As others have said, money is worth less here in the USA. A 1 bedroom apartment in a low-crime area, for instance, can run about $500 where I live or over $1000 in one of the big cities. In order to live on $1000 a month here you have to live in a one room apartment, have no debt and be very careful how much food you buy. We have to pay for electricity, water (in most places), gas to heat our dwellings. Cars are almost essential because very few places have decent public transportation and that means buying gasoline and insurance plus maintenance on the car. If you do live in a place with public transportation you might have to leave 2 hours or more before you have to be at work and you'll get home 1-3 hours after you leave work. This is because the USA was configured, in the 40s and 50s, for the use of cars and trucks as everyone thought that nothing would ever change and everyone would always be prosperous. Most people here who live on $1000 a month are considered near the poverty level if they are single and below it if they have a family. We have to pay more than $3 for a gallon of milk. A nice beef roast for a family meal, about 2 pounds, can run as much as $8-12 and a can of soup averages about $1. So families buy the cheapest foods possible like macaroni, cheap frozen dinners full of salt and fat, anything to fill them up and save money. That's one reason Americans are so overweight. Fruit and vegetables are expensive--yesterday oranges were going for $1 each and a head of lettuce was $1.29, for instance. If you were to cook up a healthy stir fry with lots of vegetables, a very little meat and some sauce and spices it would probably cost about $1-2 per person. At $3 per person per day for the simplest, healthy meal it figures out to a grocery bill of $336 per month for a family of 4 and that doesn't include dairy products or fruits. So you can see that $1000 per month does not go very far here. And if you want to save money for retirement you have even less to live on.

Minimum wage in this province is $10.25/hr. The average Ontarian will work a 37.5 hour week. Take home pay is about $350/week. Works out to be about $1400/month. My husband makes $13.50/hr. He works a full 40 hour week. His take home pay is $442/week. He brings home over $1700/month. That's a better wage. I earn about $16/hr with no deductions. I can bring home $600 on a good week, that's $2400/month. It really depends on the type of work you do around here.

I know it may be hard to believe, but USD1000 in month is really not that much in my opinion. Since this salary is normal in Guangzhou because it is about RMB6200. Lately I found that some products' price are even less expensive than China. No wonder my friend often went online to buy products from USA and then shipped to China. Even though, the cost is still cheaper than buying it here. Today I found that a branded jeans just cost around USA25 in the webstore 6PM. Whereas we have to spend at least USD160 to buy it here. I don't know what to say. I love China

It may sound like a lot from where you are but the cost of living is typically higher than the average income in the USA. Our monthly mortgage payment is over $1,600! Our monthly electric bill is at least $200. It's all relative. My husband actually earns about 10 times what you mentioned in a year but it gets eaten up by the extremely high cost of living plus our lovely government keeps finding new ways to raise our taxes so a large chunk of our income goes to the government.

It may sound like a lot of money, but it really isn't, at least in our economy. Out of that taxes are taken and what we are left with isn't much. Our cost of living is much higher than yours also.

It could be true that they are earning that much or maybe more but that doesn't mean that it would be enough for them to have or buy their necessities in life. Way of living in industrialized countries is much more different in third world like ours. Prices of basic commodities are much higher compared to ours. What more if they want to buy their own homes. If that money will be used in our country, that would be more than enough.

I hope that that isn't true. Because $1,000 a month isn't all that much in USD. Most people who pay for rent have to pay an average of about $800, plus the other bills they have like utilities..gas..clothes...etc and so on. But I doubt anyone earns $1,000 a month online. I can't imagine doing that.
