It is not because of the internet but it depends on how the person handles it. The internet is just an advantages to us for an easy access to everything like if we want to get our assignments, contact other people from another country.

The internet itself won't give us any physical illnesses. The excessive time we spend in front of the computer, however, will. I don't know about mental illnesses that you may get from the internet but I guess it's just the same as meeting other people physically.

I don't think the internet makes anyone more prone to mental diseases, but it may make one more prone to physical diseases because of physical inactivity. Being inactive for any reason is bad for us. If anything, though, I think the internet is good for our brains because it engages us. It's a lot better than TV, which has been shown to change our brain waves.

Side effects? Other than estranging yourself from important people in your life for being on the internet too much, I don't see any other negative effects. This of course is a choice. Everyone can choose to walk away from the computer and spend quality time with people instead of a virtual reality so to speak.
