What kind of world will our children live in when they are old?

My parents grew up without computers. I grew up without internet. My children now cannot imagine live without internet. They're wondering how did I do research for my term papers back then, for example. What will be in store for their children in the future? The world will continue to change for sure; but will it continue to better accommodate would depend heavily on those who live in it.

I think of that often too. Makes me think of that song, IN THE YEAR 2525. I grew up without computers and in a time when calculators in schools were considered cheating. As much as I love all this technology, I have to think it has it's downside also. People rely so very much on it and if it fails for whatever reason then they are crippled literally. Recently, the store that I work in, the credit card machine went down. That just devastated so many people. Luckily for them, it was isolated to our store and they could go to an ATM and withdraw some cash. Can you imagine if they all shut down? If all the cell phones crashed? Computers? ATMS? OMG...it would be disaster for so many.

I think they could survive but it would be tough on them. They aren't being taught the same as we were growing up in a time when we could not rely on a lot of these things. I remember when I was in highschool and we talked about this and what it would be like when everything was computerized. One thing that was stressed to us is to always have a paper trail and a back-up plan in case the computer crashed. I've seen kids come in the store that I work. They bump into an old friend and they want to exchange phone #'s. They can't because one or both of them forgot their cell phone at home. I've actually seen that one a lot. If they lose their phone, they've lost all of their phone #s.

Yeah, kids don't bother to memorize even their own number these days. They just rely on saved phone #s on their mobile. They don't carry pen/paper either, just save notes on their mobile too. So you're right, when they don't have the mobile, it's like they are completely lost.

Yes, and this dependency to modern technology will only get worse in the future. Will future generations survive?

It's difficult to say, really. We can't always tell what sort of things we'll have access to in the future. We'll just have to wait and see.

Uncertainties can be scary; we could only try to be prepared the best we can.

I dont believe the world could ever get better as days go by, it is only going to get worse, apart from the internet stuff which my daughter is not yet quite introduced to other than some simple games sites, there are lot many things affecting human life, pollution, natural calamities which are only increasing recently, global warming of course, violence, terrorism, corruption, oh God, there are many things to say...my daughter is 6 now, i wonder how her future is going to be....speaking of her children, i hope the world would have come to an end by then, unless the Creator himself takes some steps to prevent them

Let's just be optimistic; and while we have to work hard for it, I trust God will guide us to what would be best.

I also ask myself the same thing. I wonder how the world will be in 10 or 20 years to come especially on the side of technology or even other things. I hope they can still be able to live peacefully.

I really worry about this! My kids are young, and while they aren't going online yet, its only a matter of time. The cultures now are becoming so dependent upon technology, but is it really necessary?! Then I look at the concept of money and we use debit cards. People rarely exchange cash money anymore. My daughters talk about getting a debit card one day. They will never learn the concept of money if they don't use it, or see it as a tangible item that once its gone its gone. I worry a lot about the resources the will and will not have. I just hope as a parent I can teach them enough so they are not overly dependent on the changes, and still know how to function they way we all did before all this technology.

@sishy7 I will be honest, I'm not looking forward to even thinking about that far ahead let alone live in it. The world seems really crappy now and only seems to be getting worse. I agree it will change, but a gut feeling tells me it won't all be for the better.

Yes, it's really discouraging sometimes to think about the future... We just have to be as positive as we possibly can...

Advancing to the unknown can be scary, or at least, a cause for concern.

I just finished reading a book that talked about life in the early 1900's a time before computers and a lot of modern conveineces of today. Life was simple then but the people in the story lived on a farm and life was often difficult especially in the harsh Alberta winters. Regardless of hardships, I sometimes wish I could have lived in that time it would have been nice to be around nature and enjoy simple pleasures like campfires and community dances and so on. I think we are a little spoiled today with remotes for everything and computers controlling a lot of things in our life but if modern technology advances for the good of man, then I think our kids will benefit in the future. It all depends on how they use, I suppose.

I just hope if, for some reasons, technology fails in the future and everything goes back to basics, our children will still have the capabilities to survive by not too dependent to modern conveniences.

It would be some a very dangerous world when our children grow old. They will live in total ease yet there privacy will be taken from them. Imagine a camera in every places you never thought would be there. I know that the day will come that humans will be monitored one-by-one and there's no escape for that. I will choose to live in the 60's to 80's rather than living in the world dominated by technologies.

That sounds like a very discouraging future; will our children and their subsequent generations survive?
