Honestly, tho, its more than Tang and Teflon! There are so many real world applications that NASA as done for us that it is just WRONG that we aren't spending MORE money on it! http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/02/08/nasa-details-real-world-a_n_1261982.html?just_reloaded=1 I think my friends know I'm a big proponent of space travel and this just further reinforces my good opinion of the agency! So, what do you think?

what nasa needs to do now is first colonize the moon cos Helium 3 is an energy source that wont pollute our planet and kill the evil oil industry. Helium 3 is plenty in the moon. By far it seemed like space travel is not yet useful. its going to be useful once they colonized the moon and colonized mars. building pressurized domes in mars will solve the over population problems but sadly it will cost a lot of money. by far nasa hasnt done any progress. I think it might be better to leave space exploration to Russia.

Oh i forgot that they get to invent a technology of growing plants inside the soace station, which is now being used in submarines and antarctic shelters. The "butterfly abs" that is sold at Tv shopping is a technology originally used for astronauts.

Don't forget solid state electronics which reduced weight for space travel and lead to PC's, satellite communication for phone, TV, and GPS, and don't forget Velcro!!!

Actually velcro predates space flight... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velcro but they really have refined solid state electronics - Of course, Arthur C. Clarke (of 2001 fame) was a major part of satellite communications...

Velcro didn't really take off until NASA used it. They need a way to keep things from flying around the capsules in zero gravity. I remember Echo I which I think was the first communication satellite. I was a basically a giant balloon that the bounced signals off. I remember seeing it go through the sky and I also remember that it was used to televise the ummer olympics from Europe. The TV signal was fuzzy but it was, I think, the first time you could watch live trans-Atlantic TV.

Oh, Canaveral is still launching unmanned ships, but I agree, we need to get on the ball with the next level of manned space flight!

I'm assuming the powers that be were fully aware of the benefits derived from the space program before they went ahead in pulling the plug (at least in the public eye ,in cancelling manned flight with the Space Shuttle)-but the R&D will be continuing..

I was getting the impression such projects had more political and business influence dictating their success rather than public opinion..

but it isn't the PTB that need to know, they will cut the funding if public opinion isn't for the projects...

Whether it is NASA or private companies, we need to continue with space exploration and eventually expansion into space. The reason for this is that very few countries, societies or religions are willing to control population. Too many people on Earth is the ultimate cause of pollution and the using up of natural resources. If obtaining resources from other planets, asteroids, etc. and establishing colonies on planets and in ships is not done, then we are doomed long before our sun destroys us. We are rapidly running out of the resources here on Earth that are needed to be able to accomplish what we need to do in space. It will be too late much sooner than most realize.

I agree, tho we have a great mostly untapped resource in the ocean, but there again, a very hostile environment that we need to take vast care in exploring...

I didn't realize that NASA had done so much! I think they should continue and spend money on it. They could cut one of the other programs. There are so many investigations on stupid stuff, and the money could be spent much better.

They have truly been an amazing organization that has give a ton to the world. I liked the embedded health and fitness monitor in a shirt mentioned in the article. I knew they had given us alot but that list is amazing.

I am not really into science. Reading that article shows that NASA is doing something good for once! I just wish they didn't stop the Space Shuttle fights! They could of continued them until something was developed! That is my opinion anyway!

I agree, but they were worried that the shuttles would fail and kill more and that's a big set back for any manned space missions...
