Where are our missing friends ?

I could not sleep last night, and I began to count my myLot friends. I know that some of you are counting lambs to sleep, but I have only one lamb among my friends, and he is unique at myLot, so I counted my friends of any kind : humans, animals, plants and undefined. My profile says that I have 333 friends... and I counted... 302 avatars. 31 of my friends are missing

I started to count friends of my friends and my friends have also missing friends 
!
Were they kidnapped ? killed by a myLot serial killer ? victims of an epidemic ? are they ghosts ? something else ?
Can you explain this hecatomb

I have woken two up this week and have attempted with two more. One is our dear missing HWG who appears tohave vanished from everywhere and the other is a dear friend froma ccouple of years ago who, I hope will reappear once he read his mails and IMs on Yahoo.
There are too many who just go and leave us hanging

She has not responded to my emails since before Christmas - over 4 months ago 
topffer those ghosts have either been banned or cancelled. The number does not decrease when their accounts are removed. If a user joins through the ref link of a banned/cancelled user, they will appear to have one friend but no-one in their list

I was not talking of old friends like HWG : at least, she is still in my list with her avatar. I feel guilty about her, as I had not the courage to reply to her last email, but I cannot speak about this in a discussion. I just hope she will come back...
No, I realized that the number of friends inscribed in my profile, was not the same that the number of avatars of my friends

i know exactly what you mean. obviously a lot of us have friends that have very busy lives and show up very seldom here. some of my friends have gotten unhappy with some here that seem to think they rule and run this place. so, they just either dropped out or only come occasionally .
but like i said most just are very busy with life in general

I started this discussion with a bit of humor, and it has turned serious quickly : I have exchanged more PMs about missing friends than this discussion got responders. Indeed, some friends are busy and will be back later, but some have really disappeared and we have no news about them.

I think that they were killed by a myLot serial killer and their avatars have yet to be discovered, so that is why they are still counted among your friends but their avatars do not appear on your list.

If they are ghosts, then we might just bump into them from time to time, although we might not know it is them. Actually, that does make a lot of sense now that I think about it ... I bet that these ghosts of avatars mutilated by the serial killer are the reason why we keep getting the seemingly never ending stream of glitches on myLot, because it is their attempt to try to contact us.

Quits Mylot, Busy as a bee to the point they were all in, found an alternative option,Got banned, runs out of braincells so decided to take a hiatus until they have ideas again, the possibility is endless.
I have a day that I called "Garbage day" Its easy to know if a person quits this site, if they have like 10 post and has no activity for 5 months, its time to send the corpses into the morgue.

hi topffer I have also been missing so many like HWG and where did
she go too and some other like Spark of Insanity. I miss them too and am wondering . Were they kidnapped by little green men
or yes maybe a mylot serial killer. help or the English lady with the cute little dog? all my friends gone missing. Nope I sure
cannot explain it but in all the huge number of friends I have
I also am missing so many too.I know two who were so traumatized by a jerk who was on here and was giving them a
bad time. the person was kicked off my lot bu t my friends sill did
not return and I felt badly.

Hi Ms Hatley,
We are many to be worried for HWG here. She wrote to me and other lotters that she was living all her online earning activities to work offline. I still hope that we will see her back, as she has not canceled her account. I have also no news of several others myLotters in my friends list, and they are really missing : I find myLot less interesting without them. myLot is one of the best online communities, but like all online communities it is not secure from trolls. GAA does a great job, and happily trolls have generally not the time to traumatize myLot members before being banned

hmmm i am a ghost. i would rather be counter as one of the ghost..rather then be killed by a mylot serial killer.... or be a victim of an epidemic horrible!

You are definitely not a ghost, jazel : you have still an avatar in my friends list, and ghosts never respond to a discussion. Maybe you need a bodyguard until the serial killer is identified ? By the way, congrats for your new earnings record at myLot. $0.87 tomorrow ?

Top, so recently Mylot have a serial killer being roaming around? It sounds scary. I am sad to discovered that i had loss quite a few of my Mylot friends as well. It is a pity to see my Mylot friends gone missing without a trace or news. Won't it be better if Mylot could send notification to us whenever any of our friend gone missing for more than a month? I am still wondering are they being kidnap by the aliens?

I started this discussion like a funny one, but it became quickly serious, and I agree that it would be a good feature to receive a notification when our friends are missing from myLot since more than a month. Such is the nature of the world of the Internet, where people that we interact with every day for months and months often times do drop off the grid without any explanation. Granted there could be explanations. They could be sick. They could be busy. They could have no Internet. There could be personal drama that would make a website like this second nature.
There are people who should be here, but are missing. Perhaps they will find their way back home. We'll live the light on for them, that much is for sure. You just never really know what is going on, why people seem to fade right into the night, fade right into the black hole, the abyss of the Internet, never to be seen again. Perhaps they will return. Perhaps not. We can only hope.

I don't even know how many friends I have now. I guess I can always go back to my own profile and see it. Nowadays, I just don't have the time like before. I can only write my comment over someone's responses or comments. If I have a spare time, I would go back to the old discussions of my friends and start to response on it one by one...

Winter is not bad to kill weeds. I had a country house invaded by dormice a few years ago, and I found them when they were sleeping
-- a dormouse sleeps half of the year --, so hibernation is not only a word from the past in my country. Yes, I wish that my friends will wake up.

I don't think the serial killer is on my friends list : the slaughter is worst in other friends lists than in mine.
You are the first to use the word "dormancy" in this discussion. I suppose it comes from the old French "dormance", a nice word rarely used today. The root means "to sleep" and when we sleep we wake up, so the happening of a wake up/come back is implied in "dormancy". I like the word and the idea : some of my friends are taking a long nap, but I hope that they will wake up soon after their hibernation

oh yes dormancy is a beautiful but rarely spoken word right now. I just often heard it from the older generation, when my parents would talk about some members in their civic or social club they attended ( sort of funny or made them laugh in a way). Now it's used more in science here and would more often than not refer to a volcano from the time of it's last eruption. Hibernation is now used often as a pc word, but before that it was animals sleeping on logs or caves for the winter ( we have no winter). Don't worry, you friends will wake up from their sleep like Rip Van Winkle
