Missing my puppy

A couple weeks ago we got a beautiful twelve week old beagle puppy. We named her Dixie. She was your typical puppy the first day we had her. She was getting in trouble and had a few potty accidents in the house. She ate food like it was going out of style. The second day we had her she quit eating and started vomiting small amounts of white foam. The vets told us not to worry too much because she was drinking and still active and had solid stools. The next day she started vomiting more and I was giving her clear Pedialyte. We got her in to the vet because she did not want to move around. Dixie was diagnosed as having the f- strain of parvovirus which dogs can get even if they had their shots. We were told she did have her shots, but her lungs started filling with fluid from the parvovirus and the animal hospital could not help her, so two days after we got her, we had to put our baby girl puppy to sleep because she was suffering terribly and it broke our hearts- mine, hubby's and our nine year old son because in that short time we fell in love with her. I miss that little pup. She was so full of life and became such a big part of our lives in just a couple days.

Oh it is so sad when you have to have an animal put to sleep, its so hard because you can't explain to it that what you are doing is better for him or her is for the best, I believe animals go to a better place just like we do and I am sure she knows you loved her.

Sometimes life isn't fair and I guess animals can be taken too soon just like people can. In the days right after the euthanasia, what hit us the hardest was that she was only three months old and did not really get a chance to live a full life.

Thank you. The animal hospital was very sensitive. They even sent us a sympathy card and two pretty poems and wrote "in memory of Dixie" on them. We certainly did not expect that.

I'm crying.I also miss my dog,Bruno. He was strong then one day,he refused to eat because he can't eat anymore & he was walking lopsidedly.I called my dad who was out of town & did first aid but he didn't make it.I was his girl & I miss such a loyal dog like him.As for Dixie, perhaps she loved you too.I can't say something anymore.I'm sorry about your loss. Yes it surely makes us appreciate our pets more when we hear a sad story. I know just having my pet cat has helped. It will be awhile before we can get another dog because parvovirus can live on surfaces outside and inside for at least a year. We are going to wait and make sure it is safe to bring another dog home first.

I'm so sorry to hear that your family lost your pup. I know that our pets are as much a part of our family as the people that are in the family. It really only takes an instant for them to become a very important part of your family and this is especially true when there are children in the family as well. One instinct is to get a new pet right away, but that isn't a good idea either because it doesn't give you time to properly grieve for the family member that you've lost. Also, where she did have parvo, you want to make sure that the virus has been erradicated on your property because it is something that is highly contagious.

That is so sad that your puppy suffered that much. So what kind of breed was that?

I am sorry to hear that you lost your little puppy. I know that even if she was with you for only a few days, you already fell in love with her. Unfortunately, parvovirus is usually deadly. At least I haven't heard of a puppy that got well after being infected with this terrible virus. Where did you take your puppy from? At twelve weeks she should have had her vaccines against parvovirus. Didn't her previous owner vaccinate her?

Back in 1981 we had a black lab that contracted parvo. It was really new to doctors then and there was no medicine to make our dog better. Her name was Babe. She was at the vet's for 3-4 days. We went to see her daily and tried to get her to eat the special food they had for her. We could tell that she was happy to see us because her tail wagged some, but she was very, very weak. When the vet said she would not get better, we decided to have her put down so she would be miserable and in pain. Sad, sad day for us. We didn't get another dog for 14 yrs.

... and I'm so sorry you lost your little one. They are so easy to love because they give us so much happiness! I know that she felt your love for her while she was sick. In your own time you will be able to get another dog, but it's probably difficult for you to think about that right now. It's normal to grieve for your pet. I wish you all the best.

I am so surprised the vets didn't test her when you brought her in right away for parvo. Friends of mine bought a puppy from a puppy mill unknown to them. However 2 days after getting her home she got really lathargic, runny stools, not eating, not drinking, just really opposite to what a puppy would be. They took her to the vets and that's exactly what she had Parvo although I don't know what strain. Anyway they gave her multiple IV's and antibiotics, the dog made it through and is quite a docile dog. She's a goldendoodle her name is Lyla. They were lucky the dog made it through but only after a very high vet bill to cure her.
