Starting ones own business where to start?

So we are thinking of starting a business for my husband. He has just finished school for a specialized electrical degree. Since out he has picked up several side jobs, mostly in trade for work just now but though many applications and resumes have gone out not many jobs are being offered. Those that are are not as good of pay as we where hoping for. SO we thought maybe we would turn the favors into jobs and if nothing else supplement when he gets a job. I know we need to get him a contractors license here and liability insurance. I would assume a tax number as well. Anything else? does anyone know of a good book or website for us to use to make sure we are not missing anything?

Hi OpinionatedLady! I would imagine the laws are different from state to state but the best place to start is with your county tax collector's office. The same place where you get business license. If they can't help, check with your local chamber of commerce. Between the two, you get all the info you need to setup legally. Cheers, Stan

Oooo! Sorry to hear about the run-around but you must be getting close. Your friend may be right. If you can hold out another month and a half it might be easier to deal with them. I had another thought. Why not get a business license for yourself. I checked out your website. You could a license like "Jane Doe DBA Etsy Enterprise" or something like that. Then you could write off any expenses incurred for operating your "online business". Your also get credit for home utilities used, gas expenses for running to Walmart to purchase computer paper, ink cartridges and other supplies used for your business. Something to ask about when do get through. Cheers, Stan

I have thought about it but as of right now I just do not have the time to make enough to do that. I make a few pieces a month. It has been in my mind though to look into more when the girls are bigger. I home school the three older ones right now and that takes up most of my time. We where thinking of seeing if we can put them together in some way. An LLC or something.

Thank you. I called them to find out about the taxes and was sent to another office which sent me to another office and then back to the first . I wrote an email to a regional office now that I hope can help me. A friend said We should try after tax season as they probably don't want to deal with people right now...

I thought about this when I was made redundant, I was going to open a gift shop and also sell hand, ade craft items, I had a shop picked out and was very keen but things went wrong and it didn't work out, but I am glad today that I didn'e as the type of shops that I was modelling mine on have all closed down, but I hope things work out for you if that is what you want... it is a very brave thing to do these days.

I'd start at the school I went to in the first place. Once they have been made aware of your husband's intentions go to the IRS and see what they have to say about what you'd need to do. Is your tax preparer doing business independently? They would have a lot of great information. Good luck!

No I do our own taxes. The school will not support any small business who is not hiring from them as to not promote one over another or anything like that, he did call them. I did find a page on the IRS' web page that seems to be simple, so there is probably something I missed

These ideas were only a place to start the hunt! It's great that you started the hunt and that you do your own taxes, however if you would be running a business you won't be doing your own taxes! I hope. Don't even attempt it. Find a tax preparer who can advise you on a business. Your husbands school is breaking the law through discrimination! A Federal law! What kind of school can see the future of a business that hasn't even started? They wouldn't be promoting anything! They would have knowledge to help their alumni to start their own business! They in turn would be developing a relationship with the owner of a future company who might be an asset to them as well in the future. So this one I'm not buying! There are publications supplied by the IRS dealing strictly with business taxes. They have a whole library of explanations about each and every thing you need for business taxes. My husband and I ran a business for two years when he was offered and international air conditioning area service manager position. That's why I want to ask, do you really want to start a business, or wait until he can work for someone else? Your ability to seek out answers and develop professional relationships is just as important as his! I'd be picking up the phone myself to find these answers as he should be out in the field building his business!

All you have to do is to keep positive and persistence. That was an important point to achieve your success. Maybe you need to look for an opportunity frequently.

I encourage you to buy and read the book "E Myth Revisited" written by Michael Gerber, founder of E Myth Worldwide, a global entrepreneurship coaching company that helps new entrepreneurs get started on the right track. You will learn from there the value of "systems" in business, which is crucial in making your business successful in the long run.
