communicate...

hi himzey interesting but I just cannot believe that here in my own country we do not have just as skilled workers. also why must they make 500 to 600 percent profit ,. why not hire Americans and pay decent wages and mark up the products a little? There are few jobs here in California and hundreds out of wor ks for each damn job. Also these big corps also did not tell you that they pay tho0se chinese workers the huge sum of 64 cents an hour~!! Slave wages. they should be ashamed of themselves. I would much rather pay a l ittle more and get the better quality products we used to have from A merican made goods.I do not know how to run a compnay but IU do know greed is the driving factor and that I wou ld be ashamed to hire people at 64 cents an hour in this year of 20012. thats just horrible.

See... thats the difference. The asking rate of American workers is much high as compared to the quality of service they deliver. Chinese goods have low quality because of the price difference factor involved. They offer same features although with a low quality. The price difference keeps them alive in the market. Whereas if they compete delivering the same quality they may even not be able to cover up the manufacturing cost cause there are thousands of people who'd prefer Made in USA. Chinese and Indian workers just want sufficient amount to feed their families and fulfill a few basic needs of theirs. They dont care about lavish lifestyles since they have spent their earlier years in poverty spending sleepless nights without having even a grain of food.. so even a cent is like a gold coin for them and having been to foreign country is like a lifetime achievement. The condition is such that these companies who are paying them 64 cents an hour can't organize a charity for them by paying more than that. Cause if they do the other factories offering 80 cents an hour will take the lead. There are many small emerging companies trying to make a stand for themselves and searching for cheap labor. Situations are really different outside America and we don't blame them for not understanding our condition. They haven't been in any like ours. There are thousands of bright young graduates who never make it to any company because of the cut throat competition, compared to number of Americans who have been sacked. The ratio might be 1 sacked American to 5 Jobless graduates in other countries. Its not that they don't have talent..believe me, that they do have in plenty but its just that there isn't any job for them. So they end up accepting a bloodsucking job even for a mere wage of about Rs $400 a month. This makes labor cheap in other countries and is reason why outsourcing is a better option of most of the companies.

dear Hatley, This is true. Even Chocolate products are made from China :( I remember my younger days- shopping and going to imported section where chocolates are made from US. Now,I can hardly find any :( Where are all the US companies gone? Transported to China?

hi jaiho the American companies are still here bu t not using American workers, they outsource the jobs overseas to C hina' and we get stuff at cheaper prices and frankly some of it is pure crap.but if I w eere made to work 16 hours straight for 64 cents an hour I would probably not do my best work either which is what they are doing to the chinese laborers in their factories. this is to me obscene. we now have the second highest rate unemployed in the US Newyork state is first, and our California is second.

There was a comic strip that I saw years ago where the store owner decided to get rid of everything that was made in China. The result was that there was nothing but cobwebs on the shelves. Sadly, that seems to be the nature of the beast. It seems like everything is made in China and those things that are not made in China, are not in America. The glass I'm currently drinking milk out of right now for example is made in Thailand. Obviously that is going to be rather cheaper for corporations but it does seem to be more obvious. Just so many things made in other countries. The United States seems to make very little it turns out. The outsourcing of manufacturing has been obvious for many years and the outsourcing of other things is getting to be horrifying is well.

hi megamatt.,outsourcing has brought unemployment now to its highest ever. California ranks second highest in people unemployed with New York State the leader. our president and our government need to do something soon as families are floundering.it is no longer a joke but a serious problem here in American the u SA we need to put America people back to work in American factories making American goods. it c an be done but who is going to buck the big corporations who hold us captive in a way. they want profits that are obscene and pure greed. thus we get chinese made stuff that a lot of times is really poor quality materials.Slave labor at 64 cents an hour and sixteen hour days is nothing for American corporeations to be proud of.

Haaaa! I know! Can you imagine how expensive your modem would be if it were made in America? The US can outsource work at slave labor wages and makes everything WALMART cheap. I can't even talk to an American when I call customer service for our Internet service. We get somebody over in India. They go by scripts and can't really help you so when we go around in circles I ask to speak to an American and I guess I get switched back here. It's just dumb.

hi pointlessquestions I know as the same thing happened to me and I had to start over. wish we could get customer service here in the US instead.even time Warner here hires some people who have English as a second language and when I was asking how to reset my modem and router I had Gerta who spoke what I called Germenglish mostly German, so she goes pull out blah blah and I asked what did say and she goes right on pullout blah blah then blah blah it for a bla then put it back then wait one blah blah pull out blah blah wait blah blah then put it back in.I am going please please sp eak English and she gets huffy"madam blah blah English.,So I had to ask to have a repair man to come and reset my rou ter. He thank heavens was a fellow American . I told him about Gerta and then he quit scolding me and showed me how to do it if the power went off a gain. He did not charge me as Gerta had not made it clear what I was supposed to do.now i can do it easily as I know how.. I would buy American made stuff if I co uld afford it and find it even.
