I have heard that buying a person's birthstone as an engagement ring is bad luck for the engagement. I don't know if it's true or not but I don't like taking chances. As everyone has said, diamonds are the accepted stone for engagement rings. Many people will give Sapphires or rubies with surrounding diamonds. Sapphires were made popular by Diana and Charles, that ring now resides on Kate's finger. So, now the selection is open for your own interpretation. Diamond solitaires are extremely expensive, so you may opt for a large sapphire or ruby surrounded by smaller diamonds.

Diamond has been already the traditional and most common (and of course, expensive) stone used for engagement rings. Better go to this stone too.

Diamonds certainly seem to be the most popular and have been for a very long time... but there is popularity in the use of sapphires now too - either alone or in combination with diamonds :) Would say that's likely a direct result of Princess Diana's ring... which is now on Kate's finger!

u should get a diamond, but you should also consider getting each other's birth stone, too. that would be a great reminder for b-days, too. lol. that way he will never forget.
